Minecraft Classic was a "neat" idea Notch had which was released on a public platform "just for fun" in accord with Notch's widely known support of the Indie game scene. Then he had the idea to make it into a real game. So he did. You do realize that he is planning on eventually abandoning Minecraft Classic and moving entirely to Survival Minecraft, don't you? The creator himself recognizes it's superiority.

Anyway, I really couldn't care less about Classic. They call it the "creative" version of Minecraft, but in reality, Survival mode is best for creativity and... well, survival.
