  • Re: my previous comment, I'm guessing you land facing uphill for bs 180 so you don't over-rotate. Ie. your head does a 180 spin and so should your board. For a fs 360 I imagine your head must spin the whole 360 and you land looking downhill again, otherwise your board won't finish the 360?

  • So wait, you land a bs 180 looking back up the hill? Is this the same with any jump landing blind? Eg. a fs 360?

  • i have that same burton hat!

  • i just mastered my frontside 90s to faceplant

  • can anyone give me the link to custom snowboards? when i search for it all the comes up is customizing your own snowboard..

  • @Flamerthrower Hey bro its the burton custom.

  • I don't see what the difference between front and backside 180 is? Can you please explain?

  • @seansopha1 - As shown in the video, Frontside is when your frontside rotates into the first 90 degrees of the spin and the opposite for backside.

  • @seansopha1 for backside, when you have spun 90 degrees, you will be facing backwards (your back is pointed down the mountain, the front facing the jump).

frontside, at 90 degrees your back is pointed towards the jump and your front is facing down the mountain

  • What do you mean popping off heels and toes?? Can anyone explain to me? im from Finland :P

  • @17Stickman - When you jump into the trick you come off one edge or the other, heel edge or toe edge. This is what is meant by popping off the heels or toes, pop off on edge of the board or the other.

  • what kind of camera do you guys use?

  • @LIVEtoFLY09 - Panasonic Handheld that shouts in 1080.

  • How long have you been snowboarding?

  • @turbokotlett - 17+ years

  • do you have a video where it teachs you just the jump, like i can do an 180 but i want to learn to get more air of small jumps

  • @LlamaKing123456789 - Check out our Basic Air Video to learn the basics of jumping

  • 2 snowboards xD

  • I pretty much have black diamonds sown now, so I want to start into learning some freestyle riding. I dont really know anyone good or motivational with snowboarding so I'm not sure on what/how to start some jumps and grinds. I tend to hesitate with natural humps and fall backwards or lose balance when I'm not even popping. Any advice on how to start with freestyle?

  • @Matt7wb - Check out all our Trick Tip videos and I am happy to help give you some motivation.

  • Let me just put this out there for everyone. If you have never tried any of this before... IT IS NOT GOING TO BE SUPER EASY its going to take practise but this is still very helpfull.

  • Nice vid

Posted on my moms bday an I think I'm going to try this I'm an intermediate but I can do 180s and junk not in the terrain park any1 think I can do this on a jump

  • @kriekproductions - Thanks

  • my snowboard friends all say to pop off your heels when frontside but it says to pop off your toes here so idk what to do. any answers?

  • @Hatsie98 - As it says in the video: you can pop off both your heals and your toes for front side 180s.

Start with heal side FS 180s.

  • @sierrasnowboard you mean heel ^^

  • my problem is when i do a 180 i tend to lean heavy backwards any tips?

  • @SWATXXXHEADSHOT1 - Work on your stance on the in run and takeoff of your jumps. Most likely your front leg is straighter than your back leg, which shifts your weight back towards the tail.

  • Nice vid, I had a lot of trouble with backside 180s but there a lot better now. Thnx!

  • What type of snowboard is that? Freestyle?

  • @MStyl3zBlackOps - Custom V-Rocker All Mountain Freestyle

  • expert village is your bitch :)

  • Compared to the other vids, this is so much better structured which makes it easier to learn. nice one

  • Damn, that's one Fagel who can ride!

    Nice vids, bro.

  • @jamil7benton - Thanks!

  • thanks so much for posting these vids, so much help!

  • nice vid man, i'm startin to teach my little bro to ride in the park and was havin trouble teacin him fs/bs 180's. this will definatly help out for tomorrow!

  • today was just awesome!!! Made my first backside, and then another three in a row, no problem. The pleasure & filling is just the best and i can still feel it... strangely fronsides seem more difficult for me. everytime I jump, I land on my bottom. :) ...i probably need to lean(more) forward.

Thanks for the tips. i'll use them tomorow! :D

  • his last name is fagle :D

also good tips, hoping to get my back 1s dialed this year

  • @MennoSkate - It is Fagel.

