  • Fucking love this tune, it's more than just fast, it's well structured. Something those Dragonforce faggots will never have.

  • this song is fuckin amazin!

  • this song is so FUCKING heavy. it just plainly makes my head explode! BOOM (there it goes)

  • Plus, putting Brann Dailor and Travis Barker in comparision is very laughable. Travis Barker is admittively fast, but Brann is just rediculously good. No comparision there, Brann smokes Travis.

  • This song is just so damn excellent, love it.

  • Mastodon is the shit overall if you wanna here some funny shit from them watch the Aqua Teen Hunger Force movie and you will see at the beginning it is mastodon playing the song! its amazing and hilarious

  • Oh shit that was them! I thought the band playing sounded familiar. "IF YOU MAKE OUT IN HERE I WILL CUT YOU LIPS AND TOUNGUE FROM YOUR HEAD WITH A...LLLIIIINOOOLEEEEUUMMM KNNNNIIIIIFE!" AWESOME!

  • overproduced? thats all it is, their guitars are fake. they cant play that fast, i dont think anyone can. besides that their vocals, and drums all suck too. thats why they got booed off stage at mayhem fest. i was pissed that i missed Mastodon's set.

  • no, I assure you its possible to play that fast, but its damn near impossible to play that fast for that long and not miss a note. Somebody like Batio could do it no prob, but Sam and Herman are not musicians of that caliber. They are bums.

  • this is true.

  • Dream Theater could play it. Not that they would want to play that horrible, un-musical crap. Progressive Nation! DT, Mastodon, and BTBAM!

  • Who in the hell is comparing Brann to Travis Barker...??!? I'm no drummer, but bloody hell son. The time signatures and constant thunder coming from Brann's set doesn't even belong on the same scale as Barker's 4/4 wankness... shit's weak!

  • The beginning of this song is epic. Siff compare this to Dragonforce btw.

  • People wank off to Dragonforce but this is crazier stuff. I'm new to Mastodon, but I'm liking it more and more... I love their time signatures. Their music is a sonic wall, unbelievable. And the drummer is a madman. Cray-zay!

  • yeh- dragonforce are talented but have 1 trick- speed.their songs are way too long n repetitive, could never listen to a whole album cos it all sounds the same.

Mastodon on the other hand are full-on but very smart and prog-rock in their arrangements. the are damn good musicians and have managed to create interesting music thats still heavy and intense.

im not a metal fan, but i like metal / hc bands that push the envelope- these, dillinger, refused, meshuggah, botch etcetc

  • im here to hate on dragonforce but they pretty much suck. ive seen them live, i saw their set but missed mastodon's back at mayhem fest, i was pissed. DF doesnt sound anything like their album stuff, i mean nowhere close. its almost like its speed about about 25% on the albums.

  • Brann Dailor is uncomparable to Travis Barker.

    SORRY.

I guess he's a nice guy and a decent drummer in his own right but I highly doubt he do anything in alternate time signatures like that one riff that goes from 7/8 to 6/8 that keeps happening (musicians know where im talking about)...another good song from a great band.

    peace

  • fucking greatness, i just recently started listenin to mastodon, and i already fell in love with them. metal and mastodon FTW

  • this is better than porn.

  • Hope it is, gonna see them next sunday.

  • WTF why are people comparing Brann to Travis Barker? Brann took a shit and he named it Travis Barker!!!

  • thank you so much for saying that

  • haha nice! and very true

  • It's difficult to compare drummers. Travis is good in his own right, but he plays for a shitty band. As it is, we'll probably never hear the extent of his talent on any album. Who knows - could be that we've heard the best of him already.

  • This song is just amazing, the riffs... no words can discribe and the drums as always. Brann Dailor is honestly better than Travis Barker in my opinion.

  • Mastodon = Best new band in the last 15 years

hell, best band in the last 15 years,

FUCK IT! BEST BAND OF ALL TIME!

  • i wake up and say that every morning

  • i saw them at the unholy alliance on sunday.... friggin sweet, way better than trivium, and comparing them to slayer is insulting to mastodon

  • did anyone else see the flash up at 1:39

fucking mental song stellar drumming awesome guitaring.

