To tell you the truth I am 24 years old (I was still 1 years old when this movie was released) and I find Dalton as the perfect guy to take role as James Bond. Every time I watch the ending credits of this movie I feel really sad as this is Dalton's last movie as Bond. Wish Dalton played one more Bond movie in 1991.
Dalton is just great as Bond, and both of his films are some of the best in the series and actually just good movies in general. Dalton somehow projects intensity and grittiness at the same time as romanticism and vulnerability.
Timothy Dalton had class, sex appeal, strength and intelligence as Bond. Not to mention those beautiful green eyes. Unequivocally, the best Bond ever !!! Sean Connery seemed one dimensional and boring to me. And not at all sexy or romantic . . . .
This ending along with the Spanish guitar shows how far Bond has come. In some ways, I feel like this was the end of an era for Bond and although GoldenEye was a continuation, it was a revamp. You could consider classic James Bond 1962-1989 like classic Doctor Who 1963-1989.
I love the living daylights and licence to kill because they had a great beginning,a great ending and a great story. Timothy Dalton was the only true bond and the only gritty one as well Craig is just a fake Dalton.
There have been a few moments in Bond pictures that could leave a person as breathless as Mission Impossible. The challenge to an actor is to make those seconds believable and I think Timothy Dalton did a fine job of that. He was less pretentious then the others, I thought, and that made him even more believable. Perhaps not as entertaining as Sean Connery, but Dalton certainly did not lack any flair for the romantic scenes either.
Patti LaBelle's song fit right in, better than all the others!
Dalton was always a good actor and that helped him get the part,as Bond but he had big shoes to fill, I still reckon Connery was the best Bond because he was the first and that tough Scots accent done him a lot of favours he also walked like a caged tiger and was a decent actor,
I don't care what anyone says, Dalton was a perfect Bond and his two films are some of the best in the series.
For me this was the original Bond's (Connery-Dalton) happy ending. Brosnan's era kinda felt like a reboot of the series, bringing it out of it's Cold War atmosphere and modernising a few things to keep Bond fresh(Much like Craig's era). At the end of 'Licence To Kill', Bond's finally found a girl who's perfect for him and can now leave his past life behind him and start a new one.
"An underappreciated Bond film that makes perfect use of Dalton's portrayal, with a taut and mostly plausible storyline." I said that a few years ago, I stand by it today.
if you compare the fleming`s bond with the film`s bond the actors more faithfuls with the fleming's vision were timothy dalton and daniel craig, both are bonds that altought were the best on their jobs in the bottom hate this jobs, neither connery nor moore nor lazenby did that
Kind of an odd closing song choice for such a dark movie but it is still an awesome song. It makes the audience feel better at the end after such a dark movie.
Wow! Thanks for posting this. Love Patti's oroginal version from the end titles. Why on earth they released that drivelly version with Celine Dion instead of this amazing song by the legendary songstress I will never know. Great ending & song to one of my favorite Bond films.
@arweiss100 Yeah, while the Celine Dion version isn't bad, the Patti version is best. I made my wife, a Celine Dion fan, listen to both--back 2 back--and she even agreed I was right.
Didn't Licence To Kill have a superb cast! Look at the names, Everett McGill, Frank McRae, Grand Bush, Benicio Del Toro, Robert Davi, Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa, Wayne Newton.
I ALWAYS cry at the end of this bond. Not cause of the song(it's a great song not knocking it) but because this was also the end of Dalton as Bond I mean Brosnan was great as bond not knocking him. but Dalton to me always seemed like he never got the chance to play HIS Bond. Like his two bond movies where two completely different styles. One bond was more of a classic style(LDL) while the other was almost a proto-type for Craigs Bond films(L2K)
Timothy Dalton - lets just say that he would likely set a record for the amount of time taken to consider a role - Broccoli originally had him in mind to play Bond in 1968...
The Best ending scene in a Bond film because never before was a landscape used to close a James Bond movie. Why this? Acapulco one of the most beautiful places in the world. PLEASE NARCOS LEAVE ACAPULCO IN PEACE, HAVE SOME INTELLIGENCE TO MAKE ACAPULCO THE PARADISE THAT ALWAYS HAS BEEN!
"Licence to Kill" is the most serious, hard-edged Bond film prior to "Casino Royale." You had Timothy Dalton, who absolutely was brilliant as an edgier Bond; you had an underrated Michael Kamen score, and Maurice Binder graced us with his title sequence for the final time. This was truly a good film to remember.
