to all those who says she sucks....scatting is improv! nothing is written down, they make it up on the spot! i think anyone who can scat and not sound scared is wonderful adn then she tops that with having a nice unique voice. don't argue, if you can scat you are creative, whether some one before her time is better or some person who isn't even alive yet is a good scat singer i tip my hat you. scat singing is an art which you can't fully comprehend if you have to argue who is better.
If your a singer who's ever found it hard to really give your gift a chance to blossom. Listen to Azariah Nesta - Lost Sometimes, i think it might inspire you :) R.I.P Amy, an Angel who'll forever inspire. Never to be forgotten xx

whatever you guys arguing about amy,i don givva shit! i just love her the way she was and i love her music and she's so inspiring to me. r.i.p amy winehouse. i wont stop listening to ur songs till i can accept the fact that u're gone ; (
@jowkerinting Dont stop listening to her music, she was a great talent, you could learn a lot from her esp on singing side but hope you dont do drugs and alcohol like her, you can be as better as her with out those craps.
What's so wrong with Amy showing her influences on this album of her's called FRANK (as in Frank Sinatra). I don't think she was trying to copy anybody, au contraire she was merely showcasing who influenced her great talent as in: Erykah Badu (hear You Sent me Flying), Frank Sinatra (hear Take the Box and Halftime not on the album), Sarah Vaughan (hear October Song and When my eyes not on the album), Dinah Washington (When my eyes not on Frank album), and so on. HER MIX made her unique.
to blend a genre of her own which to this day they can not put their finger on. So before you disgrace with the pop title know your facts. She was a soul singer none the less and was able to appeal to todays public something that is hard to do and she had the voice from yesters generation. So shove it up your ass and look up something you enjoy.
Of course a record label is going to want to appeal to the public to generate income she said so even herself in an interview that her first record label who produced her first album tried to control her sound to a more pop type and that is why she left to another label. but she was a soul singer, who incorporated many different sounds more motown and others of such into her music. at no point did she mention she was a jazz singer specificly.she incorporated many of the sounds from the greats
@DynamicDookie3 To be fair, she did state repeatedly while promoting Frank that she was first and foremost a jazz singer (see the interview clip in the BBC tribute). She never solely sung jazz though and like you said incorporated soul, hip-hop, blues and was clearly influenced by motown and girl groups.
Are you all but ghastly imbecile's ?! He is clearly explaining how she took the examples from Ella and Sarah and combined the scatting tune to basically mimic the tone. The musical rythim was actually taken in part from sarah's lullaby bridland song and she did mimic the tune of the scatting yet made it her own. If you listen closley they sound quite the same but there is slight difference in the syllables. It is evident. And at no point did he say she invented a scat it was merely an intro!
FYI, Chris Ingham, who's talking about Amy here, is a wonderful jazz pianist and singer. He comped me on Easy Living and then did a fantastic duet with Anita Wardell, who led that workshop, on In A Mellow Tone.
@falloutmnky She was definitely a jazz singer - one of the best. Check out all her versions (not "covers") of standards here. I hope they all get released on CDs sometime.
It does seem that someone (her label??) was pushing her to be a more mainstream singer/songwriter, as lennartackemans says. But her Love Is A Losing Game should become a jazz standard and her recent Body And Soul duet with Tony Bennett is a pure jazz gem.
@ArthurKaletzky as i said she was Jazz Pop she started her own genre blending the two, most of her bigger songs weren't as Jazzy as she could be though, Amy is the reason i got into Jazz and love it to this day :) thanks for agreeing with me.
Amy had a nice set of pipes, good time, and evidently a great ear. Mostly she was an excellent mimic that evidently has fooled a lot of people into believing she was a jazz singer...which she was NOT. Anyway, what's wrong with being "merely" a pop singer? To sing in a jazzy style does not mean you are a jazz singer. You want to hear a jazz singer? Bag the inherited opinions & listen to Carmen McCrae or Anita O'Day. Has anybody heard Anita in Jazz on a Summers Day? Now THAT'S scat singing.
Great sound. But the phrase she sings is a straight quote from Sarah Vaughn singing Lullaby of Birdland (have a listen, you'll hear it). So strictly speaking, it's not a scat, it's a quote. But she's great all the same, don't get me wrong!
@fern2forest well found! Also striking that it's the most easy part of Sarahs scat solo; just a pentatonic scale, where in the rest of her solo she follows the chords. It's clear that Amy doesn't understand the (jazz) scat language at all. She should be seen as what she is, a pop singer.
@lennartackermans oh, I don't think she was *just* a pop singer - she should have become a great jazz singer. Have you heard her sing Teach me Tonight on Jools Holland? Fabulous. I wish someone would dig out all her jazz recordings and put them on one album...
@fern2forest just listened to some of her jazz performances. It's actually quite okay! But I still think her timing is not nearly as good as the singers the guy from this video compares her with. Also, I doubt she would have ever become a jazz singer. Usually it's the other way around; artists often become increasingly mainstream because that's where the money and fame is.
...what a damned shame...Amy was heading to the Musical Land of Billie Holliday...but she just wound up with Billie's Obituary...Amy was special...and this is a 76 year-old man talking !!!
this was a very good documentary. I liked the way that others didn't so much critique her but brought out some very interesting points on her style. Made me go, 'oh yeah, she does that great.' thanks for posting.
