  • A Neophyte Liberal Collegian with more Knowledge than sense; as for his money, he could have donated it to me. I am a charity case and a viable tax right off.

  • This guy trying to imitate Henry David Thoreau should have known that Thoreau had friends who dropped by regularly, friends that knew Thoreau well, and friends that were well off themselves.

Most notably was Ralph Waldo Emerson, with whom Thoreau had resided prior to his little stint on the shores of Walden Pond.

It was Emerson himself that once stated, "Imitation is suicide."

This guy should have followed his own heart and path instead of trying to follow Jack London's and Thoreau's.

  • im pretty sure he died from a poisonous berry that looked like a safe one and if you coment back at me about how wikipedia let me tell you wikipedia sometimes changes the story a little watch the movie and read the book!

  • @VegetaBaldanza

The movie/book aren't entirely factual. They stuck pretty close, but ultimately, no one knows exactly what happened to him at every step of his journey. Some secrets died with him.

  • god why cant there be more people like him .... that's what i want in someone i want to spend my time with ... i can grow within an alliance like that

  • /watch?v=aWoc-pOUaOc

  • lol plagerisim (how ever you spell it) :D

  • RIP Chris. McCandles ; thanks for showing us we all can be free :)

  • guys, i don't know how you can you call him stupid? this guy was 24, very smart like he really understood how things worked and the flaws in them, and he may have made some strange decisions but no less i really respect this guy. Also if you're commenting without seeing the movie.. watch it before you say anything , then you might understand it better.

  • This part below was purposely not part of the movie.

Attention possible visitors. "S.O.S. I need your help. I am injured, near death, and too weak too hike out of here. I am all alone, this is no joke. In the name of God, please remain to save me. I am out collecting berries close by and shall return this evening.

Thank you, Chris McCandless. August ?"

He screwed up and no longer thought of himself as the free spirit Alex Supertramp.

  • @ALLinALLgood it's not that he screwed up.. it is that he realized in a time like that you should be called by your god givin name .. or somthing.. that's not exact but in the movie it is along those lines

  • @derito123222 I realize that he came from a dysfunctional materialistic family reality. A unhealthy environment (micro family) and (macro society). To make sense of it all we sometimes contemplate / search for God. To know God is to get as close as possible to nature as one can. To bad he only used young western wisdom and not also old eastern wisdom. A deep understanding of George Ohsawa's macrobiotics would have saved him.

  • I really admire what he has done... and I understand his reasons

  • @Ofc109, if u didnt know his whole point was to live of the land. At least he had the ball and the will to that, and dont diss the dead fag.

    R.I.P Supertramp

  • sounds like this guy, though interesting and full of ideals, was stupid. You go up against mother nature, unprepared, you will lose every time. He went pell mell into a situation he had no idea in how to survive. Prayers to the family, but this guy deserved what he got. He wanted to escape society, but asked society to save him. Ironic

  • Haha thank you, i try to remember saying that to myself everyday...we are all here together and we are all each other has...i may never meet you, but i wish you a happy life in all that you do! god bless bud

  • Great video! I'm a big fan of Chris...

(check out my Into the wild-video if you're interested, please forgive me for spamming :)

  • This is life guys.......prepare? Anyone can do that... anyone can prepare and live on and have less of a challenge. Some people just WANT TO BE.......pick up and go.. go and just BE. No need to insult his intelligence. This was a man with a degree. He was not a idiot. He made his suicide seem like a "accident". Some people just don't want to be part of this world but don't want to see like "cowards" on the way out......

  • @edemvedson This was on the other side of the piece of paper he wrote "i lived a great life and thank the lord, god bless all" .. Deaths a fierce meadowlark:But to die having made something more equal to centuries then muscles and bone,is mostly to shed weakness. The mountains are dead stone, the people admire or hate their stature, their insolent quietness, the mountains are not softened or troubled and a few dead men's thoughts have the same temper.. With that said i think he commited suicide too

  • I live in Alberta Canada and today the weather is -30 some winter days its -40. I would never go into the wildreness with out being prepared. There is many diffrent ways to commit suicide. I think and its my opinion only; but I feel that Chris felt like he didnt fit in and wanted a way out. This was his form of suicide. However, Chris made me look at my shopping sprees and made me realize that I dont need half the things that I buy. I was taught by chris that material things arnt everything.

  • Agree with the beliefs but not the method. He wanted to test himself but as with every test you still need to prepare. Take advantage of life's big & small adventures. They don't all have to be on a grand scale/cost a life's savings. A bike ride or walk with your child. Happiness is not possessing a thing - that is stupid. However, it is also stupid to go into an adventure w/o some plan and knowledge. Skydiving/freefalling sounds thrilling and should be experienced, but - wear a parachute!

  • ok dude was a great thinker i love his ideals but look at this there was a manual tram a quarter mile upstream from where he tried and couldnt cross a half mile downriver theres a bunch of shallow spots he couldve crossed the bus which is about twenty miles from the spot he tried to cross if he wouldve went ten miles north of the bus he wouldve walked onto the denali national park the dude didnt even have a map come on man again i agree with his ideals but atleast explore your surroundings

  • Beautiful movie and song...

