  • Rock!!!!!!!!! Good or change Rock Electric Sound I like

  • @3:54 blood rushing everywhere

  • so fucking grovy..

  • Comment removed

  • Stanier is one of my favorite drummers. Every single video I see of him looks like he's giving it everything he's got. If you see them live, watch Stanier's shirt change colors throughout the show.

  • @SlimBoyArcadeFire no he hits it, you can see him hitting it. hes not chuck norris

  • the top two comments both got his name wrong

    why.jpg

  • Drops a stick and still doesn't miss a beat1

  • You can see it right when Stanier starts headbanging. That is the look of a man who has blacked out every sound, and is just in the zone. Dude kills those drums like it's nothing.

  • Prog rock/music

  • Isn't Tyonda out of the band now?

  • @MajoraMasks66 Yes, but I'm guessing you know that by now

  • DRUMMER IS A MADMAN!!!

  • Stanier is perfect.

  • ...also, what about the big arguement about what constitutes music as being psychedelic? Repetition, variation, etc...Just food for thought...and music, being ethereal, is already phychedelic...some more intentionally so, I guess. With that said, I would be surprised if this isn't one of those efforts. It is however a given that it's informed by so-called "interior music," as all music (among other things) roots in...

  • I'm 28 and have spent a considerable amount of time surfing the waves all across the music spectrum, and Mirrored caught me SO off-guard, it's not even funny. I was like, "WTF?! How could this be?...how can each song rise to this level of creativity, taste, technicality, innovation, and uniqueness and originality in general and within the album while still maintaning the Battles sound? Is it possible that they knew it would be like this?...that this balance was somehow intended?"

  • @SuperDefaultname i agree

  • Is it just me or are they really playing it faster than the one on the record?

  • Just bought tickets to see them in Austin! I just discovered this band about a month ago. WOW! Amazing stuff.

  • Tune

  • beat the shit out of that fuckin charleston

  • Man it's so overwhelming, I don't need to smoke weed to feel high on this but weed just makes it that much better

  • It's awesome how everyone in the band uses tons of effects and a few instruments, except for John in the drums, and he is the one that stands out from the rest.

  • that drummer is a beast! hope they come to the UK!

  • John Stanier = dead nuts PERFECT time.

  • Look closely to 5:11 FUCKING DRUMSTICK CHANGE!

  • GLOSS DROP GLOSS DROP!!!!

  • Stanier has some wild stamina!

  • As great as John Stanier is, the best things he does are always subtle, yet genius. Like from 3:27 - 3:33, that is a little fill that no other drummer would do. It's basically a little rhythm 16th note fill that someone would hit on a guitar with a wah-wah pedal, but he does it effortlessly in the midst of a booming, extended crescendo. That is why he's a genius. Right there.

  • This band rules, but the singer has gone or something...wtf!!

  • @Pravindaswani74 He's focusing on his selftitled solo career Tyondai Braxton

  • My life will not be complete until I see them live at least once....

  • of all the fucking songs that exist, how often do you hear such a decrescendo to the end of the song? 1 in a million. Pure classy avant-garde

  • This is such awesome music, the guitar really reminds me of Cedric's from the Mars Volta...

  • @ArcticYoshi ahahahah more omar than cedric, i think..

  • @mariorossipuzza yes, definitely more omar hahaha they also kind of look similar...

  • @ArcticYoshi cedric is the singer in mars volta. omar is the guitarist

  • Stanier rules!

  • Experimental. Reminds me of The Can. Good to see that spirit present in this band.

  • I wish my cymbal went as high as Stainer's.

    I definitely have cymbal envy.

  • Stainer needs to breed so there can be more Stainers in the world.

  • John Stainer is the Chuck Norris of drumming

  • It's a toss-up between Battles and Radiohead for my title of "the new Pink Floyd".

    Great stuff.

  • His cymbal is so high because he's John Stainer and he can do the fuck he wants!

  • @adamphogwood

In an interview he said the stand got stuck. lmao

  • @adamphogwood God damn right.

  • why is his crash so high!

  • great!!

  • please listen Yo i Yo

  • soooo good

  • haha that *agusagus* guy would have all guns and roses videos on his channel...

people need to respect modern music. its fantastic how much music is able to change over the years.

respect to guns and roses though i think they used a delay pedal in welcome to the jungle. and their live and let die cover was a pretty fresh tune.

  • White people are crazy.

  • @chefforrest best believe that

  • @agusagus they're not new....

  • @agusagus "this is not even a song"... you suck

  • @agusagus I've never seen a band with their cymbal like that... It's a joke with the drummer of Don Caballero.

  • @agusagus

You have to listen past the 3 min mark. The bass is lost on this recording so it loses it's impact A LOT. Check the album version before saying anything rash.

  • commercial and unnessasary high cymbal just making life difficult in order to be ,as students say, 'random'

  • Did you just call his cymbal commercial? To be honest most people I know like Battles from the music, without knowing he had a high cymbal. It's such a minor detail, its not like people see the high cymbal and go "wow, thats "random", I choose to like this music now".

  • @rosshasashoe He has it up high so it forces him not to overuse it. He wants to put meaning back in the "crash".

