  • wow... thanks for the effort to inform all of us... this is great stuff...

  • sir put some new vdios ,

  • Well keeping in mind that What I have in mind is to use my radio for FLV or just to put a camera and broadcast to my Screen Glasses to have a virtual flight I humbly will request that you make a test with the receiver in a considerable altitude! I don't know may be........ 500 feet? Just my personal opinion. Thanks for the video it give me many great Ideas.

  • You got mugs on ( man uggs) lol

  • Very cool! and Very appreciated.

  • the hitec eclipse 7 how meany M ?

  • good very helpful also do some range test on futaba 6 ex and some cheap chinese stuff

  • will the dx6ihave the same range as a dx3r?

  • The dx6i has DSM2, and the dx3r has too. But will they have about the same in range? :)

  • Now I really know why I lost my Guanli A-10

I'm gonna buy a spektrum receiver.. no more RTF TxRxs

  • Nice job boys in all that cold....Would like to see more test done like this ....

This is a practical and simple way of comparison ...

    De VO1ET Jerry

  • great test!

fwiw, i've been able to spec out a 40" wing (electric) with the DX6i / AR6110e just the same as the JR 7202 (w/JR tx whip antenna) / FMA M5 72mhz FM rx but with half the tx battery

  • Thanks for the Help.

  • Thanks very much. i was looking for this info..

  • Good comparison. Fair due to all tests were conducted in the same way.

You generally should get more range in the air as you get a better line of site, and less interference

  • very good video dave!

i enjoyed it :). would the dx5e radio be similar would you think?

  • loving the music in the background :D.

what is that! very happy tune :D

  • @mke15 The song is a free song in Pinnacle Studio. It's called "Streets of Italia". I love it too, so relaxing!

  • @KvornanTheLafesta oh thanks!.

    and yeah it is!!

  • This is a good demonstration, but you have to test the futaba 617 and the spektrum 6200 too...

  • 5 stars specialist as always ! Congrats

  • cooo000l stuff

  • Hi Dave,

Could you kindly test the FlySky 2.4 Ghz 9 Ch Radio. Please.

  • Nice job! this will be great reference in the future. I think it would be interesting to know the range of "full-range" spektrum receivers like the AR6200. 5* on another great video Jeff and Dave.

  • hahaha pause at 7:01 smiley servos :)

  • whats the difference between AM and FM?

because i got a u can do with my up-to-date radio system (FM skysport radio) and my dad got a futaba conquest radio (AM and was discontinued in 1997) and he wants to put it in my avistar. will there be any problems? (btw both radios are 72mhz)

  • simple visual range testing, very good idea dave, gives people a good idea of how they can-not see the aircraft way before it goes out of range. nice one. 5*

  • Awesome vid Dave! I wanted to make a vid testing my Walkera CB180Q as some say it has range issues. I wanted to do the test by flying it and measuring the distance with a laser rangefinder. You showed me that there are better ways to test that and I'd lose sight of the heli pretty soon. So instead of buying a rangefinder I bought a Walkera CB100 :D

    Dave you're the best ;)

  • 2500 ft? guess im gonna have to try this. lol Aerobird Commander, say's on the box 2500ft. guess the cheapest one i own is the best haha, hummmm true or false? what do you think Dave, Jeff??

  • Nice work! Good to know how those new 6110's perform. 1300 feet is pretty darn far. I flew a 2M glider that high once and had a real hard time controlling it due to it being quite small. I'd love to see more Spektrum range tests on their other receivers, like the AR500, AR7000, and the AR9000/JR921. It's a bit too "urban" by me to try these things :)

  • would be fun to see how the spektrum ar7000 performs since the 6110 isn't a full range receiver! still nice work!

  • I wonder how the Spektrum AR500 full range compares. Thats what I use in my Super Chipmunk

  • That Exceed looks great for the money, Thanks for the info Dave.

I think I may get one of those TX/RX packages, I wanna add flaps on my 182 and that would suit the bill nicely.

5* Thanks for all the info you put out there, just wish I was your neighbor, you are lucky Jeff Martin.

  • LOL...Thank you kindly.

