absolutamente innecesario... absurdo desde todo punto de vista, pero bueno en el Met se puede esperar cualquier cosa hasta que los monos se tiren pedos de colores mientras sus estrellas asociadas tengan firmado eso sus contratos!
matila does the split, dessay shows her tits and pussy, male tenors are showing their asses and dicks...
A huge pile of Idiots... Next thing it will be Gruberova talking to her psychiatrist on stage asking him: why why why am I not as famous as Callas? why why why I was a better singer than that greek bitch and 100 times better Norma
Karita Mattila is a true embodiment of the word DIVA while remaining down to earth and approachable. So committed to all her roles whether it be Tosca, Manon, Salome, etc. Great acting, Spectacular soprano, what more could you want in an opera singer?
This is actually very typical of Karita; she has a great sense of humour and she's very down-to-earth despite being a world class diva. She probably wanted to do it just for the laughs. And yes, I know what I'm taking about! ;)
I don't understand why this issue of "hitting the high notes" comes up in every one of these interviews. It's a myth that the general public is interested in that, and mentioning it doesn't "bring people closer to opera" or "make them feel part of the 'action'." It's a myth that anyone, no matter how "musically uneducated" or "inexperienced", looks at opera like a baseball game.
"goto41", it's a myth indeed. In facts people weight much more precisely and sensibly; they know that a soprano *has to* make beautiful high notes, and that she *has to* do all the rest as well. Taking high notes as "everything" (which NONE does) would be silly; taking it for nothing (which just a few "fast posters" are doing themselves and/or attributing to others) would be even more.
I agree, high notes aren't the most important things in singing. But in verismo, and especially with Puccini, high notes became a dramatic statement, they emphasized the emotion of the character, when they were just a vocal exploit in baroque and bel canto. That's why people focus on them. If you screw them up, you screw up not only the singing, but also the drama.
Hahahahahaha your comment actually made me laugh out loud. I love how you call her "La Fleming". Silly Renee, what are you doing? You are not Barbara Walters.
La Flegming, how cute. Deborah Voigt did the same thing to Dessay during intermission. These gonzo-ambush interviews are so startling during the Met broadcast intermissions.
I know! They're always a little unpredictable. There was a moment during the 'La Sonnambula' broadcast where someone evidently forgot to hand Deborah Voigt her cuecard and she was left staring at the camera for a good ten seconds.
I am sure this split wouldn't be a directorial choice if Karita didn't suggest that she can do something like that, so it IS her choice after all...
I can't imagine Manon Lescaut castings where the diva has to do a split at the end.
That said, I find it hilarious and doesn't bother me at all. It gives a taste of the ridiculous world Manon Lescaut lives in and if the high-C is so good, the split is a welcome stage joke!
Maybe she didn´t suggest it, maybe it was the director who did and she simply agreed as she felt able to do it. In the very end, it is HER choice and is a good stage joke indeed.
That's totally what I heard (lol)!!! I thought it was the combination of her accent and my having a dirty mind that made me hear stuff that wasn't really being said.
i listened to those words a few times, and what i think she means is, after fleming says "i've never had to warm up splits in the dressing room", she reminds matilla that she should be warming up, and she says "they're about to come"- referring to the splits

FUCK you. you know nothing and should be slapped by every member of the metropolitan opera orchestra, with an extra bitch slap from james levine you mindless operatic knowledge base wannabe. go sulk in a corner with a disgusting sarah brightman cd and your fucked up operatic opinions, and have a grand old time because that's all you deserve,
JuillHope17, I don't know what your posting is in response to , but it's crass and has me doubled over in hysterics here! So hysterically funny! A Sarah Brightman CD!!!!!! You should be writing for Comedy Central: Respect!
Got you! The posting was hidden, but I've since read it. Your response still has me cracking up. Saw Dr. Atomic today at the Met, and your comment about being slapped by the orchestra came to mind.
Guys, it's not like hitting a high C is easy. Hers was just fine. Appreciate the fact that she tried and did quite well.

I have never known that much about Karita Mattila, but after viewing this, her "cool factor" has gone up about 1000%.

The split was better than the C.
For a singer, it is way better the other way around.

@AfroPoli Her C was fine. .___.

exactly which aria involves the high c and the splits? sorry, I am somewhat new to this opera and have not heard it too much.
operalover9001 3 years ago
It really doesn't require the splits, it's a directorial choice... The aria is "l'ora oh tirsi".
