@rhcpfolies My pleasure. I was lucky to be there and for the band to be cool enough to let me shoot video of the show after our interview was over. They haven't made the same offer in regards to their current tour. ;-)
@Smxx777 I really think there are certain bands that should never get big. And I don't mean that in a negative way. Some bands can really connect with an audience when they play in clubs and small venues and that all gets lost in a big venue. My feeling about it is that getting big damaged the Peppers. The longer they were away from playing to an audience who were right in their faces, the more they seemed to stray from being able to play the kind of music that makes people move.
Yep. Mike Bagley interviewed Anthony upstairs above Club Detroit and during the interview Flea and John popped in. John shared his desire to sentence all non-smokers to the electric chair and Flea covered his desire to leave the band and start an accounting firm. ;-)
@0spazzy0yazzy0 I have it, but it's Mike's interview. I feel like it's kinda his to do with as he likes. This footage was just me screwing around after I'd shot the interview.
@RRJackson ooh i see :) thanks for replying, well if it is ever on youtube can you let me know if you ever remember this comment :P, i think its so cool that you were there and able to film them like this! i wasn't even born in 1989 so i find it all so intriguing :P!
@RRJackson Hey, first ofall I'd like to say thanks for the upload! But I also want to ask you, since you seemed to have known the band, if they lifted weights. I know its kind of random but its a recurring debate between me and my friends. We all agree that Anthony did but I'm the only one that thinks John and Flea did too! Could you please respond and put an end to this arguement? :)
@AwesomeVed I'd seen the Peppers live before, but that night was the first time I'd ever met them. Obviously they all did some kind of training. I have no idea if weights were involved, though.
BTW, the couple at 6:52 singing along to 'Knock Me Down' are Hope Nicholls from Fetchin' Bones and local bay area DJ (VJ in those days) Mike Bagley, who interviewed the Peppers that night.
@k0stil There's a little bit of it in this reel. The problem with uploading whole songs in manifold, though. First off, YouTube goes out of audio synch when it sees a video glitch. I uploaded some footage a couple of days ago that I had to take down because of the synch issues. This is old Hi8 footage that's probably not even recoverable now. I captured this nearly 10 years ago when the tape was first starting to show age-related damage. So it's as good as it's going to get.
I was born that year; their energy must have travelled all the way to Poland and got into me; I think it's great I can see this stuff on youtube; thanks man
@RRJackson I think they still are; I love their early work as much as the most recent stuff and everything in between even though they came a long way and their music evolved significantly
@ds04 Oh sure. And they still funk it up a little from time to time, but the overwhelming majority of their tunes used to be stuff you could pretty much pogo to until the arteries in your temples burst and your smiling, twitching body landed on the ground. Mainly (IMO) because they spent so much time in small venues and making people move was the name of the game. It changes when the venue gets bigger. Not better or worse, just different.
Thanks. I was using the first Sony Hi8 camcorder, the V99. Nothing particularly special about it, though. It just had a lot more resolution than small camcorders before it. The main reason the footage looks good is because they let me walk around on the stage and shoot video. They were really cool about that.
@TrevaWhateva That's not Hillel, BTW. This is the second tour that they'd had John. He was a monster when he was a kid, though. Just a funk machine. His polyrhythmic sensibilities about how and where to accent the groove were scary-good.
@StratLM They were great. I used to never miss a show when I heard they were coming to town. Sometimes I'd drive to Orlando to catch two in a row if I had the chance. I've only seen them a couple of times since they left EMI, though. The band's still good, but I don't really enjoy shows in gigantic venues.
