  • I've always trained to failure, for years and years. I would notice though, id feel good, strong and looked pumped for a few weeks, then all of sudden, id look like shit. no pump in the gym or out. strength was pretty much the same. I would then take some days off, come back, and what do you know, my pump is back and im looking bigger again. Thats telling me, my body can only handle that intensity for slow long. I'm now stopping short on every set.

  • If you look at top powerlifters, very few ever train to failure. they work alot on speed and explosive type training. I've read, that the last thing you want to do, is grind out those last few reps. when you do that, its going to limit how much your going to be able to do on subsequent sets. by stopping short, you can recuperate faster, work each bodypart more often. its hard to stop short of failure, you have to consciously think about it, especially if your used to going to failure.

  • I think training to failure can be a good strat sometimes, its just not good when the whole point is to go to failure. Failing on a set is gonna happen but it shouldnt be the goal, I think its better to set a goal of lets say 3x8, and achieve it, with the last set being almost failed if lets say last time i got 8,8,7. you can get more total reps this way 8,8,8 is more than 10,6,4. going to failure burns you out but it can be good. its not the only way though

  • I never wen't to failure when I had my best gains in strength before, but in addition I had someone spotting me, telling me when to stop. I trained each muscle twice a week.

    Now when I train alone, I have tried training to failure, but not on purpose, and I notice I need the full week of recovery.

    Main point: Switch it up. Train upper/lower body splits if you avoid failure completely, three day split if you do go to failure.

  • @itzeyadig depends on what you're going for. Going all the way is good to hit triceps as well as chest. Half way is good for more tension on mainly just ur chest. If you're a powerlifter all the way is good. If ur a bodybuilder halfway is good. But at the end of the day it's just advice so you can do whatever the fuck you wanna do!

  • Going to failure every set during every exercise could lead to an overstressed CNS which could result in overtraining and immune system repression. Sure, going to failure for a set or two here and there is a good training technique, but I wouldn't recommend it for every single workout!

  • I go to failure but Im pretty sure there's some benefits to not doing so. Many powerlifters I know say to not train to failure when trying to get stronger because it will burn out your cns.

    Imo this is one of the differences between Bodybuilders and powerlifters, BBers lift to failure, build more muscle. PLers don't, develop strength a lot quicker.

  • i think it depends on the individual/age ect if hitting failure works on every set.. personally ive been training for 10 yrs in my 20's i hit failure on every set and improved alot aslong as i didnt do to many sets.. but now at 34 if i hit failure on every set i loose strength! so now i just hit it on the last set but sometimes i stay well off faliure..but to you twins, when cutting prob best to stay of failure, i always do 80% powerlifting routines while cutting and get stronger and bigger

  • If you have been training for over a year you will get better results by going to failure everytime. If you burn out your central nervous system its cause you're not getting enough rest.

    It was my last workout for the day and I decided to finsih off with dips, I went to failure, than tried a last set, only doing 3 reps. Felt limp after that. and after about 3 days I flexed my arm then felt my tricep and shoulder and noticed bruising. Green bruises, 2 of them, with a line of a bruise connecting them. I think a muscle may be fucked up, and now I have to skip a day of triceps due to stupidity.
