I haven't read all of the comments, but Sergei was her first love and she started skating with him when she was 10 ( I think), and was an innocent young woman when he died. She is a grown woman now and has lived through heartbreak, and Ilya is not a pairs skater! You can't compare the two, but either way, I love them all!
What gets me when seeing these two together is how Ilia has taken to pairs skating. It's not easy for a singles skater to suddenly take on pairs like that, yet he always looked comfortable in that role.

WOW. I had no idea that anyone wasn't thrilled to see Katia & Ilya skate this. I was so happy to see them interact that I cried watching them. Daria looks like Sergie, Liza like Ilya. Both seem well adjusted. Obviously thay are happy together.

Okay, I'm not gonna hold back. I have been reading these rumours about Katia's supposed love affair with Zhulin back in 1991 and I just wonder what on EARTH are these accusations based on? Do you know ANY of these people in question personally, are you an insider to this skating community?! Like said Katia MARRIED SERGEI in 1991!! Katia thought she would never love again when he died.She had Daria to keep her going.Later she met llia kulik and they got married and had a little girl.They are a very happy family now, but she will always remember her Sergei. She was 18 then and if she made a mistake, it is very understandable. Kulik does not look an affectionate type of husband at all and Beroev might remind Katya of Sergey. We all are human beings and cant be insured against falling in love.

The skating of Katia and Ilya seems much more sensuous than her skating with Grinkov, which was brilliant, but much more technical. It's amazing to see the outcome a different partner creates.
I have to say that I'm really bothered by some of the comments made here. I think it speaks volumes about what an amazing man Ilia is to take on so much responsibility, including raising a child, at such a young age when he could have been having fun being single.

I'm happy that Katia found love again. But it is just not the same watching her skate with Ilia. G and G were incomparable to me. They were a fairy tale on and off the ice. Katia was lucky to have found Sergei even if she only had him for a short time. As someone else said, they will meet again in heaven some day. Until then, I hope Katia lives a full, rich life. As much as Sergei loved Katia, I'm sure he would have wanted that for her and Daria too.

Thank you for posting this. I loved to watch G & G skate. When I use to watch them skate the three words that came to my mind was, beauty, grace and love and now when I watch Katia and Ilia skate I think of the words, purity, sincerity and sweetness. I do miss watching her and Sergei skate together but at least he's in a place where he can no longer be in pain and one day meet his wife and daughter again and they him. Also it's good that she's found love and joy again.
Ilia doesn't look at Katia much when they skate together~~~ maybe that is just a display that he isn't really use to skating in a pair but still you would think he'd look at her or something. He just sorta has his mouth open and looking everywhere but at Katia.
Funny thing about someone like Ilia, over in America, a male figure skater is almost certainly gay or at least extremely feminine(think Johnny Queer, oops, I mean Weir), but in Russia, male figure skaters and gymnasts are some of the coolest dudes on the block. I sit and watch this video and am sad. I watched Sergei and Katia skate and you could see the love and fell the love. I watch these two and he doesn't look at her like Sergei did. She will be with her true prince once again in heaven.
On a side note, I was lucky enough to see Katia and Sergei skate, ice side and it was truly breathtaking. They made me cry at how much they loved each other. I was devastated when he died but not more than his wife who was there by his side when it happened... I am happy she did not let her sorrow and loss cripple her heart and that she found love again... Ilia is amazing....

If you have never lost anyone then you have no idea what it feels like or what it is like to grieve. Katia and Ilia did not go out there and skate Moonlight Sonata or Voaclise. They went out and showed THEIR relationship. Katia resisting Ilia at the beginning, being scared and then the final pose falling in his arms. I found that it was beautiful and Sergei would want nothing more than Katia to be happy...as her fans should.

Thank you for this clip! I have attended only one "Stars On Ice" show but I was lucky enough to be there the year that Ilia and Katia performed this. To me, it's a perfect routine, a beautiful combination of music, choreography and the skaters, of course. So great to see the rehearsal as well.
I am not comparing him. I think he is a wonderful skater and the name "Russian Prince on Ice" really suits him. I know Illia is a much better skater than Sergei was. That is why Sergei was told to become to pair figure skater. I just can be an romanticist which got in the way when I wrote my comment. They do well but the emotion is not the same as when she skated with Sergei. It is nice to see she has loved again but I hope she still wears Sergei's ring around her neck. When she and Sergei skated together I saw them as one. Although Illia is good with her, there is something missing. Sergei fills that missing part or emotion,completeness and everything else.