  • @YogritMUN it's actually cause he did it once as a joke, and just stuck with it. he doesnt mind cause he doesnt use it much. thats what he said in an interview/

  • @Ichvyenichalster Haha, oh. Heard otherwise from a friend.

  • @YogritMUN he has it up that high so that when mic'd there is not a lot of residual feedback or vibrations. A lot of drummers do that

  • @johnisredhot Alright so that's three different reasons...

  • @johnisredhot John Stainer did that to fuck around.. Then he just left i like that!

  • @johnisredhot You're wrong sir.

  • @YogritMUN No, that's not the real reason for it being that high. But you're right about him wanting to put meaning back in the crash and to not overuse it.

  • commercial and unnessasary high cymbal just making life difficult in order to be ,as students say, 'random'

  • You're stepping all over her, dude.

  • vanguardia¡ya

  • @ChadTheCunt

It's avant-garde. It isn't necessarily supposed to make sense.

  • STOP EVERYONE. stop comparing to foals. just stop now.

  • @niloc141414 Sorry, but they are kinda reminiscent. their sounds (at least on this song by battles) are similar. so blehhhh :P

  • DRuMMER IS GOD !!

  • john stainer the drummer is like a machine. he is so good!

  • All People Seem To Need Data Processing

  • John. Stanier. I mean...Damn!

  • That ruled! Thanks!

  • there music is un balanced, weird, and a bit weird. but I luve it

  • these are real musicians!

  • soo sweet. I cant over how awesome the part where the main drum beat kicks in in the intro is!!!

  • Their drummer is a obviously a robot. This video confirms it.

  • HELL YEAH!

  • Does anyone know any other math rock bands like battles? I've been getting into it lately but finding this music is hard. =/

  • Don Caballero, which you've probably been introduced to already...I'm also a big fan of Sleeping People's 'Growing' album.

  • Pele, Toe, Don Cab, This town needs guns, meet me in st. louis, maps and atlases, Giraffes? Giraffes! to name but a few math rock bands. Although if you like math rock bands such as mogwai, explosions in the sky, or godspeed you! Black emperor, or noise-rock bands such as Shellac, Slint, Kong (youtube "blood of a dove"), or rapeman :) I got into those different types of bands at the same time and tome they have a similar level of awesome. That's why i'm throwing them in there =]

  • Mogwai, Explosions, and GS!BE aren't math rook. They're post rock.

  • lynx

  • do you know "foals"? they have much more pop appeal...but especially this song here reminds me of their stuff. if you haven't heard of em, you should check them out!

  • Battles is really unique. They've created a style of their own. Other good math rock stuff includes Auto! Automatic!, 65daysofstatic, and Lite. I'd also check out good post rock, like Mogwai, Tortise, Caspian, Sigur Ros, and Russian Circles. Mars Volta and Radiohead are worth checking out, too.

  • I know another math rock band thats not exactly like Battles.. much.. but people tend to like them if the love Battles! Check out Hella! They being soo good.

  • thanks man they are awesome!!

  • Oh no problem, pally!

  • try toe - velvet blac or lite - ghost dance, two amazing japanese bands. im sure they will blow your mind.

  • @NicktheGreat3 DON CAB.

  • Dude, the drummer from helmet, the amazing guitar guy from Don Caballero, and these other two awesome musicians...what the fuck more could you want!? This music is awesome!!!

  • that drummer is awesome

  • @BoldOriginalFlavor that band is awsome

  • 3:10 always gives me chills

  • that is pretty cool

  • Comment removed

  • robotic perfect battles its great, your sound is orgasmic and suffer... i remember good times of Mirrored album.

  • Seekly cool!

  • Can't wait for another Battles album

  • Saw 'm here in Bangkok last month. Blew my mind away.

  • fantastic

  • This video would've been so awesome if that idiot's head hadn't been in the way the whole time. I also think I'm in love with John Stainer.

  • So tight...amazing drummer, yes.

  • saw them live in singapore. eargasmic

  • yea hes such an amazing fuckin drummer.. god damn

  • cant get over the simple fill at 4.14.

    simple but amazing.

  • I know! hits all the notes, but doesn't overplay the bass rhythm of the turn....just perfect!!

  • "He sells ecstasy"

    lol

    ?

  • john stanier is an insane drummer! battles is such a great band that all members can really hold their own but stanier outshines all of them just by that little bit. they won't be that great without him.

  • John ruled in Helmet. Just a powerhouse drummer. Battles ftw.

  • thats a kool thing the drummer does with the cymbal at 1:21

  • I wouldnt say Many... Maybe some, And they would match it in other aspects..

  • John set the cymbal up that way joking around, but then decidid to keep it that way b/c of how ridiculous it looks and, "now" he said "I have to keep it or people will freak out."

  • john stanier's one solid drummer. his drumming is crazy even though it looks simple...he just makes it look so easy. asides from that this group PWNS

  • "You're steppin' all over me duude!"

  • I honestly Don't think this drummer is getting ENOUGH credit, I would love to see any drummer match his time and intensity, its not gunna happen, especialy considering the nonsense that he has to drum to in Battles. If you see them live you'll second every word ive said.

