I recevied the lecture from the owner of a very noisy old Corvette, that his older Corvette (which used a truck transmission as provided stock) had straight cut gears, and hence the noise.
All race gearboxes use straight cut gears, they are more efficient straight cut gears are not used in road applications as they produce a lot of noise. That's why road cars use helical gears
GREAT JOB!!!! Very nicely done, I love these type of animations. And way to put sidowse in his place. There can be some real jerks on here that think they know everything.
Quite good, but slightly dissapointing. You have the "Dog-Clutches" on normal spur-gears. Helical gears are used in gear-boxes and it is these types of gears that NEED dog-clutches.
Althought I think I can understand why you haven't used spur-gears as that requires surface-modelling and that can be tricky.
Thanks for the comment although I feel I must put forward a statement which disagrees with yours. The internals quite accurately represent those found inside a TWR Volvo gearbox which raced in the BTCC series in the late 90s.
The orientation however of my model is incorrect as the lay input and the output of the output shaft share a common end of the 'customised' housing.
@roach308 Why are spur-gears used instead of helical-gears? All modern-day cars have helical-gears for all forward-gears. Spur gears are used for reverse only due to being inefficient. I guess you don't really know about what it is that you are talking.
@Sidowse yes i know all that i am a mechanic. but motorbikes use straight cut gears. the reason cars use heli gears is because they run quieter thats why when you reverse its very whiny compared to forward gears as its straight cut. but motorbikes dont need quiter gears because theres so much noise from the engine and chain so theres no need. search motorcycle gearbox to see what i mean.
p.s i didnt mean to offend you i was just stating a fact.
wow, nice...good job man, looks awesome!

Excellent work!!! Does it have a reverse gear? Or is it just the 6 forward gears? Anyway very good!