you do realize that in the 'extras' on the very disk you got this from has the ACTUAL music video for this song? also they talk of an evil force that was wreaking havoc on the set, and a devil face/hand in a fire ball. fascinating stuff. timeless song though.
I know everyone has "their" Bond, "their" interpretation of what Bond should be and "their" favorite film, but for me - this final scene encapsulates everything that is the Bond World. The exotic environment with the palm trees swaying in the breeze, the tuxedo and beautiful ball gown, the night sky, the beautiful Mediterranean music and the perfect romantic ending. It's wonderful.
Fabulous song from Patti. The Bond films of the eighties really were the best (in my view): "For Your Eyes Only", "Octopussy", "Never Say Never Again", "A View to a Kill", "The Living Daylights" and of course "License to Kill"... all superb!
It's a real shame Tim didn't get to do a few more Bond films. Well, he was Bond officially until 1994, so in fact he was Bond from 87-94 and not 89 like most say :))
aawww.... what a cute ending, I'm not a bond fan which probably explains why I've never seen this but man that was way cool, and I forgot all about this song, one of my favorites by patti.
Everyone has their own idea of what Bond "is" and what a Bond film "should be". But for me, everything was encapsulated in this scene. The exotic surroundings with the pool, the lights, the palm trees swaying. The beautiful evocative Spanish guitar, Pam's dress blowing the breeze as she wipes away the tears. And then Bond, always manly, always in control, leaping into the pool to be with her. And then finally, capped off with a "Grow up, 007" shake of the head from Q. Just perfect.
I dont know about anyone else but I did get this feeling that James Bond had finally found his true love, someone he can finally settle down with. I just felt that Bond had some connection with Pam Bouvier that I didnt see any of his past romances. The way he came flying down into the pool just for her was romantic of him. Other than that the story is great and I dont understand why most of the Bond fans find Timothy Dalton such a bad decision. Hell with that Timothy Dalton KICKS ASS!
@teamrazgriz I felt the same about Kara in TLD, you really sense a feeling of genuine caring, affection and love in the "You didn't think I'd miss this performance, did you?". At that moment, it all seems perfect. But whether Kara could've tolerated Bond's lifestyle over a long period of time is another matter.
@levanyzzuf I'd go for Carey Lowell too. In my opinion, she's more beautiful than Talisa Soto. Then again, that's not the reason why Bond (Dalton) chose her over Talisa's character in this movie. Don't get me wrong though, I think Talisa is a beautiful woman, it's just that I find Carey more attractive... and talk about those legs... DAMN !!! THEY ARE PERFECT !!! I've seen recent pictures of her, she still manages to keep a nice looking lean body, it's amazing considering her age.
This is one of favorite Bond films. Dalton is definitely underrated. The title track for this film is probably my favorite Bond song of all time next to Tom Jones Thunderball.
I will always think of Licence to Kill as the final chapter in the James Bond series. This will always be the greatest ending of any Bond film. It's not just a satisfying ending for this one movie; it's also a satisfying ending for the entire series as a whole.
@Dezergold Although the Bond series continued with Brosnan and Craig, I always think of Licence to Kill as being the final installment in the Bond series chronologically.
@TheUltimate213 I do understand what you mean. There is something "final" about this scene and the way in which the song is used. Maybe its because it was the last 1 Cubby Brocolli officially produced as well as the last 1 directed by John Glenn (he did 5 including this one).
Goldeneye represented a new "era" of Bond, quite different to that seen previously.
Dalton was supposed to do Goldeneye, but they waited too long and he felt too much time had passed. He didn't get fired, he resigned the role to pursue other things. Brosnan was good no doubt, but Dalton was the best. We could have used a couple more Dalton films.
I watched this for the first time in years and being a little older I now notice some of the imperfections of this film but still it's a good bond flick and Dalton still remains as one of my favorite Bonds.
they planed a third movie with dalton and the 17th official bond film for a 1991 release. But the production never started due to legal problems with MGM.It was moved again and again. In 1994 they eventually canceled the 17th bond movie, and Dalton his role. I can't imagine how awesome this 3rd dalton bond would have been.