Katia had no affair in 1991 that made her want to leave Sergei. She MARRIED Sergei in 1991 in April. She wasn't pregnant til 1992.

I'm happy that Katia found love again. But it is just not the same watching her skate with Ilia. G and G were incomparable to me. They were a fairy tale on and off the ice. Katia was lucky to have found Sergei even if she only had him for a short time. As someone else said, they will meet again in heaven some day. Until then, I hope Katia lives a full, rich life. As much as Sergei loved Katia, I'm sure he would have wanted that for her and Daria too.

I agree, it's just hard to watch her with anyone other than Sergei, they were just so perfect. I'm glad she has someone in her life but I think that Sergei will always be her great love.

Thank you for posting this. I loved to watch G & G skate. When I use to watch them skate the three words that came to my mind was, beauty, grace and love and now when I watch Katia and Ilia skate I think of the words, purity, sincerity and sweetness. I do miss watching her and Sergei skate together but at least he's in a place where he can no longer be in pain and one day meet his wife and daughter again and they him. Also it's good that she's found love and joy again.

Ilia doesn't look at Katia much when they skate together~~~ maybe that is just a display that he isn't really use to skating in a pair but still you would think he'd look at her or something. He just sorta has his mouth open and looking everywhere but at Katia.

Funny thing about someone like Ilia, over in America, a male figure skater is almost certainly gay or at least extremely feminine(think Johnny Queer, oops, I mean Weir), but in Russia, male figure skaters and gymnasts are some of the coolest dudes on the block. In Russia, they probably laugh at what girly boys Tom Brady and LeBron James are, or something...

I sit and watch this video and am sad. I watched Sergei and Katia skate and you could see the love and fell the love. I watch these two and he doesn't look at her like Sergei did. She will be with her true prince once again in heaven.

On a side note, I was lucky enough to see Katia and Sergei skate, ice side and it was truly breathtaking. They made me cry at how much they loved each other. I was devastated when he died but not more than his wife who was there by his side when it happened... I am happy she did not let her sorrow and loss cripple her heart and that she found love again... Ilia is amazing....

I feel Rachel shows here immaturity and insensitivity. She lost her husband in 1995 this was filmed in 1998. Everyone grieves differently. Should she be sad forever? How unfair to expect that. If you have never lost anyone then you have no idea what it feels like or what it is like to grieve. Before you make an unfair or insensitive remark know all the facts and perhaps try to walk in someone elses shoes for a moment before you judge them. She deserves happiness... good for her.

of course she was sad, her husband died and she'll never see him again. she was only 24 when he dies , so she cant spend all her life in grief. life goes on andshe delt with it the best she could. you shoukd read my sregei or see the movie, then you'll understand her grief and all that she has gone through.

Katia and Ilia did not go out there and skate Moonlight Sonata or Voaclise. They went out and showed THEIR relationship. Katia resisting Ilia at the beginning, being scared and then the final pose falling in his arms. I found that it was beautiful and Sergei would want nothing more than Katia to be happy...as her fans should.

This is the exact video where I first layed eyes on G&G, who became such great idols to me over the past several months. I skate for them now and I'm beyond glad Katia still skates and that Ilia is there for her =)

I agree; not taking anything away from Ilia, he is marvelous, but it is hard for me as well. What Sergei and Ekaterina had was so unique and cannot be repeated by her pairing on the ice with anyone, IMHO.

Thank you for this clip! I have attended only one "Stars On Ice" show but I was lucky enough to be there the year that Ilia and Katia performed this. To me, it's a perfect routine, a beautiful combination of music, choreography and the skaters, of course. So great to see the rehearsal as well.

I am not comparing him. I think he is a wonderful skater and the name "Russian Prince on Ice" really suits him. I know Illia is a much better skater than Sergei was. That is why Sergei was told to become to pair figure skater. I just can be an romanticist which got in the way when I wrote my comment. So now I look back on my comment and realize it was sorta stupid. haha

They do well but the emotion is not the same as when she skated with Sergei. It is nice to see she has loved again but I hope she still wears Sergei's ring around her neck. When she and Sergei skated together I saw them as one. Although Illia is good with her, there is something missing. Sergei fills that missing part or emotion,completeness and everything else.
