  • That sax solo... was not even a solo...

  • @jpaulkee. You play trumpet?

  • If the solo trumpet player would've had a little more confidence, this would've been excellent. :D

  • @zeroKontrolGaming yeah man :), trumpet playing is all about confidence.

  • Lol, there's plenty of Jazz bands with flutes. They do add a nice touch to it if they're put in right. If not, well.. like phinsfan2012 said "flutes = fail"

Don't hate cause they play high notes. ;D Jk.

  • We played this at state jazz festival last year and our bass player used a wah pedal at the begining just like in the real recording, it was funny because one of the adjudicators was abass player and was so uptight about it that he pretty much spent the whole time telling him why he shouldn't of done that...what a jerk.

  • Flutes?! On a Jazz Band?! What the heck?! Since when is there Flutes on a Jazz Band.

  • all out of friggen tune

this is why i stayed out of my hs band

they could not even play in tune.

    the dragging drummer is horrible

    trumpets not terrible

  • @TheGreatSam1992 Thanks to stupid bands like this we have had wonderfull musicians, like Miles Davis, Budy Rich, Billy Coban, and many others.

  • ha ha this reminds me of my high school jazz band days. Exactly the same arrangement. Great tune. So cheezy ha ha

  • WOOOO Over 30,000 views and I'm the first comment! Anyways, great performance... the acoustics of the room aren't that great though.

  • flute in jazz band ....?

  • @daniellexxrockstar Flutes CAN be in jazz band...usually they play other instruments for the rest of the songs and play flute on certain ones, either to add a little flute to the trumpetand/or tenor parts. I taught myself alto to join, and I played alto on all of my jazz band's songs but one on which I played transposed trumpet/tenor parts. But usually, flutes aren't in jazz bands just because you can't hear them over everyone else. Flutes, however, can be amazing jazz instruments (:

  • I play this song with flute¬¬ I think it's good..isn't it??

  • Comment removed

  • flutes? wtf!

  • yeah rock that bari sax! and tenor! ha i play bari sax:)

  • its missing so much, and the pitch harmonics are what i really miss the most

  • They are good, but it's not jazzy and this arrangement is shit

  • That's the easy version of birdlan

  • 1-2-3-4 1+2+3-4

  • this is great!! im playing it too and im not sure whose is better...

  • Yeah tenor saxes!

    Great for a young group!

The only criticism I have is that the alto soloist should maybe try to get into it a little more.

    Great work!

  • OH come on..these KIDS are incredible!!! I have heard college bands not even come close to doing this song justice!

  • not half bad

  • GO ALTO! I'm gonna be playing this song soon. Hope I don't have to solo! That would suck!

  • this sounds similar to how we play it at my school but the trumpet solo...yeah shouldnt be there there should have been a sax that did the solo cause thats what we got

but other than that it was okay ......good job to the kid who messed up a little

it was good over all though

  • oh yeah, i will give props to the Trumpet player that chocked up there, it takes balls to sit down and talk to friends after..i know how he feels.....God bless us trumpet players!!

  • Dude, how the hell can any one say this was good, u had sax solos when it should of been only trumpet solos!honestly, if i had some one to record my performance, you would all know how it should be played...my school played this arrangement and another...the other is better.

  • Sonds like you guys were rushing a little. Nice job sax.

  • our solos kick your guys fuking ass suk it bitches

  • our band played this song we were so much better suck it bitches

  • True, we had french horns there, xD, we stil lgot best in show xD, it should be bair, then tennors, and alots, and flutes, [ going right to left] 2nd row, french horns, and trombones, trombones stand, the back row, trumpets, standing on risers ] best sound u can get, and those music stands for sax are bad, give bad posture, and kidna bad sound, but stil lthey were desent. xD.

  • We play this song in our COUNTRY TOWN (key words right there) jazz band and it is awesome. Overall this band on the vid plays really well and together, which is the problem we have. We aren't as together as this band here. But the start of the song, with the bass, ours blows this band away. Ours is so much stronger. its soft with the bass guitar, bah, bah, bah, then the trombone and bary sax, come blasting in BWAH, BWAH, BWAH-BWAH!!!! it makes the hair on the back of my neck stand on end.

  • haha were playing this at our last concert for jazz band im playing varitone sax which on this song is kinda hard for a 13 yr old

  • i play bari sax 2!!!!!!!!! and were doing this song!

  • love this song, we always play it last at our gigs. whats with the wierd jump at 2.40? and trombones,, well played!!

