In the day's other key race, Said Aouita of Morocco defeated Joaquim Cruz of Brazil, the 1984 Olympic gold-medal winner, in the 800 meters. Aouita finished in 1:43.86, the best he has ever run the distance, but later he called the race ''tactical.''

Aouita said afterward that he would run both the 800 and 1,500 meters at Seoul ''if I stay in this shape.'' He is the world-record holder in the 1,500 at 3:29.46 and has not lost a race at that distance since 1985.
