I saw Mr. Smith in a San Antonio Opera production of Boheme several years ago and his sound flooded the small hall they were in at that time. I knew then he was something special and see now that he has grown into bigger roles quite well. Bravo!
@vivadomingo1 The MET wants pretty boys with designer hair and who look good in swim suits. Voice is optional, although anything heavier than a Nemorino voice simply cannot be allowed in in the big Verdi and Puccini roles.
I worked with Roy at Opera Memphis for this opera, and his is still the best performance of Nessum Dorma I've ever heard. I was always late for my costume change because I'd stay behind and listen to this part backstage. :-) Our costumes were better, too! He's a great guy, too.
I saw that production, and the night I saw it he sang 10 times better, I don't like him in the video, live was magical. Congratulations to the creators of such beautiful and powerful production!
One of the most beautyful tenor voices I have heard. Its the first time to day,NOT the last. (A Carreras like beauty, but less vibrato) Would like a little longer high note though in the end. Kári Friðriksson tenor from Iceland.(The best is that my vife thought (first) that I was listening to my video of this aria (me singing)so I hope I will sound like this after some more lessons and training.) Bravo Smith!!!
Just heard Smith in his NY City Opera debut in ESTHER. Aside from being blown away (nearly literally) by the size of the voice, I was even more impressed by the range of his tonal palette: Playing the village Haman, he purposely sang with an edgy bluster... yet when Haman needed to endear himself to the King of Persia, Smith took on a sweeter sound. That kind of vocal versatility -- "acting through the voice" -- is a rare virtue in today's opera world.

I've heard this sung by many other singers, but I think he does it the best- esp in person. Such a beautiful bass in his voice. Such power! Love it!!

The guy is good, but he certainly should have held the last note a few seconds more!!!!!!
