@EnglishProd I see Vietnam as Johnson's attempt to hold on to power and kill the flames of a new McCarthyism before starts.Johnson had no choice. All his political decisions were hard. Obama with 2/3 majority and the presidency couldn't get a water down healthcare bill. Imagine the political power, skill, intimidation, courage it took to get medicare and civil rights. FDR and Lincoln couldn't even do it. The real story is there was so much threatening/blackmail/person destruction. LBJ had power.

LBJ was a great man who rose from poverty, who worked as a janitor at the then Southwest Texas Teacher's College, from teaching in rural South Texas, in the small town of Cotulla, to become a great President and who guided our nation through very dificult times.

Great president...Johnson presided over the longest sustained economic growth in American history, passed remarkable domestice legislation...budget surpluses..he would have resolved the VN war, but for tricky dick..who sabatoged the VN peace talks in Paris! I wasn't alive during this time but it seems to me that civil rights is sort of like gay marriage and how it is looked at today. I know racisim isn't the same but it feels the same feeling...maybe history is repeating itself

Johnson had his ideas and did whatever was needed to get as much as he could.

He was more effective than Kennedy at getting controversial policies made into law.

JFK was well intentioned, and I would have voted for JFK, reality is, Johnson had the hutspah to make hard choices during a time a radical social change in the country.

Vietnam ended up being johnsons war, because he was the one who escalated it by sending 500,00 troops their, and it was a disaster. Having said that, i think that when one examins his record, he was a good president. He show continuity after the kennedy assasinations, passed the civil rights bill that banned discrimination, and launched huge initiatives to end poverty and unemployment, plus helped advance america in the space race. So beside his misjudgment in vietnam, he was a good president

That might be tru. But Johnson was not a big government president. althought he has promoted the so-called great society social engineering. Johnson was a conservative democrat. The democrats did not rule the southern states after 1968 and was only a small portions of the southern votes after then. Johnson was the first social democrat ever elected in the office.

LBJ would have passed this healthcare bill a lot faster than Obama. LBJ had strength and courage and I don't see that in Obama. If he had led and fought for healthcare like a LBJ or a FDR, the opposition wouldn't have settled in.

I cannot agree with "one of the best Presidents" part of thy statement, mainly because of the Vietnam conflict. However, LBJ did accomplish many great things for this country by setting a foundation to end racism and prejudice in the US, and by attempting to alleviate poverty by providing better education and job opportunities. I just feel that many people overlook these because of the profound effect of the escalation of US involvement in the Vietnam conflict.

While I completely agree that the Vietnam conflict was NOT "Johnson's War," President Johnson did escalate the war and increased troop levels. Eisenhower did not start the mess, that was Truman, but he did exacerbate the situation by helping to create a "South Vietnam."

Whatever LBJ felt about blacks in private I will say here that he had more courage than Barack Obama and said what Obama would never have the balls to say. LBJ called his wife and told her by signing the civil rights act, he doomed his chance of reelection. Obama is more worrried about is legacy than the conditions addressed by LBJ here.

What he did in Vietnam was to hold power so he can surpass Lincoln and FDR. A poor southern boy rose up.