    Jeff

  • I just bought my hanger 9 alpha 40 rtf. I can't start it because when I turn on the tx\rx the throttle servo opens all the way and then won't respond to any input. but only the throttle every thing else functions properly.Tried rebinding and it didn't help any.Does anyone have any suggestions. am i doing something wrong?? i'm a newb please help!

    thanks

  • @Unboltedsteak Did you try reversing that servo. Does it close the throttle when you reverse the stick? Try pushing stick to full throttle then hooking up battery on RX in plane. I have seen a few you have to do that way as well.

  • didnt help thanks though i'm pretty sure there is a problem with the rx cause it does same thing to every servo i plug into that channel. and the throttle servo is not broken cause when i try it on a different channel it functions normally thanks anyway but i think this receiver is broken

  • Try to find if it has throttle cut activated and if it is reversed (the throttle channel i mean)

  • The first thing we are going to do in this video is pry Dave out of the back of the van! LOL Keep up the great videos Dave love em!!!!!

  • o hai nightflyyer

  • Ahh, the good old Uniden radio's, i have them exact ones!

  • Great job. You probly do know how many times i've been ask that question, now i have an answer. Thanks :-)

  • nice range test i have a dx6i very happy with the radio

  • No real surprise there then, Spektrum supposed to have 2000 feet.... Give or take.

  • Thank you for doing this range check!

  • Great test. Glad I don't have cold weather like that here in BC.

Thanks for freezing your butts off to show us this. Go Spektrum.

  • Thanks Dave, good vid. !!! (DX6I here) .

I still remember Excapment radios (LOL)

Radios have come a long way :-)

  • You ran that stop sign

  • Great Info and video 5*

  • I am the PROUD owner of a DX6i

  • I'm from Nyc, the inner city.. I've always wanted an RC plane or Helipcopter and I wonder how much fun it would be to fly this off a 5 story building's roof and stuff like that. I'm 23 and have never seen something like that I bet it would be pretty cool to see though.

  • lol the suspense is killing me!!!

  • Actually no... the receiver has nothing to do with the signal strength. The signal comes from the transmitter, and the receiver itself does not have a range limit - it can hear any transmission which is loud enough, and it doesn't matter how far away the signal originated. The "park flyer" designation for a receiver has to do with its power limits, not the range. a full-size plane setup on a 6110 will fail 10 feet away - too much power, has nothing to do with the range.

  • You know, I worked at Kraft RC radio systems for many years. I know how this stuff works. I agree with all your comments except the last one. The Receiver does not care what size the plane is. I have been flying a AR 6100 in my 1/3 Nito Pitts (see vids) for 2 years. Doing the same kind of range test, my DX6i & AR-6100 RX still has further range with no glitching than any of my other stuff, even in that plane. So, out here...I feel better with it in there over some of my other stuff. Thanks.

  • Really? We had two of them fail, and it was repeatable - we determined it was because the servos were pulling too much power for the little receiver. The RX got hot, and then failed. We took the same one and put it in a foamy and it was all good. Does it not matter how many amps go through the RX? Cuz maybe there is still a problem with this guy's plane? He switched it to a Hitec 72MHz and flew it just fine, but I don't know, maybe he's got a bad servo or battery or something.

  • the 6100 is the parkflyer and if i remember correctly rated for the standard 9 gram micros. i believe only four. mine did fail similarly due to the use of 4 larger nitro plane size servos for this wacky project i was working on. i switched to the larger ar6200 series with no issues. that small park flyer reciever is just not designed to have large servo draw on it. i've put it very large models as long as the servo number was low or they were 9 grams like the hs55 will little power consumption.

  • Jasmine, the difference in range between a Spektrum full range reciever and "park" reciever is massive.

In my experience, the Spektrum "park" recievers are only reliable to about 2 football field lengths (Consistent w/ Dave's findings). I have not yet found the limit of my full range recievers, but I've exceeded the aforementioned limit by multiples. (That's using the same radio in both cases).

  • cool test

but why no futaba on the test ?

  • Thanks. I don't fly much Futaba anymore since Spektrums, and these were simply my radios I use a lot.

  • now, what if you used a full rang spectrim, 5,000 feet!

