I 1st saw Elvis live on his first tour ('76?) Have seen him live 4 times; have most of his work- yet have never seen this- with Chet Baker no less (a brilliant, tragic waste of talent [heroin]) Fantastic
@paulstevencassidy This was at Ronnie Scott's in 1986 two years before he "fell" to his death. Van Morrison also sang "Send in the Clowns" in this set. I have the whole show on vhs w/ interviews w/ Chet. One of my all time favorite music videos. Maybe it's on dvd by now.
I love Chet and Elvis C both. Chet was great on everything he did. Elvis C was great in the 70's and 80's when he played what he played best, rock, or new wave, whatever you want to call it. In this case though, no one can ever take the place of Dinah. Some things should never be messed with, and this is one of them.
I really wish Chet could have been with us longer, to leave us under natural circumstances.
Chet's backing is so delicate and sensitive it nearly turns to smoke at times. That piano player really told a story in his solo--it really took me out! Elvis sounds better than ever and certainly shows he has an ear for the great standards--here a medley of all Sinatra choices.
I'm a fool to want you I'm a fool to want you To want a love that can't be true A love that's there for others too I'm a fool to hold you Such a fool to hold you To want a kiss not mine alone To want a kiss the devil has known Time and time again I said I'd leave you Time and time again I went away But then would come the time when I would need you And once again these words I have to say You don't know how hearts burn For love that can not live yet never dies
Marvelous You don’t know what love is Until you’ve learned the meaning of the blues Until you’ve loved a love you've had to loose You don’t know what love is You don’t know how lips burn Until you’ve kissed and had to pay the cost Until you’ve flipped your heart and you have lost How can you know what love is Do you know how lost hearts fear The thought of reminiscing And lips that taste of tears Loose their taste for kissing
Speechless. I didn't know this existed until I posted Elvis singing this with Marian McPartland on piano in her Piano Jazz radio show. Please tell me where this came from and where I can get more. I've been talking about these two togther to jazz friends who have no idea how much more there is more to Elvis than Pump It Up. You have made a bit more than my day. Thank you.
The song is devastatingly powerful. Gotta say that I have never heard such a nakedly honest rendition of the tragic consequences of love. It's even more poignant with Chet performing it in one of his last onstage appearances.

Genius springs from a deep well. We watch and listen and are fed by our ancient connections.

I love hearing Chet sing this song and Elvis Costello isn't bad either. However Dinah Washington owns the song.

There's a version of Shipbuilding from this same show that I would love to see

the sung Chet Baker version was recently removed, and i'm broken up about it. Elvis is cool, but Chet owned it.