Glad you liked the tips. - Doug

  • doing a fs 180 u have a blind landing, backside you can see wear your landing. If you try to look behind u while doing a fs 180 while landing in can cause u to continue ur rotation and make u catch an edge. so doing a fs 180 ur suppose to look behind u after u have landed.

  • @TwinzFury - You have it mixed up BS 180's have a blind landing.

  • @sierrasnowboard well it isnt really blind at all doing 180's more when doing 360's or more.

  • @sierrasnowboard it all depends on if you are goofy or reg. Im reg and when i throw out a front side i got a blind landing but when i throw out a back side i can see the landing. But i normally do Fron side cuz it looks better, haha and im more comfortable.

    I think im right?

  • @TranceLord100 - It does not matter if your are regular or goofy. The Backside 180 your back is facing the landing zone for the majority of the time in the air. This is called a blind trick. The Frontside 180 your chest is open to the landing zone for the time in the air, so it is not a blind landing.

The video breaks this down for you.

  • @sierrasnowboard ohh yeah. i got confused. sorry for that. I got it now. haha and great vid/vids :)

  • What does he mean off your toes or off your heels? like literally carve up sorta tword your toes? and then ollie?

  • @suprasandsex - You do not need to do a full ollie when coming off a jump. Yes, you come off one edge or the other. This is less apparent on Rocker Boards, but still a part of setting up the spin.

This type of 180 will also help train you for larger spins.

  • so ur saying i should pop off my toes for the fs and bs 180? and is this also for the 360, 540 etc?

  • @SimorgesTV - As explained in the video for FS you can pop off either toes or heals. This applies for all your larger spins. BS spins are almost always off your toes.

  • i aways lose my ballens can you help my with that >?

  • @SuperNaziable - Your balance, It is all about the approach and takeoff. Check out the Basic Air Video.

  • Just wondering, Does the rider in this video reply to the questions and comments?

  • @sledz4life - Yes I do - Doug

  • @sierrasnowboard Thanks :)

  • nice video

  • @Willhazzaburton - Thanks

  • @sierrasnowboard if im goofy the frontside in what way is?

  • @feryara118 - Clockwise, you spin with your upper body facing into the first 90 degrees of the spin.

  • Just landed my first 180 off a kicker about 3 days ago. Ended up getting a concussion because apparently I'm not to good at riding away switch haha. I have a Sierra product question for you though, Im really looking at buying one of the Sierra stunts. I am 190cm tall and weigh 85kg, along with a size 12.5US foot. Iv narrowed it down to either the 153Wide or the 159Wide, alternatively i could go 155/158 non wide, just dont think that would cover my foot size. What do you recommend? Cheers

  • @0zerg0 - If you are getting the board just for jibbing you could go with the 153wide.

But I would recommend you go with the 159wide for all aspects of riding and ever changing snow conditions.

  • @sierrasnowboard Thank you for your prompt reply =)

  • @0zerg0 - Of course, always stoked to help out.

  • I really like the logo in the end (;

  • good video

  • @photoshopexperts - Thanks

  • good video, does it make a difference if you're landing on your toes or heel? my friend told me ride away on my heel, yet i always see people landing on toe edge

  • @Shaantiify - Try jumping up in the air and landing on you your heels. It usually does not feel very good. I recommend people to land as flat as possible and then roll up to the needed edge if necessary to stop any excess rotation.

  • So for these 180s, should the rotation start from my hips or should my shoulders and head turn first?

Btw these vids are awesome thanks!

  • @ugotpimped415 - Anticipate from the shoulders slightly. When you come off the takeoff then tie in the hip.

The head and eyes will be dependent on whether rotating frontside or backside.

  • Hi Doug,

I tried doing the FS on small jumps. I can do a FS 180 popping off the heel. But, I can't seem to do it when I approach a jump with my snowboard flat. When I pop and rotate at the same time at the lip of the jump; the back of my snowboard just slip, and I can't get the vertical lift or rotation to complete the spin.

    Am I doing this wrong?

    thanks

  • i've been watchin all these how to vids and they've been helpin me out quite a bit! not to mention i ended up goin to your site and ordered some pants and a jacket! lol

i can do the bs 180 on small jumps...now i just gotta work on my 360.

thanks for the vids and 50% off sale! :D

  • Glad we could help stoke you out.