  • The TX still wont transmit any further due to lawful power output, so no matter how good the RX, I don't think you will see too much more range under these test conditions. Besides, no one can even see the plane good enough to fly at 400 feet, let alone 5000!. LOL

  • Great vid and ifo, but i couldnt help you did not stop for the stop sign. ;)

    But great info!!! Thanx!!!

  • He'll stop twice next time.....

  • Yep not a car for miles in any direction, so to complete the video smoothly, I rolled through very slowly. Thanks.

  • Very cool, never imagined that the Exceed will do so good!!!

I have a DX6i, but its good to know that an Exceed can be trusted.

  • Thanks. Well my rule of thumb is, that if electronics work for 10 minutes, then they will probably work 10 years. I have full faith in my T-6 and will have a video up about it later today. Stay tuned and thanks.

  • Does temperatures have any effect on the transmission distances?

  • yes it does

in my experience the cold weather limited range and If you read the instructions for your receiver it says it is designed for r/c planes and when you do the distance test that you make sure that the plane is on a high place or have someone hold the plane in the air for you

  • True. But I must say, if my radio is glitching all over the place on the ground when I am range testing, I would have no faith. Hold it up and then it works?......Hmmmm?

  • Yes. It was 25 degrees for this test, but again all radios were exposed to the same conditions, making it fair.

  • a 6110 is not a full range receiver. you could probably double your result if you use a full range spektrum receiver.

  • A different receiver will not increase the range of the TRANSMITTER somehow. 6110 is not labeled as full range, but none the less, It has more range without glitching than any of my other radios. How could I not feel good about that?

  • Wow, the Exceed Rc and the Hitec are basically the same. However, the Exceed Rc one is $44 and the Hitec one is between $100-$150

    Thanks

  • i would trust the dx6i more the exceed rc

  • Dave! did I see you blast throuh the stop sign! The 18-wheeler that crossed behind you did not stop! :( !

    dick

  • Great vid, interesting results! Great job guys! It's nice to see what great ranges modern day tx's/rx's have.

  • Thanks Scott. I will call you later today to see whats up with your 18 wheeler and where you are. Take care.

  • Thanks for the great vid. I really was surprised when i saw the results at the end. Another really nice video, i always did wonder about which was better,FM or 2.4 radios. now i know, thanks. Great video as usual.

  • Dave, I love the way you just blew through that stop sign several times, LOL. Excellent video. Very informative. 5*

  • Thanks for the video comparison, Dave and Jeff. This will makes flying for safe and less costly in terms of glitches= crashes. good job and awaiting more helpful videos. 5 *s!!!!

  • Thanks for this impressive Video-clip.I am using a 35mghz radio,no range problems,but soon I will have a 2,4ghz radio !

  • Very cool video!! I always wondered which was better, DX6i or my FMs....this helps :)

  • Excellent work Dave and you Jeff

    Spektrum is the Daddy

I fly a glider with the AR500 and I use the eagle tree systems Altimeter and have recorded 2,174 feet so far but I guess going up does increase the range. 5 star gents

  • Thanks. Yes, going up increases the range with all radios, but again it all depends on the Power output of the Transmitter which is limited by FCC.

  • Hey Dave, awesome video! Would you recommend replacing the tx and rx in the FMS skytrainer with the $44.95 exceed RC tx and rx?

  • Yes. Thanks kindly.

  • You should get a dx7

  • Great video. I love the effort you put into creating interesting videos. Thank you very much!

  • Thanks very kindly.

  • great video, it confirms my newbie thoughts that you'll lose sight of the plane before you lose control of the plane.

  • Thanks. Very well said.

  • that cracks me up, the ar6100 is only the small park flyer version receiver and beat the exceed with the secondary receiver. i have the 6100 park flyer and the 6200 one and never gone out of range even with large scale models. the 6200 has that same external secondary reciever like the exceed radio and would go even farther. i guess i made a good choice with spektrum. great video.

  • Thanks kindly. Well said. I like my Spektrums too.

  • awsome video....very informative.....you should see how much range does a JR radio have.

  • Thanks. Most will be about the same, because there is only so much power allowed to be transmitted. The Receivers cannot somehow increase the TX range.

  • i wonder who was in that car that stopped and jeff talked to? someone they knew or some random person who was like wtf are these guys doing?

  • That was my wife.

  • is the exceed any good? why is it so cheap?

