It has since been transformed even further into a pro street truck that has been featured in various magazines. Infact due to the mustang being so light compared to other cars, the 1969 mustang with just a normal 427 in it not even a cobra jet motor was called the fastest muscle car of that era by speed channel when they did there special. The other cars were just to over weight even for the hemi. Whitch has about the same Hp output as the 427 super cobra jet. But yes the 429 if you have the super cobra jet is a very fast engine
The fastes all stock syclone went 13.1 not 13.6. Just for some info. No stock lighting has ever gon that fast all stock. And i mean everything factory, tires, air filter ect.
I had a low 13sec street car when i was 16, pulled up next to one of these at a stop light he started eggin me on so i im thinkin alright wise ass ill show ya whats up. Next thing i know i seen a black streak go by me, pretty much made me look like a chump LOL
Must not have been stock though, stock they only run a 13.6 in the 1/4 mile with a professional driver at 98MPH. Not to bad though at all for being stock, they compare very well with a Ford Lightening that also run 13.6's but with a much higher trap speed at around 108MPH with a professional driver. The Take off on these things are insanem that Awd is deffinately worth it's weight
The factory rates there vehicles at there best with the best conditions possible. The only thing they dont use is good sticky tires, and they also use professional drivers that can driver much better then anybody hear on youtube. Now I agree with you on the tire part, cause tires mean everything on vehicles.
And also, depends on track temp/weather elevation ect, and im sure there are better drivers on youtube that alot of "pro" drivers. And HP ratings are also not very accurate, just my $0.02
Very true on some parts, as for some of youtube drivers being able to out drive the pro drivers. I dont think so, thats why there on youtube typing and not actualy driving for a team or a company. BUt yes all that does affect HP numbers, and yes HP numbers and sometimes not very accurate. But they are close most of the time
I know quite a few people on this site that are very, very talented drivers. Now a days the numbers are more correct, but back in the 90's and prior, they were a joke haha
Very talanted yes, but pro grade drivers probably very very few. But none the less yes I'm sure there are some on here that are very good at what they do. And yes your very correct about numbers being way off prior to the 90's, we have a 428 super cobra jet engine just sitting in our garage right now. I wanna put it in a 52 F-100 with maybe a super charger on it. But idk though
Yea, no doubt, my dads 70 cutlass w-31 was rated 15hp more than the base cutlass, with a better cam, intake, valves ect. im pretty sure it would make 50 more than the base model at least
Yeah the stock numbers from stock base vehicles to that type of model where way off. Just like they said a 428 super cobra jet was rated at like 380BHP or close to that. There more like 450+BHP
Not when making the cyclone in that era they were normally pretty close with there numbers. It also depends on were they tested it at. A a very hot place where it is humid is going to get lower numbers then a place where it 70 and has very low humidity. Yes lying so the insurance companies is very well known. The 03-04 Cobra is that way, Ford slated the cobra for those years being 380BHP. They almost put that much down to the rear tires.
Not exactly all the time the numbers were/are over what the reating is though. A lot of times with soe manufacturers they actually say the'll make 500WHP while they really only make 478BHP. Look at the nissan GTR35, Nissan said it had more WHP then it actually does. Just depends on the manufacturer and the type of vehicle. A Hybrid is prolly close, a muscle car is prolly more off then it is on though. Weather it's actually positive HP from the factory rating or nagative Hp
Yes, infact 427's 428's and 429 super cobra jet motors are one of the most powerfull motors of that era. The only thing is getting your hands on one, and when your talking about racing. A lot more then just HP comes into play. in 1970's hp started to fall in engine's, weight, gear ratio, tires and drivers all have a huge roll into weather one wins and the other looses. But for the most part the same gearing a 1969, 69 mustang with any of these motors will push the mustang to a win.
They underrated all hp rating for basically all engine's back then for insurance purposes. In all reality that engines prolly pushing near 500BHP if not maybe a little more. There making more HP then a Hemi is, they just underated them so the people who bought the cars wouldnt have to pay really high insurance premiums. Thats all really, believe me even a good strong 351 could be making that much.
on the street if the truck creaps foward a few inches its not a big deal. what times do you get on your truck? i have seen sy's as fast as 10.80's running a bowtie block and bigger turbo, front mount etc...
badd ass truck, one hell of a hole shot. a buddy of mine had a sy back in 91 he was running 12.40's with just the boost turned up/and a dynomax exhaust. the funny thing was he would always say his truck is faster on the street than track...he proved this by beating many 11.70 cars on the street. i finally figured out what he ment by creaping..he could only hold so much boost at the track or the truck would break the beam and he would red light..
i want a syclone. i like big trucks but little trucks have a place in my driveway too. my first truck was a 2wd 88 dakota SE. had it for 2 or 3 years and never had to fix it.
qwerty1234..yeah im jealous of his truck and what is pos?? and if i did call you a dingleberry?? why are you responding to me on another vehicle?? dingleberry!!!!
You're a bitch dude! You drive a fucking Ford Contour!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! My fucking grandmother owns one of those because it's automatic and the slowness of it helps her feel safe. HAHAHAHA! FUCKING CONTOUR! I'll bet my VW Bus could outrun that fucking weak ass shit.