in the late 80's and the 90's they started to write "James Bond Will Return", before, it was for example: "End of "Goldfinger", but James Bond will return in "Thunderball"".
@dafedux Thats possibly true. I do remember those interviews with Pierce and he probably could have pulled it off. Daniel Craig is obviously doing that now insted. Pierce I think maintained some of the best bits of Dalton's character (showed Bond as a more human character - the cemetary scene in Goldeneye sees Bond as generally stunned). I just think PB had a slightly higher level of charisma.
@dafedux Brosnan's Bond was actually quite like the Bond in the books. He was a professional assassin and a womaniser yet he had a flawed side but always held his loyalty to the British government. In my mind the Bond in the books had all that and Pierce fit the bill nicely. It was bits of his films though that weren't as faithful (invisible cars anyone??)
It really is funny how fickle ppl are when it comes to Bond. Suppose it depends on each generation. At the time LTK was out Dalton was criticised (ok, he isn't my favourite Bond but I respect him for turning the films back into "serious" thrillers). Now he is highly praised due to Daniel Craig's gritty approach.
My fav Bonds btw are Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery. All however have their own merits.
@mrbain123 i always liked dalton. roger moore was always too happy. dalton looked like how ian flemming described him in the novels. also, he made bond a bastard again. but like you said, it is all a matter of opinion.
@tranurse I completely agree that Roger's style (tongue in cheek) was certainly NOT the Ian Fleming Bond but he had that twinkle in his eye you couldn't help but like. To be fair RM and TD are completely different in terms of their style. I suppose I prefer Roger slightly because of that forementioned 'twinkle' but (for the most part) I admit he wasn't the Bond in the books.
Well, sadly Dalton is still underrated by the generel audience. Mostly when non-Bond fans asks me who's my favourite Bond and I answer Timothy Dalton they shake their head or reply 'Timothy who?'.
And although the Craig movies may be a dozen times more faithfull to the books then the Brosnan ones, I can't get into their new style. Imo LTK was the last classic Bond film. I like Goldeneye too, it has a sense of grittiness that would have fitted Dalton.
".... if I had the opportunity to RE-BORN, I would asked from God to make me exactly like Timothy Dalton.... or at least his best friend!!!!....." Gentleman, I'm not gay, but this is how should men LOOK and ACT......R E S P E C T.....
It's funny how each era of Bond had a totally different feel to it, whether you break it down by decade or just the actor who played 007. In my opinion, the Dalton era was the best, The Living Daylights/LTK had their own style different from the rest.....better action than the 60s/70s verisons, less corny than the Moore films, less special effects than the Brosnan era but still great action, maybe more similar to Craigs films than any of the others, but still, the late 80s is where Bond ruled.
Dalton will always be the best Bond. He did it better than ANY of the other guys. This is my favorite Bond film, and the best ending.....but "A View to a Kill" is the best opening.
I will agree with FromPrussiaWithLove filling that "TIMOTHY DALTON IS THE ONLY ACTOR IN THE WORLD WHO SHOULD HAVE THE "LICENCE TO PLAY" JAMES BOND 007 FOR EVER" .........TIM, MAKE A CLONE OF YOU!!!!!!!!! ;-)
It is so sad to hear that song because we have to wait six long years for the bond movie. Tim dalton could have starred in some bond films during that time.
Timothy Dalton was approached by "Cubby" Brocolli to do OHMSS but declined because he felt he was too young. Unfortunetly (sp) he was unavailible until the Living Daylights. Mr. Dalton, thank you for the memories...
Dalton was a great Bond and this ending was both touching and romantic and personified the other side of the Bond character that is quintessential to his popularity. This might just be the best ending of any Bond film...psst...anyone else cringe at those lame endings to the Brosnon films when the officer yells, "Marines" and the troops pop out from hidden places?
@xraycat30 it dont matter. in fact, i feel it gave a sense of ease at very end of goldeneye with eric serra's song out of the end. very nostalgic still! ;)
I thought DAD was the end of an era, but when people say LTK was, I thought about it, and it makes sence: 1989, the last year of the 80's, bond is out of MI6, a fitting way to end an era. It's hard to explain
Maybe they can redeem it... like make a new bond film where he finally finds his true bond girl, and when her life is at stake (one that moves him most) his license will be revoked to him realising a woman is all he needs, and not the world's dependence on him... But obvs he'll save the world because he'll need it if he's to settle down with her.
LTK will always be the best Bond film of all.