  • I don't get the meaning of :popping on your toes.

  • Popping off your toes, means extending your legs off the snow so that your board pushes away from the toe edge before going airborne.

  • Thanks Doug!

    What's the background music?

  • It is from Free Play Music, Alex & Billy - Instrumental 11

  • nice vid thanks gonna try this next weekend.

  • Let us know how it goes.

  • It does say in the video, but for BS Toes and for FS either.

  • thanks

  • for sure thats a great board

  • im lookin at gettin that board custom v rocker 154 would you recomend it?

  • Absolutely!!

  • Great video, cant wait for more beginner stlye park tricks to help me before I go on my trip:) Sierra is the best site around!

  • dude those r some badass goggles, wut brand and whered u get em? my goggles fog easy, like not when im going down a slope but wen theyre on my head.

  • They are the Dragon Mace goggles. I think I got them from a resort shop last year.

Do not leave your goggles on your forehead they fog because of your perspiration.

  • @sierrasnowboard ya ok gotcha. thanks and thanks for the tips. one more thing do u think its a good idea to practice on a trampoline? cuz it seems like good practice

  • For sure

  • @sierrasnowboard cool thnx alot for the vid!!

  • Of Course, stay tuned in for more tip videos coming out soon.

  • hey i have a question, and kinda wanna clear it up. A backside 180 or anything backside is when ur going off the jump toe sided?

And for frontsides when u go off on the heelside?

    thanks,

  • Frontside Rotations - Can be thrown from both the toes and the heals. I find the rockered boards are a bit more difficult to pop off the toes for frontside spins.

Backside Rotations - For the most part are always off the toes.

Even if you look at Shawn Whites backside 720 across the channel gap off the heals in the 2009 Winter X-Games the last part of the board the leaves the snow is the toe edge of the tail.

  • Thanks Doug and SS. Just bought more stuff from you yesterday, you guys are great.

These "Doug how to vids" are some of the best I've seen. Please keep it up.

Now if only Doug did private lessons, I could get this sh*t dialed in much faster..

  • Hit me up at the Burton Academy at Nortthstar.

    Doug

  • Hi Doug

PMed you about this on the Sierra site.

  • Great video, love the tips. However, I'm confused. On all other videos i've watched, they talk about being "square" at the lip/takeoff and how important it is to not perform your ollie off the lips on your heels/toes because it throws you off. Can you give a little more guidance on the initial takeoff and into the turn? Should I be focusing on a "square" ollie at the lip before I initiate the turns? Thanks!

  • Think about being square with the hips and knees to the board to keep your balanced centered.

When talking about a little setup for the rotation, which is anticipating the spin, this input is done by slightly rotating the upper body.

If you are trying to do a dynamic ollie of the lip of the jump you are going to make it much more complicated. Just extend the legs as the back foot is coming of the takeoff to get the same results of the ollie.

This way you can focus on your spin.

  • @sierrasnowboard

so you would really push off just ur back leg basically? (since the front foot only has air underneath)

  • You have resistance primarily only at the back leg, but if you think about just extending with the back leg you will set your self out of balance as you go airborne.

    Extend both legs.

  • Thanks! I can't wait to try it out.

I appreciate your prompt replys..which is rare to find with youtube instructional videos.

I hope theres a how to butter video in the works :)

  • Great video. I spent six hours saturday between A-Basin and Keystone doing Frontside and Switch Frontside 180's on some green runs. By the end of the day I had switch down perfectly and was getting the hang out of the goofy frontside. These two videos make it look so easy and clean. Really appreciate them. So many bad videos out there of "how to do" tricks that are worthless.

  • Glad we could help.

    Thanks for the support.

    Doug

  • nice vid! it would be nice to see it done off some small hips too since it is a beginner video.

  • When you hit a hip it is not exactly a 180.

It is usually either just over a 90 or just under a 270.

We will get a hip jump video up this winter.

    Thanks

  • Very good video!

But I have one question about frontside and backside.

Frontside is turning firts with the chest and backside is turning first with your back, isn´t it?

