I don't think the Pope meant to offend islam, or even offer a veiled attack. He's a man of peace regardless of his failings on child abuse and AIDs comments. Okay, I do not support the Pope, but I do have an opinion.

I feel that the reactions toward his quotation of a Byzantine Emperor are completely unjustified.

You do not hear Christians trumpeting and demanding apologies for the statements of Muslim clerics who aid and propagate jihad against Christians. Naturally, Islam has not got a figure of equivalent position to the Pope, but I do believe that apologies from Muslim clerics condoning jihad are more justified than the Pope's apology.
