On the trapping,I do a lot of trapping with snares. And let me tell ya.If you have any human sent on that wire the game will smell it and avoid it. if you trying to catch a rabbit and you bait the area you might wind up with a skunk in the snare.because the same bait you used for the rabbit other animal will go for it as well.take a figure 4 trap if you use a green limb for the base and trigger the animal will eat the wood instead of taking the bait you used and you cant leave any bright areas
Hahaha, no joke while I was making my EDC video I called my First Aid Kit a last aid kit (or something like that, I think I said "final") because it's all the help I'm going to need or get. I said that because it was for small things, though. I think "first aid kit" is a really misunderstood term nowadays.
Thank You for this video! You are the first person who is in agreement on the importance of tools first! Brilliant! First tool is a prepared mind and good attitude, then all the tools you mentioned which are absolutely essential.
most important item for me is missing, my sportglasses with head strap on rubber string! it's easy to make fire withe the glass, the head strap is awesome for slingshot, and most important it protects me against dust with making fire, against branches during walking, or snake spit venom/little air bugs for most of the eye parts
Dave...for snares...how come you don't mention or recommend fishing (heavy duty lines)? They are cheap and you get hundreds of yards for your buck. There are some fishing knots that will make sure the snare will never come undone.
What the fuck dude... you sit there for over two minutes talking about survival... If I was a native indian or just a Carnivore ... I would of killed and skinned you within the time.... you spend talking about survival.
i like what you said about the first aid, the main thing i have in my first add kit for security work is blood stoppers, big massive sterile cotton dressings just for when you have to stop blood from spewing out of someone and triangle dressings that you can lash up tight and put a lot of pressure behind and at that stage shits hit the fan. i picked them up cheep as surplus hospital supplies
Dave Canterbury Your An Amazing guy. Great Video's! I love this kind of stuff. I realy want to get out in the woods a few days ruffing it but as of now the closest I've came to ruffing it it eathing a cold can of Baked Beans with a plastic spoon while watching your Video's on Youtube with laptop in my bed room lol.

@YllwNinja A shake light is by far the best to have. I have one attached to my A.L.I.C.E. pack at all times. Weights nothing and it never runs out of batteries.
I packed one of those LED lights that you shake up so that I don't need any batteries. And it does have a magnet that can be used to make a compass needle.
The magnet can destroy a good compass, though.
I also picked up one of those crank radios because it had a battery-free light as well as a siren.
If Dave was along on the incident I might not worry.
If it's just me, I want to be able to work in the dark to fix whatever I screwed up.
I have to laugh a little at Dave saying "you can't make a knife" then he gets paired 7 months later with Cody Lundin, Mr. "I'll go into the wild with exactly nothing...also, shoes are for school children"
Made me laugh that in this vid he has no idea what he's in for :P
i was looking around my house and found a 108 sq foot painters tarp, folds up pretty small threw it in my kit i think it will do me good not sure how strong it is though
Dave, is the Bahco saw worth the money? $30 and up, depending where you buy, seems pretty pricey. Is it really that good? Replacement blades are pricey too aren't they? I use a small Stanley folding saw that uses reciprocating saw blades. The saw was about $15 and the blades vary from a few bucks to $10 and up. There is storage space in the handle for three extra blades.
i love your point on snares, i snare rabbits daily in an area thats just alive with them, i currently have 20 set, i expect to get 1, maybe 2 if im lucky in the morning. your the first guy i heard make that point.
Hmm. I agree and disagree with this. I think hunting for fun is unethical. *That* is just a way for certain types of people to kill things legally, which is the part they really enjoy. Ending a living creature's life would not make me smile, like I see in so many pictures of "hunters" with their trophies. Hunting for *survival* is a whole other story. And no, I don't eat meat.
@warpuppyTN70 WHOA WHOA WHOA....Bear is NOT LAME! Dual survival and M vs W are my fav shows...and they are both great shows. I dont see how you can say Bear is lame? The one problem I have with Dual Survival is that they never show Dave and Cody sleeping in the conditions that they ask and they never comment on the nights sleep they got. Makes me think they arent really sleeping in the shelters that they make....whereas I 100% believe Bear sleeps in his shelters.
@KevinWood44 Bear only spends enough shelter time for the shoot (hotel after)...He has a large crew w/ him,all shows have some fake things but Bear is completely fake-some of his info / ways of dong things is incredibly stupid. Just 1 example, his using a bag to float down a fast moving river: 1) stop action, look close, hidden life preserver on, because 2) a bag WOULD FAIL IN R/L + any1 following that type of crap would now be dead. LAME doesn't begin to cover it.

Wow that was an awesome video dave. Thank you so much for showing me the basics for a self reliance kit. This is much appreciated seeing as i will be soon going out to do some winter survival/camping
25 years give or take of practicing wilderness self-reliance/survival and I have never found a need for a multi-tool in the woods. In my opion there useless dead weight to have to carry. But Dave has me reconsidering.
Lots animals use tools, like sea otters. Some apes even make tools. But only man makes tools to make tools. Too many kit reviews show things do one or two things, but I like that you are talking about making tools with what you have in the kit.
And yes, after the knife and saw, absolutely a pair of pliers. Meet one porcupine at night and you'll learn that. *laughs*
