@bennissimov seriously though, this song doesn't show her skill, nor her band's sound very well in my opinion. And she doesn't proclaim to be a good guitarist, or a good singer. It's just original music with a different sound. And it sounds good. I think people should start to realize that sounding good is more important than having skill. think about that.
@TheTylrBllmn i'm saying it doesn't sound good, or show a great amount of skill. hence the term "songwriters". let me have my opinion or block the comments dude, i don't feel like having a philosophical discussion with you about my taste in music
@RocketShipX41 It's "interesting" in the sense that nobody's combined those particular elements (singing and tapping in a naive pop-rock style) before but it's not interesting in any objective musical sense. If her whole presentation was a little less sloppy and unintentionally noisy (due to being sloppy, not that she's aping Thurston Moore), she'd be easier to respect as a pop artist. Just don't confuse the sloppy noise for anything like an attempt to be "arty." She's better off without it.
You can like this stuff as pop music. But please don't pretend she's doing anything interesting on the guitar. She taps like a 14-year-old trying to sound like Eddie Van Halen. The chorus is admittedly nice, but it's all modal and the general effect is more like a folk fiddler than a guitarist. Which, again, is sort of nice in a poppy way. But woe betide the world when we expect so little of our (guitar) gods 'n' goddesses.
@Snardbafulator I would disagree that what she does on the guitar is not interesting. While lots of players use tapping techniques, I have never heard anyone base their whole songs' chording on it like she does. There are a few math-rock bands that do this kind of stuff, but none of them put it behind singing. And I'm no Van Halen expert, but her tapping doesn't remind me at all of his stuff. I wouldn't elevate her to divinity, but this is a sound I've never heard anyone else do.
@RocketShipX41 She'd actually have to have chops to sound like Eddie Van Halen. I said she sounds like a teenager *trying to sound* like Van Halen -- meaning she doesn't have much of a clue of what she's doing -- which is borne out if you watch her fingers. Her chording isn't based on those arpeggios and scale figures -- her chording is dead-basic diatonic rock 'n' roll (note she always has another guitarist live to fill in those gaps) . And math rock, pffft -- show me a single odd time sig.
@Snardbafulator many odd time signatures on all three albums, often shifting between 5 and 4, some here and there, some arpeggios that have 7 equal length notes in one bar, and interesting polyrhtythms and implied polyrhythms against Zachs drums. The drum guitar interplay is worth the price of admission. Van Halen has chops,m but what good is that when his music is so dull, opredictable, posed, and overblown? Blech. Give me a pioneering spirit over chops any day. .
@denverexec2000 Totally agreed about Van Halen; but I don't see any "pioneering spirit" here. Maybe because I'm a prog guy and not all so-called math rock impresses me; I think Faraquet are brilliant but the whole Chicago/Midwest scene starting with Don Cab strikes me as pretty incredibly overrated when there are bands like Ruins in the world -- and Hella I'd just call Ritalin rock. Show me one passage in 5/4 in a Marnie Stern tune and I'll eat my words and shut up. Not askin' for very much..
Things You Notice has a 5/4 main riff. Plato's Fucked Up Cave off her debut has one at 2:24. Gimme at 1:53. Crippled Jazzer's outro has a 5/4 bit, sort of. it's really 5/4 + 5/4 + 4/4 + 4/4. her music's littered with strange rhythms; they're not difficult to find. they might be difficult to actually put a number to, especially given their frequent changes, but therein lies its awesomeness.
@bentantilles Okay, point taken. She does 5/4 in a couple places; I'll take your word for it. I dunno if they'd be actually that difficult to "put a number to" since she's not genuflecting to, you know, flextime avant-garde.
I've said my piece here. Some people really like Marnie Stern and think her music is innovative; I don't.
As Les Claypool (who I adore but also think is kind of overrated) always sez: "It's just a matter of opinion!"
i am so thrown off by her music. i can just see her going out on a date with someone bein like "yeah im in a band, its pretty cool u should check it out!" then he gets home and checks out her music, and is just like.. "WHAT..... THE FRAK"
i get a kick looking at idiot comments about "technique" on these Marnie vids, and always by some sawed-off, asswipe metal head. The denizens of TRUE technique. Piss off clowns. At least Stren, has an identifiable style, that actually stands out from the majority of beer belch bloozers. It's refreshing, to know there is someone out there who has an original idea. I'm going to go watch some old SWANS stuff, now. Another "original" band.
Even if her guitar playing is not the end all, she composes interesting music and has a pretty good singing voice. Her vocals kind of remind me of Azalia Snail (90's lo-fi).
BTW I saw the last Swans show ever in Altanta in '97. Miss them quite a bit.
As a metal head myself, I have to agree that most metal dudes are not mental giants by any stretch of the imagination.

And finger tapping is one of the easiest guitar techniques to learn since it's pioneering by Eddie Van Halen. I perfected 6 finger tapping after 6 months of guitar.
ha ha. I have no doubt in my mind that Marnie Stern is a better guitar player than you and everyone you know. Her style might not be something that you are used to so sorry if that scares you. Lots of people get it and are into it. Your loss really.
And I have been playing guitar for 5 years and finger tapping in that style is definitely not the easiest technique. No idea what you are on about...
Then you're playing guitar wrong. Open string tapping is entirely too easy.
And seeing as how I am in contact with such bands as Ill Scarlett and Protest The Hero (I live in the town beside Protest) and am on contact-terms with Don Ross (Lives in my town, friends go to him for guitar lessons) and seeing as how old black musicians call me a 'blues man' I think I may have a little more on Marnie's generic pop-tapping music.
Well la-di-dah I am in close contact with people in bands too. If you think her songs are so simple I'd like to see you post a cover on here. Seriously though dude I don't care how good you think you are at guitar or who you know. Marnie is a talented guitar player with a very unique song writing style that I think is great and I'm not alone here. If you can't see that then I think it's your loss.
Holy crap! I kept reading about her and had little interest in hearing another shredder. She is way more than that. She IS. I'm in love. I hope I don't scare her.
I love it! Different sound...she is very interesting. Gonna be watching for her stuff!
