This guy was fantastic! Making animation by painting it directly on the film. No paper. No cells. No computers or CGIs. Why can't we find any of his short films here in America on DVD? If they can put Stan Brakhage's stuff on the Criterion Collection, there's got to be a place for Norman McLaren.
As the narrator mention many of Norman Mc Laren's films directly drawn on film uaed this technique, you can check it out on many of his abstract movies on Youtube but check the semi-abstract movie Blinkity Blank and also his most famous mocie Neighbours.
Later on in his career he patented a kind of movie synthetioser that used different blocks to produce specific sounds and this is put to it's fullest in Sinchromy where what you see is what you get; i.e. the soundtrack is also printed on the image track colored and sometimes doubled our quadrupled just to make things less repetitive. Pretty awsome for something pre-synthetizer and pre video or computer generated movie!

@poughkeepsiejohn1 Actually there's a very good dvd with all (or most) of his work, bought it less than 15$ (equiv) in France.
Culture is unfortunatly driven by biggest ego, humble hard working genius tends to be forgotten... just dig ;)
