Superb, who can sing like that today? The perfect diction, clean attack, breath control, piani and diminuendi. pacing, elegant phrasing, expression, all is there. He is just right for this wronged, romantic, tragic character. This is great art. Moved me to tears.
As to earlier Russian singers and their lyrical, unforced technique, do listen to Oda Slobodskaya's Tatiana. There is the same 'clarity with warmth', subtle inflection, poetic handling of the words and a youthful, impetuous characterisation of the young heroine unequalled these days.
What a wonderful recording! Thank you so much for sharing it. I'm used to Lemeshev's later recordings, when his voice turned brigter and lighter. It's so good to hear him in his younger years, and the voice is smoother and a bit darker, very caressing. Wonderful tenor.
Certainly more powerful than his later years, I thought that it would have been otherwise, that he was lighter and then thickened his voice a bit. So it's a surprise to hear his strong and detached vibrato. How great that he did not trodden the usual path of many tenors to go heavier, on purpose, and loosing that wonderful light touch.
Almost certainly the greatest lyric tenor Russia ever produced, in spite of what Kozlovsky admirers say. The truly amazing thing is that Lemeshev had a brilliant ringing top, all the way to the high C, and it did not abandon him, even in his fifties, after all he endured during the Great Patriotic War. He is, simply put, one of the great tenors of all time. The more the world hears of this wonderful singer, the brighter and brighter his reputation will become outside Russia.
Come on, a fight between the gods? Kozlovsky and Lemeshev represent a school of Russian singing that seems to have completely disappeared. I'd like to know what happened, did some great voice teachers get eliminated or did a heavier style come into fashion? Come to think of it, after Tito Schipa and Lauri-Volpi Italy didn't produce any more of these lighter flexible and sweet yet ringing voices.
I have a recorded from 50's years but he hadn't this voice because he contracted tuberculose in 42. Here, we have the same style, so musician and no exageration. Moereover, It's the best recorded of lensky'aria and again Lemeshev ecrased allsingers. Thanks a lot younglemeshevist, I'm a younglemeshevist too. ;)
tchaikovsky was sentimental only in the highest of order...that makes him equal to michaelanglo etal.

Unluckily, that is so true. I miss those old singing schools!! And Lemeshev and Kozlovsky were simply the best of Russian singers and they still are.
