well it may be the guys from Punch Bros, but they were not referring to themselves as such at the time. i was just noting that, at the time of this recording, Chris Thile was more "from Nickel Creek" than "from Punch Bros."
@joshman800000000 This group was called the "How to Grow a Band," with Bryan Sutton on guitar instead of Chris Eldridge; that's the only thing that makes this not the Punch Brothers. Nickel Creek had siblings Sara and Sean Watkins on fiddle and guitar, respectively. Both of them are absent here; so while this is not the Punch Brothers, it's definitely not Nickel Creek, either. (source: wikipedia)
@habertree Absolutely. You are 100% correct. I was simply referencing Chris Thile with Nickel Creek when I posted this because at that time (2006), he was best known for his role in Nickel Creek. So... for the record, I am completely aware that this is not Nickel Creek :)
In a situation like this, players rip out licks and play in a way a studio doesn't always capture........you have to love the vibe on stage here - respect for each other with a competetive undercurrent. Gabe Witcher - what a fiddle player! Thanks for posting this, joshman.....it's a bloody ripper!

All four are virtuosos at their respective instruments. The main difference between Chris Thile and the rest of them is that Thile looks like he's going to puke when he plays.
wot the hell with talk about capo? i play guitar and dont really know much about banjos however love the way they sound. But i dont even see a capo? Unless ya refering to a mic stand infront of the player lol
Oh love it! I love it that ppl love good music! But, over the capo? hahahahahahahahaha That's good stuff lmao! Oh man! hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
YEAH YOU WERE RIGHT DUDE! i AM A TARD!LOL WASN'T EVEN THINKIN ABOUT THAT-SORRY MAN-TOO BAD WE ALL CAN'T BE AS SMART AS YOU-i DON'T PLAY(STRING'S) i JUST KNOW WHAT THE STUFF IS KINDA" SORRY BRO.
This is a great tune. It' sDecision at Glady Fork from Bryon Sutton (the guitarist's) album. It's supposed to be fast and sounds great that way. Ithink the sound quality of the video is bad so that probably makes the banjo sound "undriven". I wish there was more from this concert somewhere
Nah, that's just how the Punch Brothers bring it in concert. Way too much frenetic energy to jam slowly. They've got their ballads too, but a large part of the appeal, Chris's especially, is that they shred so hard.
I'll never forget the first time I heard "Ode to a Butterfly" on Nickel Creek's first LP. There's a passage that's picked too quickly to decipher, like something out of Van Halen's Eruption. I was at that moment and am forever a devoted fan of the Creek and their various projects.
I love Chris Thile and his band is amazing. Seems like music is the only place he can escape though. He doesn't look that good recently but he won't let that affect his skil or love for music! Bravo Chris!
Funnily enough that same guy said the exact same thing on a Tim O'Brien video (who is great, by the way) banging on about how thile sucked. Funny how Thile is revered amongst all other bluegrass pros and musicians as an absolute legend! Seems that angry chap doesn't know it all after all. I'm with you: If you don't like Chris Thile, you don't like music. happy pickin'
It can be. Dexterity (or at least speed) isn't necessarily an important facet of a guitarist's technique. I've heard people play faster than this guy (i know, it sounds ridiculous) but there was no emotion and i just sounded like mosquitos fucking. Chris Thile is incredibly good at what he does, i'm not reffering to him i'm just saying for argument's sake slow can be proof of one's skill. plus, kyredneck just wants you to give him attention.
@doomedpiglet13 it's called the search bar. it's located at the top of the screen and there you will find all sorts of things that aren't even on this page right now!!!!!
Actually, I don't agree. People rave about him but I've seen him live playing with David Grier and was underwhelmed by Pikelny. He's never done anything that has impressed me or made me say "Wow! That was really unique." I think he tries to infuse too much jazz into his style instead of sticking with just rock solid tempo, tone, and speed (when necessary).
the banjer picker is Burl Luggs..i don't know giggleblade, gee whiz, you sure ask enough questions. some old drunk called earl scruggs, burl luggs at merlefest a few years ago..i have been trying to find burl..yeppp..
Insane! Bryan Sutton is simply amazing, as are all these guys. The song is called "Decision at Glady Fork"... just in case you didn't know. Thanks for sharing this!! I would have LOVED to be at that show!
oh it was incredible. (i felt a little bad about videoing some, but i would've felt worse not sharing it with everyone.) i couldn't remember if he refered to the song as "Bluegrass Guitar" or if he said it was time for some "bluegrass guitar." either way...
My brother is playing string bass in your videos. I know how he is about that... I think he'd be cool with the videos considering I think he sent them to my mom and that's how I came across them. Don't know about the others though. :)

It is physically impossible to produce any sound beyond the capo unless all you want is a strum so no. that cannot be happening.