  • ya, i saw it, it comes up a lot of times during the song.

  • It's not a flash it's a heart with the Mastodon logo on it on a blue watery background

  • I grew up with brann and when he came to town the last time he played me a rough cut of their new alumb and all i have to say is holy shit! This one is gonna put them over the top fucking incredible so much feeling gives you chills

  • yourlonely eh

  • This song is absolutely nuts!

And I mean that in a good way...

  • nice musics cheezy fans

  • Does anybody know what this is taken from? Like, is it from the Unholy Alliance tour or something? It seems to me that metal bands, most of them now adays, only get to play in small clubs, unless the band has been around a long time. And this show looks like it's pretty huge if it's just a Mastodon concert. I could understand tho if like, Slayer was headlining. Don't get me wrong tho, Mastodon deserves even bigger crowds than this. One of the best metal bands, if not the best.

  • not only metal too, they seem hark back to king crimson, at the drive in, animal collective, bob dylan, jimi hendrix, melvins and many others. just awesome.

  • their new album will be even more progressive, harmonic and mellow than Blood Mountain. some fans will hate it, I guess, but I cant wait to hear the real Mastodon.

  • 'the real mastodon'? fucking snobby milktard, where there last three albums fake mastodon then? wtf?

  • Watch some in the studio videos on Crack The Skye for once. Brent himself says that with all those albums, they were improving more and more each time. What he said, is they want to be more progressive and harmonic this time. It's what he always wanted Mastodon to be like.

  • well thats a quarter of the band then, and it still doesn't mean that the first albums weren't the real band; that's the music they made it's what they are. if you mean this is the real vision that they had in mind when they started, i can't speak for all of 'em but i reckon all their albums were what they were going for at the time

  • Thats what I mean. Crack The Skye is basically Brent's "vision incarnate". He promised they will still continue on making the heavy stuff, though.

  • the neutrality of the vocals, i think, complement mastodon's sound no end. and to me thats why they're becoming increasingly less furious as it was, perhaps the wrong term. now they have even more feeling through honesty and versatility rather than just being generic.

thank you mastodon for breaking boundaries. best metal band since judas priest and black sabbath.

  • fuck i love that middle bit!

    awesome

  • Oh god, you're a bunch of metal nerds. Just enjoy it for it is. Sheesh.

  • They're getting more technical for sure, but this record signifies the end of old Mastodon. The music is going in a different direction, and Troy's not using his epic fucking roar he's had since Lifesblood.

  • horns up! XD

  • thanks mindriot

  • i want a beard now

  • Great technical band. Perfect for smoking dank.

  • the only times i like the vid was at 0:00-4:32. the rest of the vid SUCKED!!!

  • I really like the vox on the part at 2:35

Are there any mastodon songs where the singer sings like that the whole song, or at least the majority of it

  • From the album Blood Mountain, you could try This Mortal Soil, Sleeping Giant, Colony Of Birchmen, Hunters Of The Sky and Siberian Divide. There are less of these moments on the older albms, but Seabeast and especially Naked Burn on Leviathan are good for it. The new album may be out January '09 and i imagine there will be more singing, less screaming so make sure you look out for it!; hope this helps.

  • Damn! This bassist kicks ass! But i don't like the vocalist :/

The musik rocks but i think the vocalist and his voice doesn't compare.

I know... you'll hate me for this comment. xD

but, hey, it's just my opinion ;)

  • great song!

  • 1 of the best mastodon's song

  • mastodon and opeth are the new evolution of metal

  • Lets not forget cynic and Gojira

  • i didn't know about them... ok, i will hear them... ( thanx )

  • and what about Ephel Duath, Behold... The Arctopus, Meshuggah, Atheist...

  • hate youtube for their fucked up comments... what does any band you've named to do with Mastodon? Except of their instruments -> nothing!

Need some quip comments, i'm tired of those what's about this oder those shity bands?

Mastodon is UNIQUE/EPIC you can't compare other Bands with theme, get it!

  • I was replying to another comment, about the bands that are innovating and doing new things in metal, I also think Mastodon is unique, and never said those bands or another one can be even similar to them, I love Mastodon more than any other.

