Ahhh super super cool lesson! I have picked up the guitar just once before (to play beethoven's Ode to Joy ashamedly) and am already jamming away to Jack Johnson! well, awefully slowly so it is difficult to hear what song it really is...and it is hard for me to figure out where my fingers go for the chugs and stuff =S still getting used to the terminology... I will keep practicing this song and maybe will get some rhythm into it soon!

any tips on songs for beginners would be much appreciated!

Here's a tip to make Riff 1 easier.

Rather than playing the 5th string with the second finger on the fifth fret, simply strum the fourth string.

Nearly makes the same sound.

Learn, they are a vital importance if you want to learn songs, or even write your own.

Start out with something like Good Riddance by Green Day. only 4 chords G, D, C, Em . But they use a different variation of the chords. So plan accordingly. There's a slick vid on this by chinarocksguitar or something.

He said "chug" and the vertical thing with all the x's are called dead notes.

chuck is an industry term for a fret hand muted strum,

a muted strum with your picking hand is called a palm mute.

in sheet music or tabulature, the chuck is denoted by the X's and palm mutes are notes or chords but are denoted with a PM above the staff lines or tab

Riff 3 is a little off. You can hear it in the intro of this that when Jack says "cant you see that its..." When he says "See" the note is on the A string 7th fret. Other than the few notes around there is a great video and really breaks down the parts well. I still give it 5 stars. Keep up the good work~

its where you lightly cover all the strings (dont push down on them, just make sure you're touching them) this will mute them so when you strum down on them, it makes that muted noise or a chug.

Like a short strum, where your hand doesn't go past your pick guard (if you have one) and keep your palm flat to the strings like a high 5. That is the way I learned but he does it different in the video. Hope that helps =)

the "chugg" is the "chuck" that jack does a lot. it is a muted strum. Almost like what John Mayer does when he taps with his thumb but you are doing it with a pick

hey good 3 part lesson. for every song lesson you should play the whole song and (maybe) sing. or just look for a backing track that might have the singing included or just play along with the actual song. dont have to but it be pretty cool