  • the exceed/hobbyking controllers are great. they are cheap becuase you program them on the computer and not on the tx, there technically is no model memory either but you can save profiles on the computer and just rebing to your different planes. your also not paying for the spektrum name and hobbyking is a fairly large business which allows them to lower prices .

  • Well said.

  • Mass production and exactly as mxf7010g8k said below.

  • that's good stuff Dave. 5*****

  • Thanks.

  • HAHA! loved the ending! "well i know what radios i wanna buy now"

  • Great info!

  • Thanks.

  • Btw....It should be noted that this test was done at ground level which severely limits the range of all radio systems and that in flight range would be far longer.

Also the AR6110 is an short range park flyer rx,An AR6200 would have went further,Spektrum full range RX's are rated to 1.1 mi at ground level.

  • i said the same thing. its funny the spektrum park flyer beat the exceed which is supposed to be like the spekctrum 6200 with that external secondary receiver.

  • Yes, but all radios were tested the same way, so range is relative. Certainly it could be done better at a higher altitude, but if my radios glitch on the ground....I dont use them.

THe range is not determined by the RX, but the transmitter and it's legal FCC output. Some RXs are cleaner and less glitch, but it is the TX that has the power.

  • The Guanli fell short of it's stated 1000' range. Range might be a little further if the plane was in the air, still a very long distance. I used to like to fly my planes out as FAR as I could and then bring them back.... back when my eyesight was better! Awesome video, the information is invaluable.

  • Thanks. It would be hard for me to see a plane at even 500 feet. It is way more fun to fly and watch your planes anyway, so getting as far away, doesn't compute with me. 800 feet is more than you may think. Thanks for the comments and support.

  • Dave very cool video! So about a 1/4 mile for the Spectrum and others. very close to it.

People ask me how far will they go and I always say as far as you can see it. And by looking at the video there is no way you could fly something that size in that max range unless your "Lee Majors" haha.

Very cool video thanks for posting! 5 stars

  • Well minus the last two

  • Thank you and very well said.

  • I wonder where my Futaba 6ex would have ranged out at

  • Try it and let us know. Tx power output is the limiting factor and I know Futaba used the Max allowed by the FCC.

  • Awesome tx/rx evaluation, I always wondered, now I know :-)

  • Thanks very kindly.

  • i hope u bought jeff a beer for doing all that walking

looks cold out there better make that a hot cup of java.

and as u say 600ft is too far to see the avaerge plane

well stay warm look forward to the next dog fight

  • Thanks kindly. Bud...wieser....! ? LOL We had our dogfight and it has a Spectacular ending. Stay tuned.

  • I could see when you were testing the range on the Exceed 2.4 that the receiver had fallen off the jar lid that you had the receivers mounted to. I don't know where it fell to as I only watched the video once. But you did state that they were all tested the same in relative same interference yet the exceed Rx was located even closer to the ground than all the others. A great radio for the price indeed; thanks for the video and your efforts!!

  • Thanks. Yep is it just hanging on the side of the bottle, not too far away. It was all relative and a probably still not as typical as a rx wrapped in a tight compartment with servos and esc around. Thanks. I do have faith in it, and range is way more than double of where I could fly.

  • Good info there ! ( Spektrum here :) ) And it should be even better in real world conditions !

    Thanks !

  • Thanks kindly. Your right.

  • Very nice, Dave.

Considering you stayed at ground level, those were actually impressive ranges. Flying in the air actually increases the range from a lack of rf disturbances... as opposed to the ground.

And I 100% agree: Most planes will loose visibility long before you go out of range. It is usually pilot error that automatically faults Tx/Rx issues.

  • Very well said. Thanks kindly.

  • was that ar6110 receiver full range?

  • @jeflatt The AR6110 is a parkflyer receiver, not a full range receiver. I use one in my Exceed RC F-22 EDF and I've had no issues with range. I'm sure a full range receiver would have even more range.

  • The range is limited by the TX more than the RX. The RX cannot somehow increase the signal of the tx.

  • Well is says Parkflyer and not full range, but It had longer range than any of my other radios, so I have lots of faith in it.

