Michael was F-ed!The team let him practice 12 laps total for most races, and the engine was shit!He said in Racer magazine, that some tracks he didn't even know until he got there! And during qualifying he would say I believe a left is coming up!
@Bodebodango : That was not up to the team, those were the regulations in F1. Teams were given 23 laps of practice and 12 laps to qualify each day. You have to manage that very carefully and yes, it is very difficult to learn in those conditions. I do not recall the amount of testing allowed at the time. There were many factors, but Michael choosing to live in the US did contribute to his troubles, as other have already stated.
In Michael's defense, The McLaren in 1993 sucked and the Ford engine wasn't the best...Senna said himself...if Senna wasn't in the McLaren, the team would have went winless that year
Senna still won five races that year, and Hakkinen was very quick, actually out-qualifying Senna at Australia. The McLaren was arguably tied as the second best car on the grid with Benetton. Hardly a car that "sucked".
Andretti ruined his own chances in F1. He refused to move to Britain, only commuting to events on race weekends. He rarely showed for testing. Andretti lacked the level of commitment required to succeed in F1, and it showed in his performances, or lack thereof.
@Treetop64 - I didn't realise that about Michael Andretti. From what you have said about him, it seems like his heart wasn't in Formula One. He certainly had ability, no doubt about that.
@Treetop64 Not true. You need to hear what Marrio said about the whole mess. Michael was screwed from the fist moment he signed the contract. Ron Dennis didn't even like Michael and was not empressed by his driving. He only did the deal as a favor to Marrio because he was a former champion. Ron Dennis is and was an ASS!
I read about what Mario and Marco said. Understandably, both were sticking up for their son/dad.
Ron Dennis didn't become successful managing an F1 team that won multiple championships over many years, and the successful businessman he is today, by being petty, as you suggest. Moreover - not only Ron Dennis - but nobody(!) was impressed by Michael's driving, quite frankly, and it's hard to appreciate someone on the team who only bothers to show up on race weekends.
They both had drivability issues with the car, as did Hakkinen. Technical gremlins hampered all three throughout the season. One example: Senna still won at Donington even with a malfunctioning active suspension, while Andretti spun during qualifying and crashed out on the first lap of the race. Senna and Hakkinen had great results with McLaren while Andretti did not. Andretti got more notoriety from his driving mishaps than anything else. He lacked commitment in F1 and it showed.
@Regret696 Don´t think so. Yes, Murray and by this time Jonathan Palmer were really good, and than Martin Brundle, but I think that Bob Varsha here in company of eighter Derek Bell or Derek Daly (who always was bussy racing during the Italian GP´s) could match them. i think they were the only US ( certainly only Varsha and Hobbs) who had a clue about F1
Andretti was the worst big name failure F1 ever seen.... claiming he didnt know the circuits disguises the fact he crashed too much in the 2nd best car available (only 7 points)...probably shoulda done some research on who his teammate was gonna be before he signed...
Andretti caused some of his problems. He wanted to commute from the USA for every race, so would almost never test the car. Plus, Active Suspension was something he was not used to (amongst a few other things the car had), and his lack of testing made it worse.
If he had moved to Europe and really gave it a good crack at it, he would have done very well. He had the talent. He would qualify in the top 10 with almost no track knowledge and little practice. Imagine if he took it seriously!
Michael Andretti failed in F1 because he never took it seriously. It was almost like he didn't want to race there but since it was the pinnacle of openwheel racing he forced himself to try it.
His half hearted effort was also hampered by an extreme lack of testing, technical gremilins that plagued the McLarens and a team that stopped supporting him because of his half hearted effort.
He should have stayed in Indycar racing, something he liked and felt at home with
I certainly believe he didn't have "enough" testing but, how could that happen? I can't remember hearing such excuses from a top team' driver in the last 10 years. What was the real cause for that extreme lack of testing?
Michael Andretti said about Senna: he is a first class man (always defending him during McLaren meetings when he was criticized).

@Treetop64 Senna won a pole in Australia so how was it possible that he was outqualified by Hakkinen?

In Juan Montoya's rookie season he had trouble out qualifying Ralf Schumacher, crashed several times and only finished 6 races
Michael Andretti had Ayrton Senna as a teammate. Thats a notch above Ralf Schumacher I would say.
Michael Andretti even said he was still learning tracks in the middle of a race. He had virtually no testing, and pra

Not true. In 1993 F1 put testing restrictions on the teams for the first time, so Michael had little to no seat time.
