I was at this, and it was awesome. Granted 5.10.95 is still the definitive version, but to see a full band treatment (albeit a little sloppy) of it was great. 2:00 only hints at it's potential. Love the smirks on Carter and Stefan's faces. They know how rare it is, and how bugged out the fans that realize what's going on are.
I have'nt heard them all obviously, but i think Listener Supported has the best version as well. It's shorter and it's pretty much a Dave solo with a couple of really cool contributions from Carter (drumms). Dave's voice in that version is so clean and crisp.
best version ever is on listener supported in my opinion.. lyrics improved so damn well and carter's backups is so beautiful..but this version is very nice too..
ya dave doesnt even have lyrics for this song.. his lyrics are almost set improv... he doesnt have have any lyrics written down yet for this song... sick song though
On FUSE, Dave commented that there was a version of this song circulating, but that he didn't write any versions down of this song?...maybe he should listen to this version and write it down!
Have you noticed that we haven't heard American Baby, Dream girl, or the more original version of Idea of You (before the babysitter came on the scene) in almost two seasons?
I stand corrected, yes "idea of you" is played quite regularly...not the version I had in mind when i typed this, --- the revision was played quite regularly last year.
I was at that show too....Dave said on a recent FUSE interview, that he just made up the lyrics on the spot night 2....I guess he wasn't inspired to do so on night 1....guess he forgot what happened night 1...that inspired him for night 2! Yes, this is a great version! SeekUP!
I agree, it's one of the most touching pieces of his music I've heard him do in a long time. What a terrific version of this song. Sometimes Dave gets it so right!
LeRoy, you will be missed... especially in the core of all the DMB songs... I can't imagine an album without you... I played the same woodwinds as you, I hope to see you later...
There is no original. It's an amazing song that he rarely plays. He will often tease with just the intro chords, and then start playing another song. The lyrics also vary greatly. This is one of the longest versions of the song I have ever heard. Previous to this the longest I knew was from 'Listener Supported'. He also plays this on 'Live at Piedmont Park'. Beautiful song !!
which storytellers? not the one with the full band, it must of been the one with timmy??? could you send me that version of it? I've never seen the whole storytellers before...if that's what it is...I've only seen a few of the clips on youtube. thanks
well it just says storytellers, i got off limewire and its definitely him and tim, but i've seen the Dave and Tim Storytellers, and they don't play #40 its 4:48 so maybe its from Yoshi's and just labeled wrong
So is it here on youtube? I looked but didn't spend much time at it. But that seems the time that I had a version of it. Let me know. Thanks for your help.
Yoshi's is the closest thing to an actual version of this song. It times out at about 4:40 and in general the show is considered a classic and one of their best. It's actually one of the video responses for this song. Click the one on the left and you'll be able to hear the Yoshi's version.
It was the location of the show. It was at a place called Yoshi's (at Jack London Square) in Oakland, CA. The date of the show was 5/10/95, if you want to look at it on any dmb fan club site.
They teased it night one of SPAC...then Dave said they'd work on it and play it the next night...I never imagined they really would...best live version of #40 I've heard...and what an incredible show...one of the best I've seen in years.
this is the best version ive heard of #40, im pissed i went to the first night but didnt have enough for the 2nd and he only teased it the first night
This is truly amazing thank you for the upload. This show is one that will go down in DMB history for sure. I would love to see anymore footage that you have if you are willing to upload.
wrigley please