He has the same birthday as me :]

  • I may not know the whole story, but the quote from this song on youtube, "His middle-class background and academic success masked a growing contempt for what he saw as the empty materialism of AMERICAN society.", ECHO's with those of us who still think the CONSTITUTION reigns in this country!! Revolution is NOW!! Not tomorrow.....NOW!!

  • :)....rlegear19....it was for you.....

  • wow this is almost word for word the exact same as wikipedia.

  • It is from Wikipedia. I knew nothing about this before Vedder got involved so I looked it up and decided to share his story along wtih Vedder's music.

  • Yeah its a great story and I love Vedder's music, pearl jam and his solo stuff.

  • The sound track is awesome and bonnie raitt and john prines song angel from montgomery

  • @evilurges86 did you no that studies have been done to show that wikipedia is 85 to 90% accurate where in enclopedia britannica is around 80% accurate britannica is always sited as being the most accurate but studies show that wikipedia is the most accurate online tool.

  • Beautiful movie and song....sigh....probably hasn't been a man born yet in the U.S. in the sixties...that didn't feel the urge...or wonder 'what if...I just took off...said no and goodbye to society's plan for me....'

Too bad 'Alex' died the way he did in the end...a little more education and preparation....who knows.

    Nice vid...thanx.

  • "...Happiness is only real when shared"

  • true

  • the best movie, one of the best ever made...."....rather than love, than money, than faith, than fame, than fairness..give me truth.."

  • word^

  • too bad that Sean Penn edited out so much of the truth.

  • hm, i didn'n know that.....

  • Yeah he should have went directly from the book!!! But i really liked the movie!!!!!

  • such an enlightening movie...a real insiration...thank you..

  • CHEERS thanks for sharing

  • Well done :)

  • the name of the song !? :-)

  • hard sun:-)

  • ya check out gordon peterson he wrote it and recorded it ,,,

  • Really nice

  • thank you for having this tells me more about his life clearly not like the book im reading about that i dont understand because of the flashbacks and everything

  • <333

  • Best video ive seen of that song. Very moving.

  • yeah its my favorite 2.

  • chris was a free soul and he became free finally he was some one who went for what he wanted. he was born free and died free and now he s free forever. bless his soul

  • increible

  • You may say he was selfish, and in fact he was when he started on his journey. But there's a quote I remember distinctly, "happiness, only real when shared." I feel that the journey had changed him significantly and that he was almost ready to shed some of his armor and return to civilization. But unfortunately he ate the wrong seed and died before he could do so.

  • Even at the end he wrote the note asking for help from other people and yet the irony is he never stuck around to help anyone else. Poetic justice really. Its the young minds that romanticize this guys life, the immature minds will distort the lesson and admire his commitment to "running away"...thats the danger. Even though most of us won't in any case, ah whatever, I'll see you all at Starbucks lol.

  • bullshit chris didnt stick around and help some1. remember the hipie couple when he met them they were prob gonna break up. then chris helped them get over it and back 2gether. he help the old guy get out of house. and dude just stop judging him. who the fuck are u 2 judge some1? really who is any1 to judge some1? thats the kind of shit he wanted 2 get away from. dont judge him cuz u dont know what he went through.

  • Not a bad guy but i stop short of crying for such a selfish individual. He bailed on life to go be alone like a hermit child. Heroes are the ones who show up, who commit to helping others and not serving just themselves. I'm sorry but thats all he did, serve himself. Left behind people who committed time, energy and resource to raising him from childhood and ultimately gave nothing back, just took and ran. Not very heroic to me.

  • really how is following your dreams selfish? the only thing that wasnt cool that he did was not talking 1 his sister. his parents thats a differant story.

  • talking 2 his sister my bad.

  • We are born to live and experience, to reason, to think, and to love, to overcome and come together. I've never realized so more than since my daughter was born. Perfect at birth. It is the freedom to be and to become that is the beauty of life. It is only through the experiences of pain that we understand the pleasures and joys we live.

  • Dude...I agree with u in every bit...I am a movie buff...I cried to glory in this movie loved every bit of it....Oh god why did he have to die in the end.....So much to learn n love.....Just not able to get over it....

  • If this song and power it evokes in the name of all god and of humanity doesnt move you..then nothing ever will.....god bless those lost souls who forever live up in heaven looking down on the big hard world

  • The movie is very powerful, I cried for him.

  • yeah i did 2.

  • yeah, but i didn't like emile hirsch playing him :S

after watching him in Alpha Dog, it just didn't fit the character

Jesus Christ man.. do you do this with every comment you disagree to?

Get out of the house lol.

  • Comment removed

  • but really by your reckoning how can u like him in alpha dog when he was in the girl next door? kinda hypocritical.

  • the type of character he played in the girl next door doesnt fit the character in alpha dog.

  • well i don't 1/5 of a fuck about Emile Hirsch.

I'm more of a Robert DeNiro fan.