Seems that most of GM's badasses of the '80s were v6 powered. Syclone, Typhoon, Grand National (Regal T-Type)...especially GNX, and don't forget the '89 Turbo TransAm (discontinued because of its ability to effortlessly smoke the base corvette).
Do you even have a Syty? I actually own one and anyone who knows ANYTHING about them is that the LB4 heads are the worse flowing heads on the 4.3. CPIs are marginally better but 96+ Vortecs out flow ported LB4's and CPI's and ported Vortecs are unmatched so don't even try to say you know what you're talking about.
It would destroy an srt-10, and run past it like it were standing still. The 0-60 time for the syclone was over a second quicker than the srt-10, and with about half as much horsepower. The reason is because the sy was a turbo v6 in a gmc sonoma compact pickup, whereas the srt-10 was a naturally aspirated v10 in a full size pickup, BIG weight difference.
One of the best secrets out there! Fastest production truck ever, supposedly till the F-150 lightning (And I'm still not convinced about THAT one). When this Truck first came out, it could beat the latest model Ferrari in the quarter mile (Sorry I dont remember which one, probably the Testarossa?); Not bad for a little truck from GM!
yep, the syclone was the quickest production truck ever, with a 0-60 time in 4.8 seconds or less. The Srt-10 was the fastest with a top speed of 154 mph. The syclone could go about 145 mph, just about 2 mph shy of the lightining's top speed.
yea those syclone and typhoons are awesome but you also have to think when did the first srt-10 ram come out? i really dont know exactly but way after the syclone and typhoon came out...
They may be faster "Technically", but I'd still take the Syclone over either of the other "fast trucks" any day. Then again, my first ride was an 80's s-15 with the 4.3 and that thing would do burnouts all day (Which all teens LOVE to do), so I'm kinda biased! LOL
@nightmathzombieethan Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'd much rather have a Syclone than a Lightning, I think the Modular Ford Motors are huge peices of shit.
@HKapollo Could be.... To be honest I just remember as a kid reading a review on it in Car and Driver when it first came out. I remember being amazed by the fact that it could beat a Ferrari! I THINK it was the Testarossa, but like I said, I could be wrong....If it was the F355 that would be even more impressive.
@nightmathzombieethan My mistake it was the 348. The 355 didn't come out until 94, but I know of at least one magazine that race them and the Syclone came out on top.
@HKapollo Very impressive! The 355 was one of my favorites too....just the sound of that car is amazing. Now I need to go look that up....just the idea of a Ferarri having it's ass handed to it by a GMC truck cracks me up....
That's incredibly inaccurate. This is a 4.3 litre V6 engine (GNX has a 3.8 litre V6). The Typhoone/Syclones have water to air intercoolers as a opposed to the air to air intercoolers that the GNX's have. The the Typhoon/Syclone engine's are based off of the vortec engines (same block and heads the early AWD Astro's with CPI had). Typhoon/Syclone engine's had hypereutectic pistons and lower compression and many other improvements than the regular vortec 4.3 V6's.
Actually you're wrong too, it was in simple terms, an LB4 TBI 4.3 with a turbo and multi port injection. Even with heads that flow the worst numbers in history and a cam identical to a #2 pencil it still rocked everything in it's path and does to this day.
its turbo surge... it has no blowoff, so the sound you hear is the air bouncing back and fourth against the exhuast turbine making that tssh tssh thssh sound... turbo surge
It doesn't have a blowoff valve (I believe). Whereas anyone with a Honda and a turbo pushing 2psi slaps the loudest damn thing they can find on there, this just sounds that much better.

You're kidding, right? Heads that flow the worst numbers in history? Go read...

Lots of fun but the biggest pain in the ass vehicle I have ever owned. It's plagued by heat problems.

Its turbo sounds like no other(that Ive heard!!!)
crazdayz 5 years ago
its turbo surge... it has no blowoff, so the sound you hear is the air bouncing back and fourth against the exhuast turbine making that tssh tssh thssh sound... turbo surge
toreyjw1 4 years ago
It doesn't have a blowoff valve (I believe). Whereas anyone with a Honda and a turbo pushing 2psi slaps the loudest damn thing they can find on there, this just sounds that much better.
