Great coaching by a truly great man, huge loss to cricket and to the world when he left us in 2007. I read somewhere that when he first started coaching in South Africa during apartheid and the ensuing guerrilla war he used to coach kids of all races and colors and for those who lived in bad neighborhoods he would drive them back to their houses. Truly a great man..
Great coaching from one of the most elegant batsman of his time, who played the West Indian quickies as well as anyone -beautiful cover-driver of the ball, never seen better
I have a different approach against left-arm pace bowlers and left arm spinners/ leg spinners. (I am a right-hander, by the way)
I begin with a side-on stance and as the ball is delivered, I shuffle and open up slightly. That enables me to play better on the off-side without blinding my view as a side-on stance sometimes does.
Not sure if many other players follow that, but I've seen Damien Martyn and Craig McMillan adopting this method on occasions.
thats really cool mate.. i used to do the same too (I still do) but the problem i face is that on deliveries that come into me from off stump really cause problems... and if the ball reverse swings, u ca easily loose middle or leg stump.... well atleast I do :)
@Imrankniazi also, by opening yourself up it may seem like you can play better through the offside but it comes at a higher risk. The risk is that your hands get to far infront of your body so if the ball spins or stays straight your stumps are uncovered.
@MitchellVanners That's not always true. By shuffling across, one ensures that the pads become the second line of defense and for a delivery spinning from outside leg stump, you negate the LBW.
I agree that it kind of improves your off-side play at a certain premium. This technique deesn't work for all cases. You'd ideally do it to an out-of-the-rough left arm spinner or a huge leg spinner like MacGill. Also good against bowlers like Mitch Johnson who mostly take the ball away.
Yeah these are good videos and in loads of ways they're presented well but **** what a dreary bloke, with his posh 1950's middle England BBC accent, couldn't they have got someone a bit more "Geezer" with a sense of humour - an Aussie or someone, anyone else that would enable you to watch this all the way through without having the feeling that killing yourself would be better than sitting through the full 10 minutes for each section. God he's dreary!

he said he comes back and across!! against wasim and waqar. which brings his pads in front of wicket!!!
but first he was sayin that his stance was such that it can reduce!!!! LBW danger as his pads were lit bat away frm leg stump!!!!!

i'm right handed
for any right-arm bowler bowling around the wicket, or any left-arm bowlers bowling over the wicket, i open my stance

simon katich has a drastic change in stance as the ball is delivered.. seems to work quite well for him. these videos are great btw