  • true, but there is other bands that are leaving a big impact on the future of metal, eg Dark Tranquility, Children of Bodom, In Flames,Tool, Arch Enemy, ect, ect. Opeth and Mastodon are contributing to the more wierd and disturbing side of metal, lol but they are both awsum.

  • opeth is like listening to recordings of peoples diarhea hitting the floor

  • i have never been with diarhea hitting the floor... did you?

  • hahahaha

  • I agree, but... ( and maybe i'm wrong ), Opeth and Mastodon gave new complex rythm sections to the songs. I love Children of Bodom and In flames ( the first three albums mostly ), but the rythm sections are totally metal. In Opeth or Mastodon you can find some Jazz slight touches, that you cannot find in other band ( i insist, maybe i'm wrong ).

Maybe tool gives different breaks, but their 3 or 4 albums sound too similar....

  • youre right... also check out gojira's album from mars to sirius. its no mastodon but still if you like this its pretty good.

  • ok for me tool & mastodon maybe not new but...

  • so i guess that everyone has seen the subliminal message, but what does it say under "mastodon" ? i can't see what it say..

  • its a cover of the Capillarian Crest single

  • at first seconds (at 0:09) there is a subliminal message that says mastodon and its a picture of a heat (i guees it from them)

  • Wow, subliminal message in the first few seconds

  • yea!!!

  • Masterpiece Peroid!

  • easily the most advanced and progressive song of theirs

  • holy shit!!!

  • awesome drumming

  • omg.. worst filming and editing but a great song -.-'

  • Best metal going today. Mastodon kicks.

  • Thanks for sharing PsychB.

  • this song tantalizes the fuckin brain

  • This is the best song I´ve ever heard

  • let's not over-react/get carried away here, this is decent at best...

  • And I say, let's not undermine the raw talent present here, this is a great combination of sonic remiss and well-structured cacophony at 'least'. Not the best song ever to be heard, but most definitely a damn good song off of a damn good album from a damn good band.

  • ok,if you put it that way,I agree

  • wtf is that picture that pops up at 3:22, its very hard to stop it exactly wen it pops up bc its so fast but its like a picture of a heart and it says mastodon

  • its the cover art of the Capillarian Crest single. It is a heart. Probably has some relation to the whole capillarian/capillary thing on the songs name.

  • 1:58 lick always blows my mind. Love mastodon!

  • this song makes me want to ride a wave in to infinity.

  • oh well. different stroke for different folks. tomato, tomato. and all that jazz.

  • open minds like your own make me want to ride a wave into infinity.

  • whatever the hell that means. i'll just assume it's good.

  • lol you said it first

  • I love this song.

  • Incredible solos!

  • awesome

    Love this band <3

  • this is a pretty good song

  • This song has one of the best prog/metal mid-sections ever! The part in 5/8 is SO BRUTAL. I lose my shit every time... I start throwing stuff... tipping over tables... crashing into other motorists. It's a bad scene.

  • HOLY FUCK I haven't lol'd so hard in a long time.

  • Brutal? You call that brutal? Oh dear...

Well, I like this song, but it's definitely a far cry from brutal.

If you want to listen to some real brutal stuff, then put in some old Mayhem.

  • Hmmm... When I say brutal, I mean it in the way that Miles Davis would when he says "them cats was terrible!" It's a compliment.

Nothing about Mayhem is worth complimenting. In fact, bringing them up in a Mastodon comment page is a crime against metal... Unless it's within a list of the bands that Mastodon dominates every night.

  • Apples and oranges, but brutal is brutal and metal is metal. This kind of metal isn't brutal; it doesn't mean that it's not good, but that it could never be brutal.

Saying that this kind of metal could be brutal would be analogous to calling a Chihuahua deadly: Chihuahuas are great dogs, but they aren't capable of replacing pit bulls anytime soon.

  • Brutal is'nt a genre, it's a fluke, musicians who seemingly have skill in thier instraments choose to barrage their audiance with one or two repetative riffs/beats instead of playing melodic and technical. Then they have singers who cant sing, most can't even do proper growls or sound anything close to "brutal" Mayhem is complete and utter garbage. Also the fact that brutal is now the label of a shit metal genre, does not mean that good bands cant sound brutal.

