@1994PaulF Yeah, and now 1 second is the gap from pole to 2nd place.Where is this sport going?.All the credit to Adrian Newey who has designed a great car, simply perfect in every aspect but one team dominances is not what we need at the moment. There are surely wonderful drivers on the grid today but it is not very much on their hands as the stupid regulations are making this sport boring.
Look at the Cars, hear the noise of the engines, the gap between top 10. Jordan McLaren Williams Ferrari Benetton ... how beautiful every single Part of the real Formula 1 was...so sad
@samsemtex I'm not saying he was crap, but his 1997 performances were very erratic. Last in Brazil but challenging JV for the lead in Argentina the very next race. Etc.
Well 1.18 pole. That's 5 seconds slower that this year's pole taken by Vettel that was a 1.13.It just shows the evolution of this sport and how fast these cars have become now,and that is all thanks to great engineers who keep exploring something new every season but unfortunately FIA is destroying this sport with its stupid and absurd rules.
@blerand91 I wish they would let the engineers have some freedom, today we could easily get these cars under 1:10 seconds around Montreal but FIA ruin everything! They may as well wrap the drivers in cotton wool when they make their way to the podium so they dont slip and die! Vettel, Hamilton, Button, Alonso, ALL OF THEM want to race on the ragged edge like these guys used to, but instead they have to conserve fuel and tires :/ More dangerous yes, but the drivers and fans crave it!
Irvine demonstrates how crap the 1997 ferrari was, Schumacher demonstrates how he's the best driver in formula 1 to be able to take pole in that thing.
@tubadude07 Shittiest World Champion ever J. Villeneuve scoring with dominant Williams car? The 2nd shittiest D. Hill struggling with Arrows? Nowadays we have Alonso, Button, Hamilton, Vettel and overall much tougher field plus Schumacher. Next season we'll have Raikkonen back. 2010 was one of the closest and widest championship battles in ages. F1 is now better than it was in 1997.
What a lap from Rubens.

Irvine down in 12th. Says a lot about where that car was relative to the Williams!

@samsemtex Irvine couldnt take the title in 99 despite team orders and McLaren screwing up, so I wouldnt put too much stock in his performance.

Why do you think F1 was F1 back then?
Perhaps because championships were realized without crazy rule changes every year.
Were the drivers any different?
What did we gain with those new tracks as the ones in Bahrain.. China.. Turkey.. Malaysia..?

I gotta ask this. Now that a decade has passed.
Do you think the people that watched F1 in the 70s and 80s thought 90s F1 was crap?

Too bad Coulthard lost an almost sure win when the race was red flagged right after his (botched) pit stop. He really deserved the win here.