  • Mrsiggys....he's good, but don't over-praise him, there are many who match his ability in spades

  • dude i don't give a shit about hype. all i know is that when he comes in, in the beginning of the song he is clean as fuck. and about his crash symbol, who cares, you can set up your kit anyway you fucking want, its your kit.

  • dear justin2535, take it deep

    your friend, Jesus

  • evvaiiiiiiiiiiii.......

  • im sorry but that crash cymbal is just ridiculous lmao

  • there's a reason behind it though

  • id like to hear it

  • If you want to hear better examples of his drumming you should listen to Tomahawk. It's one of Mike Patton's side-projects and is more of a traditional rock band when compared to these guys.

  • Addendum to my previous commento-- If you want to hear technology-driven music with an incredible groove and feel, check out JoJo Mayer with Nerve.

  • I was perusing the other comments concerning John Stanier's drumming, and I have to say that the criticism is irrelevant. Battles plays technology-driven music, and as such, the feel is more mechanistic. This has always been Stanier's strength--listen to Helmet for a past reference. He tends to be very robotic as a drummer, but this style works with the material in both bands. There's only one Steve Gadd after all.....

  • lol did he just say the drums dont groove?

  • Seriously, I gotta comment again after reading all the posts saying how good the drummer is! Are you guys watching the same video as me? This guy is mediocre at best. I can think of 3 drummers I personally know right off the top of my head that blow this dude out of the water, and those are just ones that live around me! I don't think he's bad, just not up to par with the rest of the band. Especially on the creative side. He's drumming is very stiff and doesn't groove at all.

  • but it works with the music no matter what your opinion of his skill?eh?eh?cmonnnn!

  • Yeah, it works pretty good. They're still a good band. I like mirrored a lot. Its just frustrating as a drummer when you see a bunch of hype over a player who you know isn't that special. I admit that its partly jealousy, but I think it's justified considering there's allot of people working way harder than John Stainer who don't get any cred.

  • @justin2535 Working way harder than Stanier? mmmm No, he is constantly playing in new bands and making music. He was also called one of the best drummers by none other than Dom from Muse, if you are interested in music. He never fucks up live, and he plays the simplest, but still mathy, stuff. Stanier, that is. Also, working harder from a physical aspect: listen to Race:In and Race:Out, those songs are 5+ minutes non-stop faster than average beats.

  • He is "way on top of the beat" but "never in the pocket"? Those both mean the same thing. Playing in the pocket is playing on top of the beat, not in front or behind.

The drummer is playing something completely appropriate for the song. That's what's important. Not his chops, not who you know that can "blow him out of the water", but what he plays in relation to the song.

  • No, they are not the same thing. On top of the beat means that he is forcing it, without feeling the groove naturally. He's got a very robotic feel. Or lack of feel rather. Quite simply, he's too stiff. I think that if you just listened and watched him play, without being biased because your a fan, you would have to agree. I have all the battles EPs, and the mirrored, as well as most of the helmet stuff. His playing worked much better in helmet, since the nature of the music was stiff and riffy

  • "he's got a very robotic feel."

So does the cover of the band's album. There's a video on their myspace page where the band discusses their history and not wanting to be pigeon-holed as one of those bands with a tree on the cover. I think if he were playing more loose, the music would suffer, or at least stray from their industrial imagery that they are trying to create. The stiff, on top of the beat drumming suits the music more appropriately in my opinion. Agree to disagree.

  • for all of you that don't get it, they give you a little introductory lesson from 3:47 to 4:02...that ought to be enticing enough to get you to pay attention to the rest and learn something...

  • What a pretentious thing to say

  • I fully retract that statement i apologise. Saw these guys bout two months ago at the oxegen festival in ireland. They blew my tiny mind, i had never heard them before

  • if you love music, then this band will give you hope for music. if they don't give you hope for music, then you don't love music.

  • erm I love them but that's a really pretentious statement. I really hope your like 13/14 or there is no hope for you...

  • I'm only 5 actually, so I think my vocabulary is pretty impressive...

  • sick

  • Best Band From New York Fucking City. Screw Vampire Weekend!, this is the real thing...I saw them both for free at Summerstage (Central Park) on diferente dates, and Battles (last week) were way better..

  • anyone esle catch the lady saying some guy is selling e lol :30

  • wat a goofy drummer! i like this guys

  • within the first 30 seconds John stanier blows 90 some percent of drummers out the water. after a minute and a half, ain't too many of the rest of em around. seriously, a metronome with a heart

  • fucking amen.

  • he's Al Jackson Jr. for our generation. innovation + a metronome...unbelievable...

  • I'm so so upset that I'll miss them at Bumbershoot

  • For a split second I forgot why John Stanier is my favorite drummer ever, and then I saw this.

  • i love them :D

  • Holy crap.. watch the drummer break a stick at 5:20 and replace it without missing a beat.

  • John proves again why he's one of my favorites.

  • the drumming is impossibly good, Sounds IDENTICAL to the album version, jesus christ.

  • Holy shit! John Stanier!

  • the drummer is a precision machine.

  • lol yeah,..good way to put it haha
