why do people care so much about if john uses auto tune? years and years of kick ass live performances that john has done clearly display that he has an extremely awe inspiring talent in both singing and guitar playing, he can sound just as good live as he does in the studio! auto tune is just becoming another tool in the plug in arsenal of sound engineers today, a few minor alterations of pitch here and there....who cares? we know he can sing very well :)
The thing is auto-tune doesn't make bad singers sound good! Auto-tune is used to fix minor pitch discrepancies. I challenge you to find me one popular artist today who didn't use auto-tune to some degree on their records. Its like saying you have a terrible headache. Its not going to kill you if you just leave it but why not fix it with some meds.
@musicnlongboards or why not stop being so fucking lazy and just re-do the lines where you've gone slightly off pitch?? Yeah, it's hard for even the very best of singers to get a flawless vocal take all the way through, so what you do is just 'drop in' on the parts you made mistakes on and re-record them. It's what I do, rather than be lazy and use pitch correction, which, even when transparent sounds lifeless and unnatural. As big a fan as I am of John, he's just being lazy.
Man, everyone uses some form of Autotune. Studio time is expensive, and minor "blemishes" to a vocal (or instrument) track these days just get fixed in software. It's not changing the artistic intent. It's just a means to an end. Look up videos on "Pro Tools" "Elastic Audio" (the software most studio's use to mix/edit).
The whole anti-autotune movement is more about using the tool as an effect (the "cher" voice). Clearly JM ain't like dat..

If people that couldn't sing could just use autotune like you guys assume. Then everyone would be signed to major recording labels.... Get real. That's not how it works. Autotune is like medications. There's nothing wrong with it unless abused.
This video is misconstrued in a way that shows he's a bad person for using autotune. If you watch the complete ustream video that's not the way it is. As for all of you people that are so disgusted by the idea of people using autotune, you'll have to realize every artist studio edits their songs. Get over it. Other than that. Watch videos of him singing live. He doesn't need it. He hits the pitches and sings just fine. He's not using it to completely fake a voice like Tpain. It's studio cleanup.
@darkrocker0007 Well, actually, you're wrong about T-Pain. The ironic thing about T-Pain is that he actually CAN sing without Auto-Tune, but he uses Auto-Tune as a style than an aid. He liked the sound and wanted to use it on purpose. It's the likes of Lil Wayne you've got to worry about. Bleh. But yeah, I get your point. Though, I'm not even sure if John was being sarcastic or not there--he one time joked that he didn't write Daughters, to a most gullible crowd of girls.
@darkrocker0007 so 'studio cleanup' makes it ok? C'mon, gimme a break! the guy CAN sing well, has it in him to do it, and has time and money to spend in the studio get a good vocal take - all it is is fucking lazyness. I spend a lot of time in the studio comping different vocal takes together in the studio to get a good performance, rather than resorting to using autotune, which, even when transparent sounds robotic and unnatural.
I feel exactly like luke skywalker. I had no idea John uses autotune! I always loved him cause I thought he sings so well without having to resort to that crap like all the talentless rap and hip hop people out there. I still love John but... One of my favorite things about Where the Light Is (my fav album by him) was that it was live, which means no autotune at all. But I was wrong... I feel so cheated and lied to.
lol any professional artist uses auto tune to clean up there records. they have to. But like he says in the video there is good and there is bad. the auto tune john mayer uses is more pitch correction. If hes off key a little bit. even for the slightest millisecond. its corrected. But when recording. You are so concentrated on your singing that hardly happens. the actual auto tune hardly ever has to do its correction. just when needed
@tcornell05 no one has to use autotune - it's just lazyness and bad practice. A good singer can spend time getting a good vocal take if they want to, even if it means combining several vocal takes into one (which is what I often do.) John is just being lazy by fixing things with pitch correction, because he has the time, money & talent to get it right. Pitch correction sounds awful, no matter how transparent. It's a bad practice that I wish would die already.
@marcreevesmusic Whatever helps you sleep tonight, big guy :) You get signed, guarantee your label will have some form of autotune placed on your record.
@tcornell05 I've been sound engineering for almost 3 - means nothing, so I don't see your point there. No record label would ever place autotune on my records - I don't have any intention of signing a contract right now anyway. although the vast majority of records you hear nowadays have pitch correction on them, a huge amount don't either. Laura Marling, Johnny Flynn, Fionn Regan, The Frames, Lisa Hannigan, Silverchair etc - I know Daniel Johns from Silverchair specifically refused having it
@marcreevesmusic you dont understand that labels use it to spice up records. record are products to be sold. The cleaner the music, the more money made. That's my point. And that's why its used. The autotune mayer talks about here is no different than polishing a glass before placing it on the shelf.
But again, whatever helps you sleep tonight. lol, and good luck with your contract you hope to have one day. Rofl.
@tcornell05 And you can carry on being a sheep that just bleats the same crap over and over. You really have no idea. Autotuning is a technique used by lazy/incapable engineers, producers and musicians, and it's been used so much that record companies have started to mistake it as something that sells. In reality there are many records which sound just as good (or better even) and sell just as well without it.
@marcreevesmusic Lazy/incapable engineers? Fact is that auto tune makes vocals sound more professional in a good mix. Even if the vocals did a perfect job it will smoothen everything and add that subtle extra shine that makes the music sound better together. You can make an ego issue out of it, but it's like refusing to let an engineer use EQ or compression on your voice. No it isn't natural, but yes, it will enhance how it sounds to deliver the best, most musical, product
@tcornell05 I have no interest in a record deal right now, but even if I did - your suggestion that me not using pitch correction would hinder me having a successful career is unbelievably stupid, and shows you clearly have absolutely no idea what you are talking about. And not to mention that a record deal isn't even necessarily needed to have a successful career as a recording artist, despite you in your ignorance suggesting otherwise.
@marcreevesmusic Autotune is, I dare say, in the majority of cases not used to fix anything. It's used to enhance. It won't make a bad singer sound good. It will just make it sound obviously autotuned. There's no masking talent with it. No one would say Kanye West is a good singer for example, 'cause it's so apparently auto tuned. Are you implying that singers should train to get a perfect voice? Voices of the best singers aren't perfect and it's desired to use auto tune to make a better mix
@vincentjdrummer I am well aware of what autotune does/doesn't do. And yes I am absolutely implying that singers should work hard to be the best they can be - that's like saying there's no point a guitarist learning to play rhythm parts well, because it can just be edited in time - it defeats the point, and also will never be as good as a natural performances. Besides, you said it yourself, voices aren't perfect, so let them be imperfect!
I can immediately tell that he's used auto tune on records and live. I like John Mayer's music... but having to use auto-tune... to me it takes away some of the credibility of the artist's talent as a singer. I mean should a guy who uses auto-tune on his recordings get a grammy for best vocal performance - or should it be for - most tansparent auto-tune. I've never used auto-tune on records. I may have to do lots of takes, but at least it's me and not some computer approximation of my voice
@davetatemusic exactly! He has the time and money, and talent, to just comp several vocal takes together. The studio is not as natural an environment for a singer as live is, so naturally even for the best of vocalists it's hard to get a perfect take all the way through - so for years and years artists have been comp'ing several takes together. Transparent autotuning is the lazy alternative & it degrades the quality of the human voice.
seriously though check out any of the clips fans post from his gigs and it's pretty easy to tell that he uses auto tune. i mean on the records you could maybe assume that he just does a shit load of takes but do you really think he just miraculously found great technique for the three sets on where the light is?
I love John Mayeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer, thaaaaat is alllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll :) Have a lurvely day everybodyyy.
