When I was in Tibet two years ago much of this pageantry had been suppressed by the Chinese Police State. In Bhutan these festivals and holidays are still annual events in Paro and Thimbu. Tibet is a different state now and thousands of Chinese have entered the country bringing with them Chinese culture not Tibetan.

i admit that china's handling of minorities are just BAD. the gov't is very insensitive and dumb in such matters. however, one must admit that china freed tibetans from its rigid social structure that is almost like the caste system in india only its worse.

of course the chinese gov't is overreacting to many things but it's learning. this has to do with culture and the fact that the communist party has to stay in control. china can easily become another soviet union.

i've seen many silly acts of gov't officials that were carried out with good intentions. people are just ignorant, esp. those in rural china. china was stagnant for several hundred years, what do you expect?

the way the chinese gov't handles the ppl now believe me is fairly similar to what i've learned in my chinese history lessons.

remember the cultural differences. the gov't structure throughout the centuries, the huge population, etc, all help shaped today's china. i hate that the gov't is very insensitive but there were >400 mil ppl in china about 400 years ago when china was very poor. excuse us if we don't value human lives/rights too much. but that is changing now, slowly but surely.

my general thought on the CP is that it's good for china for now so it's good. democracy probably won't work (see india). the CP is not the CP back in the 1960s. now because many chinese have become rich, they're starting to ask for luxury items like freedom. the CP is still very much a tyrant but it's fully aware that it has to keep its people happy. so, let china get rich and most issues will resolve themselves.

CP is not the same because in the 1960s the threat of people overturning the gov't is not credible but it is now so CP has to care about its people now.

people now know what they can have so they ask whereas in the past they didn't. opening of the economy has allowed the chinese to learn what others are having so the CP can longer do as it pleases. contrast china with n. korea.

the constitution might not have changed but the attitude towards people has.

which is why we have to shrink the wealth gap and i dont' think the CP can do much if chiense dont' care. HK has the highest gini index (a meausre of wealth disparity) amongst developed countries. that of china is >0.4 which is already considered very high. is this the problem of the gov't or the people who let the gov't ignore the poor?

i maintain my position. what we have now is very suboptimal but its' the best we can get for now. can we improve it? sure and please do that.

instead of the gov't, i'm more concerned about raising an average chinese's sympathy and empathy for his/her fellow less fortunate comrade.

the thought of helping the poor is very foreign to many chinese which is why the people in the cities are very okay with leaving those in rural china in dire poverty. it's not that the gov't doesn't care about the poor but there's so much the head of the state can do can do when his subordinates finds no problem embezzling aids and ripping off the poor.
