Madonna knows that Jane is envious and Jane refuses to be convinced, although she does realize that her intimidation towards Madonna is not working and Madonna is throwing it right back at her with a joker's smile. This Madonna is very reminiscent of the Madonna of today - the way she talks and the tone in her voice. Even the way she looks in the face and the way she holds herself. It's just the hair that throws it off. The Madonna of 1989-1992 is almost unrecognizable today.

It seems to me Pauley was trying hard to get inside Madonna, but Madonna was good back then at keeping her guard up, Pauley starts with casual conversation to get her relaxed, but it doesn't work and so she keeps trying, that's why such talk about the dress for so long and Pauley getting frustrated. She even admits at the end that she knows her no better than she did when they first sat down. I think Jane was fascinated by her but couldn't get anything out of her.
