I was lucky enough to see the Airplane from mid 66 on, and was there the last night Signe sang with the band, and for the next night, Grace's first. They were more famous with Grace, and she's a very good singer. But I liked the Airplane better with Signe. they were more unified, more of one vision, or so it seemed. As I recall, it was Signe's choice to leave to raise her baby (who would be 45 now. Sheesh). My favorite early SF band, and I love 'em still.
You know, hard to tell without hearing them both live, ideally without amplification. But can't help wondering whether Janis and Signe had similar voices regarding size and power -- now that I'm thinking of her, gotta put Grace in there as well:) -
Make no mistake, I love Grace at her best. But Signe was (is?) a terrific singer, with a powerful, soulful and bluesy voice. LOVE her. I ask "is?", because I've heard that Signe, who lives in the Pacific Northwest, still performs from time to time:) --
I first knew of JA, in the mid 80s ( was 15 in '86) Didn't even know about Signe, at the time. When I did get this cd, this song blue me away. Her vocals are amazing. VERY under-rated.

This is Signe, the original female singer, not Grace.

Sorry, I meant to reply to EBursey. I really like the last picture of the group you have here. Thanks so much for the post.