@TheUltimate213 I do understand what you mean. There is something "final" about this scene and the way in which the song is used. Maybe its because it was the last 1 Cubby Brocolli officially produced as well as the last 1 directed by John Glenn (he did 5 including this one).
Goldeneye represented a new "era" of Bond, quite different to that seen previously.

glad to see others here agree with me that dalton was a great bond. anythime i say that, im usually blown off. dalton rocked!
chjack 1 year ago
Dalton was supposed to do Goldeneye, but they waited too long and he felt too much time had passed. He didn't get fired, he resigned the role to pursue other things. Brosnan was good no doubt, but Dalton was the best. We could have used a couple more Dalton films.
ad287 1 year ago
@ad287 I was under the impression Dalton had agreed to do only two films as Bond.

@thelastgreenelf he was contracted for three but decided to pull out of the third one

I watched this for the first time in years and being a little older I now notice some of the imperfections of this film but still it's a good bond flick and Dalton still remains as one of my favorite Bonds.
EchoBoomer1987 1 year ago
they planed a third movie with dalton and the 17th official bond film for a 1991 release. But the production never started due to legal problems with MGM.It was moved again and again. In 1994 they eventually canceled the 17th bond movie, and Dalton his role. I can't imagine how awesome this 3rd dalton bond would have been.

My fave Bond movie. Good old 80's, before political correctness came in and fucked action movies.

Back at that day in 1989, we had to wait six years for bond to return in our screens!

in the late 80's and the 90's they started to write "James Bond Will Return", before, it was for example: "End of "Goldfinger", but James Bond will return in "Thunderball"".

Saying that there were SOME more Fleming-esque moments in the Moore era (kicking the car over the cliff in FYEO)but they were few and far between.
mrbain123 1 year ago
@dafedux Thats possibly true. I do remember those interviews with Pierce and he probably could have pulled it off. Daniel Craig is obviously doing that now insted. Pierce I think maintained some of the best bits of Dalton's character (showed Bond as a more human character - the cemetary scene in Goldeneye sees Bond as generally stunned). I just think PB had a slightly higher level of charisma.
mrbain123 1 year ago
@dafedux Brosnan's Bond was actually quite like the Bond in the books. He was a professional assassin and a womaniser yet he had a flawed side but always held his loyalty to the British government. In my mind the Bond in the books had all that and Pierce fit the bill nicely. It was bits of his films though that weren't as faithful (invisible cars anyone??)

we'll never again have a time like the late 80's, particular 89. look at the crap we are in now.

Nice send-off to the "classic" Bond era.
Also, Q's expression here always cracks me up XD. This was definitely Llewelyn's best appearance out of all 17 films he was in.

Has all the right elements - gadgets, car chases, Q, amazing bond, sweet ending, comedic parts and an amazing plot.
This cannot even compare to Craig

It really is funny how fickle ppl are when it comes to Bond. Suppose it depends on each generation. At the time LTK was out Dalton was criticised (ok, he isn't my favourite Bond but I respect him for turning the films back into "serious" thrillers). Now he is highly praised due to Daniel Craig's gritty approach.
My fav Bonds btw are Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery. All however have their own merits.
mrbain123 1 year ago 4
@mrbain123 i always liked dalton. roger moore was always too happy. dalton looked like how ian flemming described him in the novels. also, he made bond a bastard again. but like you said, it is all a matter of opinion.
tranurse 1 year ago
@tranurse I completely agree that Roger's style (tongue in cheek) was certainly NOT the Ian Fleming Bond but he had that twinkle in his eye you couldn't help but like. To be fair RM and TD are completely different in terms of their style. I suppose I prefer Roger slightly because of that forementioned 'twinkle' but (for the most part) I admit he wasn't the Bond in the books.

