  • all watched over by machines of loving grace

  • In response to Atemporal, I do recall listening to a BBC program on Radio2 a very long time ago in which Desmond Carrington played this recording (I think it was in the 1970's) and he stated this fact, which I believe to be true. I also remember hearing it played on a BBC program called "Housewives Choice" which was on the air every morning in the 1950's. I think therefore the the statement by Desmond Carrington was indeed true.

  • @lavaronie thank you for this bit. I didn't actually know you replied me 'cause I don't get to know if people do when they write on my channel. Any other interesting memories from the past that you care to share?

  • I believe that this was the very last recording to be received from France at the start of World War 2.

  • @lavaronie oh really? what a curious factoid. any more information about it?

  • Thanks for posting this lovely piece

  • To add to the above, there were two other French songs popular round about the same time as Le Fiacre - La Mer and Boum - both sung by Charles Trenet. I wonder if you know those? Both have postings on Youtube,

  • Jeez, this is a distant early memory from childhood. My parents had the '78. A classic!

  • Yes, I remember it! First heard this song in about 1957 and I searched to find it again; it's on a CD by Jean Sablon, together with lots of other lovely songs by him. Once heard, never forgotten!

  • Truly wonderful! I haven't heard this delightful song for 50 years - on Children's Favorites. Does anyone else in UK remember it?

    A thousand thanks for this.

  • Yes, I remember this song well. It was quite often requested on the Two Way Family Favourites programme presented by Jean Metcalfe and featuring songs asked for by our servicemen serving abroad for their loved ones at home or vice versa. Never really knew what it was all about properly until now but enjoyed it all the same. Nice to hear it again but it doesn't half make me feel old remembering how long ago it is since it was played quite regularly on the radio.

  • @einekleineblues Yes in fact my Mum had a pile of 78s and we used to play them on our old wind-up gramophone. This was among them, I also remember the dramatic B-side, although I can't remember the title.
