  • other than the instructor - frankly the form is poor. bad footwork and weak stability. lots of rabbit punching. that's the problem when u focus on NOT hitting the face. you lose an entire dimension of training. the irony of people who practice ashihara and similar styles is that they have become more unrealistic than the traditional styles of karate.

  • @ratchadapalazzo I think some of us would agree with what you about individual weakness in sparring. I wouldn't say that any 'style' is realistic / unrealistic, good / bad, better / worse, rather the individual practices in a dojo (of any art and style) needs to be monitored and improved constantly. Not an easy process, but that's why we're all here in the dojo every week, to try. :)

Thks for the points mentioned, just gives us all another reason to train harder under our instructor. *grins*

  • @aylwintan1978 i think the there's too many of what you call individual practices going on in the video and it actually reflects the way the group practices karate collectively. it goes without being said that no style of practice is realistic 100% but there are certain kinds of practices going in this dojo (in the video) that reflect some poor standards. ashihara himself was a great fighter and karateka and had a good foundation but. ashihara as a style itself provides very poor basics.

  • @ratchadapalazzo Check out Ashihara USA videos under Nishiyama dojo, you can see some of the students there who seem to have good foundation. These days, not many ppl train at the level that Ashihara founder did back then. I think taking up Karate for many now comes down to how much they want to put into their individual training. In an ideal world, I sure would wish to train like it used to be.

Sorry, not intending to do this as a comparison, but have you trained in Ashihara style before?

  • @ratchadapalazzo Oooo btw, I like the point on 'rabbit punching' haha...
