Excellent recording - I saw this tour in Boulder, CO. Jerry's solo on Celestial Terrestrial Commuters made me pee my pants. Even Steve missed a bar with his jaw dropped.
Got to see the Dregs several times back in the day and every time they sounded great. Have to agree w/ the comment tho that the sound on these YT videos aint great but at least it's better then nothing. You get the idea that what they were doing was nothing short of remarkable. They gotta be where the phrase "off the hook" came from.
The Dregs are possibly the best 5 musicians ever assembled. I have every CD they ever produced. I am a musician so know. Listen to Assembly Line and Kat Food 10 times then tell me I am wrong. Am still listening to their CDs 20 years later. Saw them live in SD. Steve, bring back the Dregs.FYI Mahavishnu was 10 years before the Dregs.
there is a difference between being a big fan of a band and thinking they are the best in their field. Dream Theater is an awesome band, "IN MY OPINION" they sound a little to much like -math rock-. The dregs do so much with their music without a vocalist!!!! So no, I don't think Dream Theater can "outplay" the Dregs. I am not going to argue that they have great chops, but the Dregs have chops and are more musical. "IN MY OPINION".....David
I don't give a shit about what people say about Steve Vai,to me ,Morse is better, not that anyone could compare musician of this caliper (elite),but I take another thing into factor, that really isn't a qualification.Steve Morse is one of the humblest, kind hearted, all around Mr. Nice guy in the business.Vai seems to me like he is in love with himself. I might be wrong about that but I don't think I am.I like Morses guitar style, and music better as well.I also appreciate Vai as well,but........
Seems like Mike Brecker over again. Fucked me up for weeks... Now T. Had phrasing down to an art , as much as mays, but not recognized as much as Lyle Mays.
Dixie Dregs ... Great band...great artists/players all. BUTTT...the guy yielding the camera switching equipment in this vid should get the crap slapped out of him. I swear the guy doesn't know crap about WHO do shoot at WHAT time and for how long. Did they hire Mr. BEAN to do the camera switching/editing AND get him drunk??? Jeeeeeeez.
@Stratslayer You're right. Like at 1.:30 where he focuses in on Goodman while Morgenstein is the focus. Then he cuts to Morgenstein and stays there just as he's wrapping and Larue is kicking. He kicks over to Larue about halfway through. Etc. Funny.
LMAO!!! 1:41 - 1:53 .. Dave LaRue is ridiculous!! Just one of those solos where all you can do is shake your head and laugh! It took me months to work out Andy West's solo from the studio recording....Dave just whips that out - and makes it look easy. One of the greatest bassists that nobody has heard of.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
well yeah but... electronics versus acoustic, BIG difference. Steve Morse is a fine player when he's riding a humbucker and a heavy distortion rig. What he aint, is Leo Kottke, Adrian Legg, etc. Just about anybody can wang dang doodle on a bucker/mud rig.
You should probably check out his acoustic playing before making such stupid comments. Guess his classical training and the fact the he can flat pick bluegrass with the best of them gets lost on you. Hey while your at it if you can play electric like him please let us know where we can see your vids.
@dhardinger1 He's awesome; saw him with Steve Morse Band and Dregs. But on this song he is playing Andy West's chops. He is also very good. No disrespect intended.
Great performance, but speaking as a professional director, I hope it wasn't you who cut this.... I almost broke my finger hitting non-existent camera previews watching this. I was like "Go! Go!...."
This may be one of the best Morse vids I've seen. THANK YOU!!!!! Contrary to alot of "original" Dregs fans (and I am too, having discovered them in '77, and having bought ever release since), I believe this album to be the highest virtuoso achievement and finest songwriting of any original DD album (prior to their breakup, and the formation of Steve Morse Band). Regardless of the fact that Morse was very frustrated with the Dreg's success, this album, and this song among several was PHENOMINAL!
"Assembly Line" was my introduction to fusion, rock instrumental. Industry Standard is the album, which also features Steve's brilliant duet with Steve Howe, "Up in the Air."
Jeez Morse, think you got enough delay happenin' there @ 2:07 !!!!!

Dream Theatre & The Dregs? Just an "apples & oranges" comparison. John Petrucci names Steve Morse as his idol & single biggest influence.

Does anyone on this blog actually believe Dream Theatre can outplay the Dregs?
