Japanese sometimes exhibit affections for useless, impractical but mighty and impressive piece of machinery. I think it comes from their innate love for technological achievement. You may not believe this but Japanese also find atomic weapons with the same sort of curiosity. I avoid the use of affection in this particular instance as some may find it offensive, though I personally believe that it is about time we grew up and examine every aspect of war with realism and fairness.
Taking their affection towards the Germans in good faith, I think it stems from their love for manufacturing. Some, not many, Japanese also believe that the French and the British tried to milk Germany a little too much, and this gives rise to sympathy.
The Japanese and the Germans are both very serious people, whereas the English are often cynical and have a good eye for the other side of everything. J and G therefore sometimes invent mighty but useless, impractical stuff.