Timothy Dalton sucks ass
BondGoldenEye 1 year ago
@dafedux

It's funny how each era of Bond had a totally different feel to it, whether you break it down by decade or just the actor who played 007. In my opinion, the Dalton era was the best, The Living Daylights/LTK had their own style different from the rest.....better action than the 60s/70s verisons, less corny than the Moore films, less special effects than the Brosnan era but still great action, maybe more similar to Craigs films than any of the others, but still, the late 80s is where Bond ruled.
ad287 2 years ago 6
I totally agree. Anyway they should have made more bond movies with Dalton!

they're all great, dalton very underestimated, though personally i'll always be a moore man...great song tho!

No reason to give deadmantalking007 thumbsdown only because he likes Moore. I think all 6 Bonds did a good job, all in their own way.
FromPrussiaWithLove 1 year ago
Dalton will always be the best Bond. He did it better than ANY of the other guys. This is my favorite Bond film, and the best ending.....but "A View to a Kill" is the best opening.
ad287 2 years ago 4
I will agree with FromPrussiaWithLove filling that "TIMOTHY DALTON IS THE ONLY ACTOR IN THE WORLD WHO SHOULD HAVE THE "LICENCE TO PLAY" JAMES BOND 007 FOR EVER" .........TIM, MAKE A CLONE OF YOU!!!!!!!!! ;-)
XristosKotzias 2 years ago 5
It is so sad to hear that song because we have to wait six long years for the bond movie. Tim dalton could have starred in some bond films during that time.

daytripper231 2 years ago 5
Timothy Dalton was approached by "Cubby" Brocolli to do OHMSS but declined because he felt he was too young. Unfortunetly (sp) he was unavailible until the Living Daylights. Mr. Dalton, thank you for the memories...
daytripper231 2 years ago 3
Timothy dalton should have come already in 1983, when roger moore was 55 years old, and played Bond in his last films simply too soft.
brotkasten83 2 years ago 4
You are right, Tim Dalton could have starred in the four bond films so his portrayal would';t be short lived.
ruantengyi 2 years ago 3
Dalton was a great Bond and this ending was both touching and romantic and personified the other side of the Bond character that is quintessential to his popularity. This might just be the best ending of any Bond film...psst...anyone else cringe at those lame endings to the Brosnon films when the officer yells, "Marines" and the troops pop out from hidden places?
xraycat30 2 years ago 27
Yeah, that bit at the end of Goldeneye always seemed pointless to me.
starschwar 2 years ago 2
yeah, now he calls the marines, when everything was solved. I mean they could have used them when Bond and natalya were captured

@xraycat30 dalton's my favorite bond. he had the most dignity, wasn't a whore like the others, and he's even the best looking.

i would love to see the series end with connery as bond on a suicide mission saving the world :)
bigvandave 2 years ago
I thought DAD was the end of an era, but when people say LTK was, I thought about it, and it makes sence: 1989, the last year of the 80's, bond is out of MI6, a fitting way to end an era. It's hard to explain
sheemobile 2 years ago 5
Maybe they can redeem it... like make a new bond film where he finally finds his true bond girl, and when her life is at stake (one that moves him most) his license will be revoked to him realising a woman is all he needs, and not the world's dependence on him... But obvs he'll save the world because he'll need it if he's to settle down with her.
FM46 2 years ago 2
As much as I love Dalton I also think Brosnan is an awesome Bond so I don't know who I'd prefer in Goldeneye.
I think it would've been awesome if Dalton did a third film in between LTK and GE, though. 'The Property Of A Lady', maybe?