  • omg our band is playin this. power to the flutes!!!

  • Awesome(:

  • HAHA we played this in marching band.

  • nice....we are playing this same arrangement....i gots 1st trombone :D now all i got to do is hit that freakin high E.....to bad they didnt play it i thought they were gonna hit it :P

  • not bad :) we used this song one year to help win best school jazz band in the state...an thats from out bush :P

  • well, we used a better one to win state on friday.

we used "Get it on" by Chase.

    you should check it out.

its a really fun song to play.

  • We play "Get it On" in pep band, it is really fun. Though our band is good we don't do competitions because our director doesn't like to take any risks or such.

  • lol.

well, i'd love to hear your band, if you have any vids. :P

  • We play "Get it on" but our director wont let us play it for competitions. which i find rediculous because we play it better than any of our other songs.

  • The guys who stands up and does the solo in this video,

looks scarily similar to the guy who does that part in our band o.O

    Creepy.

    Good job though !

  • I wish we had some videos of our band playing this

we don't have nice stuff but we sound good

  • the saxes are the best i love playing the saxophone too its awesome

  • i <3 trumpet

  • my high school in California plays this! i love this song! its my favorite jazz peice....... coming from an orchestra student :)

  • we playing this honestly i think we got one of the best rythm sections or a middle school in our area our bass is beastly he can play almost anything and our drummer kicks ass (me) (= and guitarist is amazing paino is good to

  • that's gotta be the most pathetic and depressed trumpet section i've ever seen....geez guys get your horns above the stands at least

  • hahahaha a flute in a jazz band.... how cheap they are not worth it...

  • I love playing this. After the second rest section (about 6 or 7 measures) I can feel the ground shake in the band room.

  • I love playing bird land the tenor part is always so much fun

  • Yea! Go Tenors! I love that part too!

  • do you play tenor?

  • yes

  • as in percussion tenors or tenor saxophone?

  • saxaphone b/c tenor sax is the best

  • good job, but this lacks a rhythm section to tie it all together (guitar/piano, i think I heard a bass)

and lol for the added in non-solo solo

  • there is a bass part

  • I know there is a bass part

but you can't hear it in this performance

which leads me to think that there isn't one.

  • good on u guy playing flute. u dnt see many guys playing flute, i used to play and they dont get the respect they deserve. rock on guy flautists.

  • White kid with pink tie is a fucking faggot.

You're not cool or funny, oh yeah can you shove you finger higher?

  • flutes = fail.

  • We have about 50 flutes in a marching band with 250 people and you cant even hear them

  • wow can i say low brass....epic fail on tuning....

  • agree

  • Newsome High School Jazz Band plays it way better. Once we have a concert ill post it. They dont look very old in this video, so for your age its good. The beginning was a little out of tune, but...

  • Horrible arrangement. Blah.

  • check out mms jazz band plays birdland. the trumpet solo is messed up but other than that it is a really good middle school version of birdland

  • I would really like to know why there are flutes in a jazz band...

  • me too... flutes are NOT in jazz band!!!!!

  • @mshoed Flutes have been a major part of jazz.

  • @lmordro ha never r u high?

  • @TheDude7225 Nope, not high. They are at least a part of Jazz. I've heard them in jazz a few times.

  • @lmordro eh

  • bass line is so good in this!! and the drums r awesome and the saxes and trumpets u guys r all good especially the bari i heard alot of very nice u guys i love this song i can tell u guys did too and good solos!!!!!!!!!

  • for a jr high band this is spot on

    MF would be proud

committing it to memory instead of sight reading would help loosen things up, though...

  • well this was pretty good.

we're playing birdland this year at my Jr. High and play the actual weather report version. I agree pretty much agree with everyone about the whole soul thing. And i'm a trumpet guy so i know that your horn is a "directional weapon". Keep it parallel. and most of that really should have been an octave higher to give the "wow!" kinda factor. other than that decent job

  • However, nice performance for your age group.

Keep it up and add some feeling, you will be fine.

  • Very "beginer" sound.

And there is no emotion. C'mon guys, have fun with this piece. Saxes, this is a tribute to Bird, one of the greatest sax players ever!

  • I don't find your bass is strong enough.. Then again, I'm a bass clarinetist and I love to be heard.. I loved playing this song, and I hope you guys did too!

  • This is my marching band's opener for halftime and we play it soooo much faster

  • This song needs some feel. Don't just go threw the motion, out some heart in it. Work on intination and a richer band sound, the saxophones overpowered most of the band.