  • All black metal is shit? It's funny how you can say that when Emperor is just as technical and melodic if not more so, but that's Emperor.

You're right: Most black metal is repetitive with a bunch of screeching, but some bands have risen above traditional black metal to extend the concepts to a more complex classical style (i.e. Emperor and Windir)... I digress.

Brutal isn't a genre: It's an adjective that is sometimes used to describe music that is full of hate and irreverence.

  • for the most part I agree with you about windir, however from I have heard from emperor thier melodic and technical aspects are too overshadowed or pushed in the background. It really boils down to preference. I just prefer how windir uses the vocals to compliment the melody.

  • Emperor's most technical album is (in my opinion) Prometheus: The Discipline of Fire and Demise, although it's not necessarily my favorite (Anthems is and it is relatively technical). Cor Scorpii is another black metal band that is similar to Windir and very technical, so .. you're agreeing that not all black metal is shit?

@ Erase: Where the fuck did anybody mention immortal?

  • Brutal death metal is a genre lol. Any who their are still some good black metal bands but the scene has turned in to a fashion contest its fucking ridiculous. Black can be technical but not so much. Death metal will always be more technical but still that does int make music better how technical it is. I like progressive music mainly so prog black bands like enslaved and broknager i love not to mention Arcturus emperor too not prog but ambient own

  • Woah, Immortal as technical as Mastodon? Maybe I just haven't been hearing the right Immortal tracks...

  • I gave you a thumbs down about "they have singers who cant sing..." because I believe that a singer just might want his singing to sound a certain way. They don't have to sound like other singers. They are their own band. They are Mastodon.

  • I was in no way referring to mastadon, mastadon has mastered their vocals. I was refferring to the generic death/black metal bands that cannot even perform properly within their own genre.

  • Its spelled Mastodon not Mastadon. Again even with not referring to Mastodon, I think bands sound the way they want to sound.

  • NOt quite right. If they have a strong producer, they will sound even better. FOr the Black album of Metallica, the producer made them replay endlessly and rearranged the sound to something they couldnt see "themselves playing" in words of Hetfield

  • OMFG. Ok, I know all about production of music and how the quality can sound. The original comment that I replied to was worded in a way in which they were implying that some singers can't sing or don't sound they way they should for a particular genre. I still believe a singer maybe, at least in some cases sounds the way he/she wants to sound, despite popularity.

  • yeah bob rock is a talent killer

  • haa they have like subliminal ads in this video, showin split second pictures of their album.

  • actually, thats the album cover of the song itself :P

  • @ 1:52 there is like a picture of their album for like a quarter of a second !?wtf?!

  • I think Mastodon is a Metal-Prog Band.with some influences of Hardcore and Stoner!

  • possibly the best metal band of the decade. although they might share the throne with system of a down and protest the hero.

  • out of ever drumer in the world brann has to be the most unique! love all of his beats even gave up guitar for 2 years so i could try and do drums lol

  • Mastodon Rocks.Eternal Respect from Greece!!!

  • they should make more tunes like linoleum knife

  • Please tell me you're making an attempt at sarcasm and we just can't tell since it's in text.

  • yes haha, and people still negged me. it was a joke! everyones getting all worked up cause some dude called them emo as a joke a couple pages back... theyre obviously not haha. theyre my favorite band.

  • In one word: bullshit... u r pathetic. (Emo was created many years ego and is a sort of an alternative whatever...while Mastodon combine Thrash, death and sludge metal with grindcore and whatever). Don't talk dirty.

  • holy shit you guys need to get a life...

  • Yeah I saw u were joking a minuter after I sent it (;

  • Mastodon is soooooooooooooo emo.

lmao who the fuck said that? lmao

  • And there's no way in hell that you can tel me Mastodon is emo.

  • My Chemical Romance and AFI aren't really emo.. shitty bands like Hawthorne Heights and The Devil Wears Prada are.

