some of you people have the manners of a bastard billy goat. Otherwise you simply couldn't get laid in a monkey whore house with a fist full of fruit.
Wonderful lessons. Thanks. BUT, from a NON-drum corps rudimental player...
it doesn't make any musical sense to have a backstick play the flam grace note. It's not logical. By its very nature, the backstroke would be more effective as a heavier stroke.
definately heloed my technique alot with backsticking
by any chance does any one know what the name of the backsticking thing in the left hand where you use your fingers to push the stick and hit the drum?
great video. keep in mind beginers, this is really fun, but make sure u keep practicing the basics. dont focus so much on stick tricks that you loose focus on the basics. have fun with it!
when i do my left back stick from trad i flip the stick into matched instead of keeping my traditional fulcrum when i flip. instead i change to matched grip. i think it helps keep sound consistant and feels more natural.
The last visual where you spin the left stick all the way around is called a "hi mom" due to the people who did it in the early 80's (BD with Sco Jo) actually said Hi mom during the visual, it's also used for drum to drum stuff.
Wait did you say "If you really knew what a snare drum or drum-line (is)." Um. Yeah. I know how to play snare drum. And I know what a drum line is. But to say that to only "really" know how to play snare drum is by back-sticking, then you sir are wrong. Back-sticking is a modern technique. But snare drumming isn't modern, is it. First off, seek a real ancient fife and drum corps drummer and ask him about back-sticking and how important it is to drumming. I don't think he'll agree with you.
i dont know entirely.. but they look like thomas lang sticks..made by vic firth.they are massive, but soo nice to play with if you like the weight in the stick. like i say im not sure, but i know they are simular if thats any help
and seriously great vid dude, really well explained.. a lot of time aand effort,
if it wanst 1:10 in the morning i would give it ago..
hey man thanks for posting this. you're a great drummer with great tricks. thanks for the elbow advice at around 4min 10s. Solved a lotta things for me.
You do a great job. Thank You. My only negative is that you are playing sitting down. I posted a similar comment on your Pantera vid, and I am not trying to be a nuisance, but you marched, so you know. I am just concerned that young players are not marking time when they practice. You can see it on their youtube vids and the problems it causes. Can you address this? If you have, and I missed it, Then I apologize.
hey i noticed that when your explaining left hand traditional backsticking in the beginning of the video, you say to leave your ring finger and pinky under that stick as if you were playing normally. But I noticed that when you played left hand backsticking later, you pulled those 2 fingers and placed them on top of the stick.
Great observation! I guess when I am playing the faster passages I will keep my ring and pinky fingers under the stick because there is not enough time to change grip. In a couple of instances where I was demonstrating a left back stick in isolation, I switched to a true matched grip because it just feels awkward to keep the fingers underneath the stick in that situation.
Yeah, I know what you mean. I'm not all that great at backsticking, so I don't usually play backsticks very fast, which results in me having time to move the ring and pinky on top.
I have received other comments from people about thumb position on the left hand. I find that it is easiest on the fast passages to keep the thumb where it is while others like to move the thumb to the side of the stick. It has been interesting for me to learn about the differences in backsticking techniques! I am only offering one version of the technique and I am not claiming that it is the correct ONE.
Dude ur so ga playing those sweet ass shirley murphys with backsticking that fast. I gotta get my threes up to a good speed, you should make a video for those on how to get them faster.
some of you people have the manners of a bastard billy goat. Otherwise you simply couldn't get laid in a monkey whore house with a fist full of fruit.

No but to continue on snare into the college or corps levels, you'll need to develope the traditional grip. Practice Practice Practice.