  • OMW your so dead. ITS so easy just to press notes but it doesnt look like your enjoying it and the sound could be more enthusiastic. DONT JUST STAND THERE!!!!!

  • That was a good job you guys. Other than dynamics and some style that was a great performance, but that is to be expected out of a group in the age range demonstrated. Ya'll did better than the avg and you should be proud.

  • You just should try some dynamics, and the song is justt 100 times better ;)

But nice1 - we´re just playing it with our bigband to welcome our new headmaster - but we have the 'easy' Holmes-arrangement. So just trumpets and drums are messing around, they´re too loud -.-" So our nice new singer cannot be heard - I hope I can get a film of this song -it is very nice - i like it a lot^^

  • u gotta feel it. That song has to have some BAM! Its gotta be funky. Give it some life. You can play all the notes and rythyms perfectly and get a 2. It sounds like yall have it in you just let it out.

  • in every band the trumpets seem to suck. i play berry sax.

  • We played this song in jazz band... AND TENOR SAXOPHONES RULE! YEAH! but owch... your trumpet messed up. Alot like ours XD

  • The solo is played exactly as writen... O.o and no one has any expression, and... well... yeah

  • dude... thsi bands dead. i felt no energy. i know u guys arent pros and cant do things like walk around the stage, but have more presense other than press ur keys and stare at the stand.....

  • THEY'RE JUST KIDS!! give them a break, sounds pretty good when you take into account you're age, keep it up!

  • we played this song for marching band last year.

  • tune that trombone up in the beginning

    ouchhh

  • my full concert band played this song..... wWHERE ARE THE FRIEKEN CLARINETS?!?!?!?!?

  • its meant for jazz

  • we're playing this song in jazz band :)

  • that was a really awesome song. the bari just needs to playy man playyyyyy lol it has the coolest part just about

  • in the falls at about 2 the trumpet should be tongued more and sharper, the whole thing could do with a bit more sharpening, but other than that great tune and well played i loved the counter harmonies between tenor saxes and the rest of the band

  • measure 42 is the trumpet && alto sax soli right????

  • my band plays this, when played with strong players its sounds really good, even though i like this loved the tenor solo :)

  • I didn't like it.. check mine out tommorow on youtube. It was a bit better arranged. It was very excellent but I just didnt like the general sound.

  • hrm.....i play the drums for this song, and I play totally different, and I sound a whole lot better.

  • as do I, not the best performance ever!

  • ya they played the peice exactly as written, then need to add some stuff into their solos to make it more characteristic

  • ...I'm sorry, but this is an awful arrangement. Needs more..... everything.

  • hey man its for a middle school band, ya its not good, but good for middle school jazz band. Ya birdland has more stuff but still dude its made for middle school players

  • come on trumpets i wanna hear you!!!!!

  • lol, ya its a pretty good one, but ya more trumpet is needed.

  • well i cant hear much, the solos were written, the shout section... well was more of a whisper

  • One word... BORING! No offence, but no expression no change in dynamics, the players were jsut staying in the same spot how boring :S

  • no feeling at all.....so boring

  • something is wrong about this. Oh yea, it's just boring. You guys played it fine, it's just that you guys were standing still and playing mezo piano like the whole time.

  • great bottom sounds but needs more top with trumpets. no offense but no flutes in a jazz band....ever! great sound for a younger group though.

  • play the high school arrangement like our middle school

  • every jazz school jazz band should be this:

    5 saxes

    4 trombones

    1bass trombone

    5 trumpets

    bass

    guitar

    drum kit

    auxilary percussion

no more no less. saxes should double on flute and clarinet.

  • I usually see 4 trombones (one of which is Bass) and often a piano depending on the chart.

  • AAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH

I forgot piano, thats one of the most important ones. I meant to put piano in there.

  • Hey...Is This a Jazz Band??? lol not sure...anyway ok job I CANT HEAR THE TRUMPETS thats the main thing in a succesful jazz band next to a rythem section....my Middle School jazz band plays this... and i play 1st Trumpet *scream Trumet*

  • They're playing directly into their stands... that's why you can't hear them. They need to play properly.

  • at measure 21..

where it has the quarter note and then the 8th notes they played it wrong..

the 8th notes were too long

  • cant even hear trumpets

  • Not too bad for a bunch of 7th and 8th graders. Could've played with more confidence though; some of the big moments were pretty lacking. Also, altos play with the sax between your legs. Much more comfortable and you'll start anyway when you get to high school. Not too shabby all in all.