I don´t know it because I read about it in a magazine and now I´m confused because I read it.. ;)

    Hope, you can help me!

  • That is correct.

    Seeing is believing!!

  • dude best videos ever. sierra snowboard is the best ever.

  • Thanks for your support!

  • Comment removed

  • When freeriding, I find it easier to do a frontside 180 from my heels, and a backside 180 from my toes. Is it the same for large jumps?

  • This is how most people will through all their frontside (off Heals) and backside (off Toes) for even the larger spins.

It is nice to mix it up and play with the frontside off the toes.

  • Thanks, you're videos have really helped me with my confidence and, thus, my riding!

  • Great!!

  • Thank you!

    Next question ;D (Sorry!)

I´m also confused at the slides. Why is you´re sliding a frontside boardslide with the back in front?

And what´s the difference between boardslide, lipslide and bluntslide?

Sorry if my english isn´t correct but i´m 13 years old and from austria.

  • is it easy to pull out those tricks with option mirror 159 ? or is it too big and clumsy ? i am 1.87 and 79kg

  • For 180's you should be fine with just about any length of board.

  • what about 360s and 540s .. and other advanced tricks... i know that nicholas müller also rides 159 but the T6 he is using is a narrower board.. should i prefer 157 cm board ? is it gonna make any difference ?

  • It will make a little difference. It is important to think about the terrain you will be riding. For powder and backcountry go with the longer board. For groomers and most resort riding go with the 157.

  • isnt it easier to 180 with a shorter board

  • what length is that custom???

  • 154cm 2010 Custom V-Rocker

I weigh 175lbs and am 5'9" with size 8.5 boots

  • i found out the size shortly after this vid, but thanks anyway,

  • For Backside 180's it will be easier to launch with your dominant foot forward and land switch.

For Frontsides it can go either way.

Make sure you have your switch riding dialed before airing to switch.

  • hey when i do front 180s i tend to land on my tail more. how do i shift my weight to fix it?

and if i can back 180 every try and can do flat land back 360s do you think i can take 360s to jumps?

    nice vid dude

  • Thanks, The reason you are probably landing on your tail when setting down your FS 180s is you are aft at take off.

This most likely is do to your back leg being more flexed than your front leg. Center out your height by squaring up your hips with the board and flexing more with the front ankle.

Your BS 180s will be easy to come around off a jump. The landing is all visible. Make sure to be patient off the lip, not spinning too soon and use a touch more of the core to take the 180 to a 3.

  • Nice video!

Isn't it a backside 180 when your heel edge leaves the lip first?

  • Yes, for air tricks the rotation is labeled by the direction your body is facing at the first 90 degrees of rotation; hence Backside or Frontside.

For Rail and Box tricks it is labeled by the side of the feature you are approaching. If you are coming straight on then it is called the easier trick.

  • my board is way too big for me lol.... i am 5 ft 8 wrighing 130 pounds. and i got 159...

  • whats the trick at 2:15 - 2:18 ?

  • Backside 180 Method Air

  • Damn it's soo nice when you did this video and I can do back sides better then front sides lol

  • bs 180s and 360 are easy, same for fs 180 but fs 360 is a bitch to land

  • I feel like i have no strenght at all on me left foot when riding switch. I ride goofy btw

  • When riding switch try driving towards your left foot by extending the right leg. This can bring the extra power to your switch riding as you build your strength and abilities.

  • which mountain are you at? so much snow already

  • These videos where shot in the spring of 2009 at Mammoth, Squaw, & Northstar.

  • he starded wit a custom

    went to a un inc

and then used a lib tech banana

  • I used a 2010 Burton Custom V-Rocker 154cm with 2010 Purple Cartels and a 2009 Burton Un.Inc 157cm with 2009 Black CO2's when shooting this footage, that is all.

    No Banana in this video.

    Thanks for watching.

    - Doug

  • these are by far the best how to trick tips i have ever seen! keep it sierrasnowboard!

  • dude he has a Burton custom in the beginning and a different board in some of it.

  • So?

  • pretty useful and indroduced, unlike the other ones where they just tell you ok you jump and turn and that s it...i hate those

  • im the first view, gotta comment on that