  • I'll tall you what Dave and Jeff... Great work! For the park flyer to AR received by Spektrum to make that distance, I am impressed. I would imagine their two pole receiver would be huge! ~ James

  • Thanks. Maybe, but remember it is the TX output that makes the range. The power output is limited by the FCC and cannot be increased. The receiver is only as good as what it can see, so not sure how much further you could go. Going further than 600 feet is too far away to see the planes, so anything left over is simply a safety zone. Thanks.

  • This is why I fly JR/Spektrum.

  • Why? Did you do a range check like this on them too? Law allows only a certain amount of power to transmit. The spread spectrums all have the same power output and are very close. Even JR.

  • The TX power output determines the range, not the rx.

  • This is a pretty un-fair comparison. First off the Spektrum is their lower, parkflyer model receiver. Second, 2.4 is a line of sight frequency, and I"m betting your car was blocking a good bit of the signal. The 72mhz is a full range, so that's a bit unfair to the 2.4.

It'd be nice if you compared other 2.4 systems, as well. IMO Spekrum is not the best, or even near it anymore.

    Thanks for the great video!

  • @GliderPilotRR Just testing what I have sir..And that is fair enough for me. Parkflyer had more range anyway and way further than you could fly and see it.

  • someone should have sit in the back while he was driving still a good test why no futaba test

  • I dont fly Futaba anymore and these are my radios, that I own. They are the only ones I care about, as I use them all the time.

  • Comment removed

  • what do you think the range in the air is for the exceed?

  • Hey I guessed the order right :)

  • Congrats.

  • That's true for a foamy, but with some larger gliders and gas planes, you could easily do double that.

  • Thats great news and i would be happy with all the ranges on them tx/rx as you wouldn't be able to see your bird in some of the longer ranges,so it's all good ;-) 5*

  • Thanks sir. I appreciate that.

  • Just realised, in the UK the max is 100mW as opposed to the US 200mW so it won't be as good in the UK unless :P

  • Hmmm. I did not know there was a power difference. Thanks.

  • Is this 2.4 or 72 meg ?

  • 35 meg, in the UK that is the equivalent of 72mhz

  • From what I've read you shouldn't trust the Spektrum 6110s or 6100s at more than 600 ft. I know it doesn't sound like much but that's 200 yards or 2 football fields. For parkflyers that's a long ways to fly away from yourself.

  • @metalmikexx 600 feet is double what the FIrebird phantom had, and I never flew it out of range, at only 300 feet. 600 is way more than you think.

  • That's what I was trying to say. Unless you're flying a larger plane that can be seen at great distances 600ft shouldn't be a problem. Not to mention the price savings of the lower end recievers like those.

  • Blimey, 1,297.5 feet for a park fly!!! god knows what the full range sets do! that might be an interesting test, doing ar500s and ar6200s

  • I doubt too much better, as the range of the transmitter has a lot to do with it, and its power if fixed. Thanks.

  • Thanks Dave. Great review.

better start to dust off on my Eclipse7 :P

  • Thanks kindly. Lets fly.

  • You guys rock i hope to be like the 2 of you when im older

  • You are very kind. Thank you.

  • can u add me as a friend

  • Lol i was doing exactly the same thing yesterday! Testing my old 35mhz gear

  • Great. How did you do it?

  • Taped a bit of balsa onto a servo arm and walked down the garden, it looks really jittery but this may be cause the aerial was touching the ground, i will try it again.

  • awesome test. You guy are great. Thank you both for taking your own time to make all these videos and to put up with the weather.

I can not tell you how much you have educated me from your videos.

    Many thanks.

  • Thanks very kindly.

  • Wow, I sure am hoping the range through the air is much longer then what it is on the ground. 1000 feet ain't much...

  • I guarantee it is. Especially with 2.4. But again, he was testing with a parkflyer 2.4 system and some no name 2.4 system. With a better, full range system the range would be much better.

  • Yea, I flew a longer distance myself with a Futaba 35 MHz without a problem. I figured the radios that came in kits would have a low range, but I though the 2.4 GHz's would have a bit better range, even on the ground.

  • You could not see to fly it at 600 feet, so I wouldn worry too much. THe firebird range is only 350 feet and it gets too small to fly out of range.

  • what happens if the antenna hit the ground?

  • It may reduce the range a bit.

  • Great range test Dave! Thanks for the input.