  • sounds pretty good! im playing this too! i play f horn ... trumpets could use a little work though.. great job!

  • the trumpets suck

  • It's junior high kids, the trumpets always suck. Trust me.

  • i go to pleasand hill middle in CA, and i improvise on drums to this song. A LOT... it was kinda weird hearing them

  • We are playing this in Jazz band. I play the Bari Sax my two friends play Tenors and my other friend plays Alto. He is first chair. We are going to do a cuartet this year and we are going to be sweet. I might try to get a video of us on YouTube.

  • Im in 7th grade jazz band, and were playing this and we ROCK!!

  • If you think you're good now, wait until you get to high school and hear your seniors play. You'll be humbled.

  • Try not to rush the quarter notes in measures I think 13-29. I'm not 100% on the measure numbers but other than that great job. Awesome solos guys. All around good job.

  • why does that alto player keep standing up

  • idiot hes soloing

  • thats not a solo its the chorus

  • thats the chorus not a solo

  • yea we did this for high school and all and its easy and fun! :D but also it was marching band so it was trumpets playing beggning not alto saxophones by the way THEY RULE! :D i play taht instrument and yea its cool and fun nice job! :D Go Millard South :P lol

  • yeah I'm playing this for High School Jazz Band and its awesome!!! I love this song. We're also playing stuff like Pink Panther Theme and stuff like that!!! But this video was really great. Awesome Job!!!

  • actually yes. I am in 7th grade and at our concert, no trumpet missed a pitch and everything was online

  • At mesure i think 32, the counting for the Barri Sax, trombone were wrong. it was way off. And this song is completly out of tune. About 7 or 8 mistakes.

  • Get a grip!, there a college band! there not playing to thousands of people, and obviously you were pitch perfect and could count in demi-semi quavers the very first time you played...?

  • nice job!

    where was this filmed?

  • out of tune, but I love this arrangement for a beginner jazz ensemble. <3

  • amazing! wow!

  • we played this in our field show my freshman year!!!! u guys sound better though....partially because we had a really small marching band that year...

  • GREAT JOB!!! As a music teacher and jazz tenor player, it always excites me to hear kids play jazz. You never know...the next Michael Brecker could be in that band!

  • I love this song we played it when we went to the elementry schools and the 5th ad 6th grade center's. I loved my part I doubble on Tenor Sax for jazz band *Bassoon in concert band* and its nice to have an exciting part once in a while.

  • im just curious is that trumpet player spencer amer cause he looks like him.

  • nope

  • On your jazz band, ya'll ever had a tuba or French horn(s) around that time?

  • no we havea ufonium though

  • You meant "euphonium" by the way?

  • yes thnx for the correction

  • pretty good, except for the trumpets. This song is supposed to be brassy. I could not really hear the trumpets. It was ok, but you should never do this again, unless you get a good trumpet player. This song doesnt work unless you have a trumpet player that can play high. But for this age group, it was good.

  • The arrangement was like that so trumpets don't have to play high. Maybe you're just familiar with maynard ferguson's version?

  • Wow we only have 4 trumpits I tenor a bass a gutar Drum set a tamberine because the piano part has bee missing for about 10 years 1 trombone 2 altos and a berri. Out of that ony the bass, gutar, 1 alto, 1 trumpit trombone and tenor made it to highschool. And you guys are alot better it was enjoable to lissen to.

  • thnx for the comment

  • Is that A viloin? And were playing this how long have there been Flute and Charinet parts? What are all the instriments in your ensemble?

  • we got 2 violins. We have a drummer piano electric piano a guitar an electric bass 5 trumpets alto saxes tenor saxes cello clarniet flute basss clarinet trombone

  • Dude i'm in middle school and its beginner and you can play this?

  • hey it sounds pretty good, nice solos there. i played this song last year when i was in middle school it's fun to play

  • thnx

  • Man your brass line they're playing into their stands! tell them to get their arms up, other then that, it's ok My middle school plays it better then you guys but we have an amazing director

  • their intonation is better than the high school jazz group that im in, they must have a good conductor

  • mayb hahaha

  • why no bass? the simplicity of the arrangement makes it very noticeable that it's an elementary school. but a very very good performance considering.

  • there is an electric bass and 2 acoustic bass. also you can't hear because it wasnt turned up as high as it was supposed to. Also, in that arrangement the guitar was the main not the bass. And its not an elementary school its a middle school few middle school bands can get as good as our band. thanks for your comment!