  • LOL, yes they are very emo. /wrists more

  • who the hell said this is emo. emo is shit like my chemical romance and AFI. not that those bands are bad its just not anywhere near mastodon this is heavy metal

  • yes, yes they are

    idiot

  • I think you're mistaken guy, learn your music.

  • Ha, yeah they are, quit kidding yourself

  • How are those bands emo?

  • im not violent against emo's...

    its just bullshit.

    and thats not metal

    lol

  • Emo is supposed to be a form of hardcore punk but it has come in its 4rth wave back in the 2000-2004 era so its probably changed somewhat like with the self loathing and whiny depressing lyrics and screaming. Its not something im going to put a lot of my time into researching so if Im wrong about it I dont even care because its such a gay trend I dont feel its worth my time.

  • This might be a decent song if the drummer wasn't trying to out-wank Mike Portnoy

  • Brann is just doing the drummer's job. I dont know if you tried to sound "witty" or something, but Brann is great at what he does.

  • This is a decent song, in part because of Brann's drumming, which is very jazz influenced and give Mastodon a part of their trademark sound

  • Mike Portnoy and Brann Dailor have a totally different style, dumb ass.

  • oh yeah mastodon is awesome.

    chur

  • i dont think alt man down below knows what emo is.

plus emo's have died. much like nu metal.

  • lol, in the last town i lived in there were a shit load of emos, and i never understood it, super gay, but then i moved to another town, just 100 miles away, and people are like, "wtf is emo???" lol, im just happy to be away from them god damn life sucking emos!!! hahahaha

  • mozart woud love mastodon i guess..anyway,i love this band...

  • hm you can't say that ... it wasn't the same 300 years ago. but mastodon is quite progressive and technical. i really like it and i'm gonna see 'em in december with slayer ^^

    HELL YEAH !

  • If this song were a woman, she would be beautiful, and I would make love to her.

    More than once.

  • If this song was a woman. She would probably scare my pants off and have her way with me. More than once.

  • yep hes a fag

  • how can u even consider this emeo....fucking ignorant....

  • calling this emo is really ridiculous :/ doesnt even have anything comparable to any elements of emo music in it.

  • Their breakdowns kick ass.

  • dis aint gay emo shit... this... is metal.

  • you don't know nothing about nothing if you don't like it why are you here? go listen to simon and garfunkel and blow your best friend witch you probly done for years any how.

  • oh man, a guy that listens to Bloc Party and Muse, comes to tell us about music. Pure lol.

  • .... says the man with muse and bloc party as favorite... * cough *

  • die

  • I love watching music nerds get all bent outta shape when their music is called emo

  • Because emo has a terrible connotation with it, and is probably on the same rudeness level as a racial slur. If you call Mastodon, one of the beastliest progressive/technical metal bands since Death, EMO, then you might as well be calling a black person a nigger, same shit.

  • thats cause emo fucking sucks thats why

  • Fuck, this song's good! My favourite of 'em

  • Why do people feel the need to decipher the lyrics? Just enjoy the fucking music.

Mastodon's new album is gonna melt fucking faces

  • because the lyrics are as important as the music... so if you dont understand that.. we are sorry... Mastodon´s lyrics are simply brilliant..

  • since when are lyrics just as important? you think those cavemen used to sing while the bashed on shit because it sounded awesome ? dont think so. Also a song without lyrics can excist, a song without instrumentals just plain sucks

  • well sorry if you think that so... have a nice life....lol

  • teehee you too, mastodon rules

  • agree :P

  • Just looking at Troy sing would melt your face.

  • I hate when people say the lyrics don't make sense because they don't understand them.

  • Capillarian gone away Capillarian gone away It's a shattered wave Cosmogenic cycles Universal dreams The unseen essence Energies refreshed 12 years of silence Frivolous to moments Shake the hand of lightning Capillarian carnate Capillarian carnate
  • You don't have to go Escaping from the long way And leave us here all alone Carve Carve out your soul Lay it on the altar And leave us here all alone This river is running violence A way to catch our breath Rising from the mercury We will climb to bestow our trust Take away the anchor Amplify the mystery Inhale the earth and wind Map out the plans to our test
