FACT: Stewart NEVER played the same song the same exact way. Aside from the basic structure, he performed every song a bit differently each night. He played by feel and feel alone. If he was tired he gave less,if he was pumped it would seem like his kit was going to simply collapse from all of the pressure he put on it. I myself play just like him,i'm just not even 1,000,000th the player he is!
@Chrisdrumz: What's really amazing is the sound he got out of those Tama drums. In some recent article I read he said that his drums weren't even top-of-the-line Tama drums for the first two albums but one step up from the budget line! Well, the octobans weren't cheap but the other drums weren't "all that". Stewart Copeland could play a set of cardboard boxes and some trash can lids and it would be pure genius!
I would like to thank all those that put these fun live videos up for mine and other's enjoyment...Wish I could contribute more than just opinions, but I really do not know how to..I feel selfish for not adding to how much I enjoy the live shows/songs of these great bands....Eltroim, you haven't said anything that I even disagree with, since the only thing you said was that I'm nuts...At 46, I feel like it bubba....Cheers to your passion. I love The Police also, and this is a kick butt song!!
Eltroim, yup. Maybe crazy, but not because I don't know what I'm talking about. I do not take offense. Would like to know who else you've seen. Genesis sounded amazing in '78, but shit until they started playing the art-rock stuff that they were known for pre '83 in abour '96. Rundgren sounded better 3 yrs previous shit arena. Roger Waters' Wall last December way better than '80s. Diff. equipment, but how do you expain Daniel Lanois giving U2 much more depth, chilly sound, 4 guys 3 yrs aft Sync?
This is much better than the "Geriatric Police Version". Although the newer live version is closer to the record's tempo, I prefer this adrenaline charged version...
Yikes! love the police, but......wow. must note: Even Tempo's were obviously NOT the order of the day here! Lol! yeah, yeah, this might bring jeers, and i GET the whole, early 80's Punk thing. hey, don't get me wrong. HUGE FAN! but, just noticed, this tempo from when Stuart counted it off, takes off like a rocket! oh well.
@drumdude46 I love The Police. Always have, but consider them one of the worst bands to hear live that I've ever seen. Just my opinion comparing those 3, to many other great bands. Them only having three noise makers, might be a very obvious reason why they are so much better in the studio than live. Once again, just my two cents worth of an opinion.
@Eltroim Hey my friend, since I guarantee that we both are serious fans of those 3 amazing guys in that awesome band, and it's been difficult over the years to replace them with a few others that affect me more as my fav, I just thought that in the two tours I saw, Ghost in the Machine and Sychronicity, that the sound sucked. Only with about half the songs did the acoustics do them justice. Yes, I saw them in 4 diff places.. Curious if you are referring to the reunion thing, not back in the day
Recorded on January 11, 1980...still sounding just as fresh and as vibrant as it did three decades ago... there can be only one Police :o)!!! Love that raw and punky spirit!
the 'idiot announcer' is Alan Bangs, who gained considerable honour in the 80ies for bringing bands such as The Police to the German audience, and for abandoning stupid 'Playlist radio' in his broadcasts:
"I want thear people who are interested in peculiar things, who take the effort to find things that I otherwise wouldn't listen to. Who play their songs, because the are convinced other people must hear them." (quote from German wikipedia).
I completely understand what you mean Roxslinger and I promise you I meant no offence by (stupidly) calling him an idiot. I have no doubt Alan Bangs is a very cool person and is very well loved in Germany and elsewhere. I hope you'll forgive me for sounding like yet another ignorant American cause I'm actually not. :-) I just did not think before I typed which was dumb. Sorry and cheers from California.

Summers and Copeland objected against the lovesong lyrics. They had "all I want is to take gun on you" being more new wave in the spirit of 78 which Sting in turn vetoed.

Amazing! I am going to see The Police tribute band, Invisible Sun on Friday, Dec. 5. They are playing at Frank Cariola's Sundance in Rocky Point,NY. Thats 60 mile drive from Manhattan (90 mns). The Pretenders/ Cars tribute band , Talk Of The Town are also playing that same night. Bring back all the great music. I love The Police.
Both Andy and Stewart thought that the lyrics did not have enough edge in them since it was time of new wawe and punk. I remembered it wrong - it was "I am going to take a gun on you"
They tell it in the booklet of "Message in a Box" :)
sting is better he wrote all the songs and u no it and if ur talkin bout guitarst hendricks is the best and my favorite is kurt cobain but andy summers is good u no he use 2 be in a band called the animals
Copeland and Summers hated the lyrics and suggested singing "all I want's to take a gun on you" instead Sting refused and the rest accepted if screamed :)
This is the TUNE that THEY Closed With Last Night at SPAC, SARATOGA SPRINGS NY 8-01-08! It was an interesting song to use, If ya didn't follow this Band From the Beginning, Ya wouldn't have known this Tune...But Us DINOSAURS KNOW IT WELL!
hi, now i am totally devoted to both U2 and The POlice, but i can't help noticing the middle riff of this song bears a striking similarity to that of Vertigo. Now it's not my place, to bring a plagerism order down on U2 nor would i want too, (i'm also Irish) but it's a talking point nontheless, i'd love feedback on this, in the hope i'm not tone deaf.
Hey. Are you talking about the riff during the verse at ca. 2:15? It does sound similar, but that's because a lot of songs today are written around the same chord-progressions... I noticed it when I started playing music. It's really amazing how two (or more) songs, built around the same rhythm/chords can become so different, when you add details like melody, guitar tone, singer's vocal tone, effects, style of performance, etc... It's not plagiarism, though, it's hard to make something new!
thnks for getting back to me! yeah i agree! i play semi-professionally in a dublin-based band! i guess music is just like every day language, we all speak the same common words but not in the same order or with the same accent, but we can all add our own originality and individualism to what we say!!! thanks again!!!
well, actually, i saw them two or three days ago, and while they didnt sound quite like this, they were pretty damn good. i mean, they really got into it.
Great thing about this performance is that there is nothing sloppy about it! Devoid of studio proofing and editing, the boys are jamming out hard and fast in a live setting. Go figure, they are a fucking rock band! Stew and sting are directly in sync and Andy's guitar is definitely in tune. The Police are one of the greatest live acts ever. Their energy, particularly in this performance is palpable.
Buckcherry fucking sucks, The Police sing this song better than anyone. One major reason why, It's their bloody song. I love how all these wannabe bands cover Police songs. Goes to show you just how influential they are and always have been.
Are you fucking kidding me? The Police are unreal on a live stage...What and where do you get your opinion? Clearly you have not seen them perform other than over your speakers. They are the most exciting, exciting and innovative live band in history.

hi, now i am totally devoted to both U2 and The POlice, but i can't help noticing the middle riff of this song bears a striking similarity to that of Vertigo.

It's not plagiarism, though, it's hard to make something new!

thnks for getting back to me! yeah i agree! i play semi-professionally in a dublin-based band! i guess music is just like every day language, we all speak the same common words but not in the same order or with the same accent, but we can all add our own originality and individualism to what we say!!! thanks again!!!

i cant wait...im gonna see them live in less than a month!!

Their energy, particularly in this performance is palpable.

listen to buckcherry's version of this song.

Buckcherry fucking sucks, The Police sing this song better than anyone. One major reason why, It's their bloody song. I love how all these wannabe bands cover Police songs. Goes to show you just how influential they are and always have been.

foo fighters covered this really really well...stewart was on drums and taylor hawkins was on vocals

Are you fucking kidding me? The Police are unreal on a live stage...What and where do you get your opinion? Clearly you have not seen them perform other than over your speakers. They are the most exciting, exciting and innovative live band in history.