Mean Streets, GodFather 2, Taxi Driver, Deer Hunter, Raging Bull, Once Upon a Time in America, GoodFellas, Casino, Heat.. ble bleh bleh

  • "I Hear you Paint Houses" is a movie Scorsese is working on about the life of Jimmy Hoffa, a true story about a hitman who worked in the mob, being played by Robert DeNiro.

i'm looking forward to it if it's half as good as "the departed" or "no country for old men"

  • Comment removed

  • it was allright, it just didn't have the brutality all the other mob films have.

  • i know how it all works, ive seen the soprano series about 16 times, goodfellas about 30 times and the godfather trilogy about 20 times.

  • Dude....I cried to Glory...for Him....N thought about life for dayz.....n still in doubt....why...We are born so many people suffer....why are we born...to do what?...

  • It is only when yuo lose everything, that youre free to do anything.

  • i miss chris i am his cousin tillie

  • are u really?? dont lie. im not saying u are.

  • My dream is to be as free as Christopher McCandless. I wish I could let go of everything and search for the truth. What an inspriration for all of us who wish to be free.

  • dmaradona10 go hiking man. u will feel free and alive. u should try it. but u have 2 be carefull cuz if u are hiking in the woods there may be bears or cougars or wolves. or u could just get lost. i would go hiking with another person. and always tell some1 that u are hiking and where.

  • great video but even greater meaning. caveman

  • yeah this video and song are awsome

  • R.I.P chris, supertramp. i hope your soul is wondering the alasken bush.

  • i'm sure his soul has gone way beyond the alaskan bush..the supertramp's journey sure didnt end in alaska!

  • well if he died in alaska his journey ended there. but really i hop is soul is waiting 2 make amends with his parents. but im sure is soil has gone beyond the alaskan bush. but i still hope is sould wounderd it 4 a little while b4 he went beyond it. cuz alaska is beautiful.

  • he has lived the life the human society has lived sline the beging of ma, free and alive!!!! we became a new type of man with the new technolog. he has died with more than most people will ever take with them when they die. and the only thing u can take with u wh u die is your memories nothing els. and we keep him alive here with his memor. and his way of life which is a care fre one and one of beaut.

  • i think theres a bit of chris in all of us. he choose that lifestyle every 1 to there own. for me the man done what ive wanted to do for years get up and go explore my country . because if you dont belive in this soiceity , politicans , being labeled. told what to do when to do it . we are mere puppets with the goverments hand right up ur ass . why am i still sitting here rambling on this computer and not out there cause am am scared. maybe 1 day hopefully not to faraway i will become FREE .

  • exactly the same here!

its weird thats always being my dream,to do what he did in the film.even the alaska part, ive always dreamed of running to alaska.

it seems as if society kind of holds you back from your dreams y'no?

  • man ukandolttowithkandoo ur comment is a damn good 1. i 2 feel the call of the wild. i 2 want 2 learn how 2 survife in the wild. 2 become completly free. free from all the hate, controll, judgement, all the negitiveity. the reason y i havent is fear. fear of the unknown fear of leaving my family so on. maybe 1 day i will lose my fear and become free and awnser the call of the wild.

  • i wounder who gave most of my comments the thumbs down?? i dont see why. i dont know what was wrong with them. but o well. 2 each his own.

  • I give you all the thumbs up I could ,because you're right.

  • i 2 ukandoitt have thought about something like u said in ur comment. ur comment why am i still sitting here rambling on this computer and not out there? i use 2 think about if i had met chris m and said that i 2 want 2 explore the wilds and the movie about him was just so good. i use 2 think he would take the dvd of into the wild out of my hands and just throw it on the growned and say then go. and say dont just watch something about it do it.

  • and i use 2 think the same thing when i was watching the movie not him telling me that. but y am i just sitting on my ass watching a movie and not out there explore being free. ive been thinking about awnsering the call of the wild 4 awhile now. into the wild just brought it 2 a head. the planet earth and blue planet series helped with it 2.

  • ukandoittowithkandoo u know what u can do?? well i dont know if u do this. u could start hiking. u will never feel as free as when u hike. i go hiking all the time and i love it. when i do i just feel so free and alive. free from all the hate and lives problems. it so peacefull hiking. with no sound but the wind and the russling of the trees and bushes. i like 2 hike up hills. and it makes u feel strong. cuz u get tired and hot. u should try it if u dont hike now.

  • yeah maybe i will we have some good moutains here am gonna go away for a month this time see how i get on. wish me luck

  • good luck ukandoittowithkandoo. be carefull mind ur footing. soft ground is easier 2 walk on then hard ground. u can lose ur grip on hard ground. and zig zag ur way up those moutains. it will be less steep and ull conserve ur energy. bring lots of water 2. eat something good 4 u 2 b4 ur hike. something with lots of protien. and have fun. be free and alive.

  • so ukandoittowithkandoo have u gone hiking yet??? ive been hiking it up b4 winter comes. i saw a bald eagle, 2 red tailed hawks, and some other two kinds of birds that i dont know what they are. it was awsome.

  • SUPER!!!!!!!! SUPERTRAMP!!!!!!!

  • the message i got from the movie is dont get stuck, do whatever makes you happy and just go for it! cut any string that holds you back (including family!) from your own happiness! FAMILY CAN BE YOUR BIGGEST BLESSING IN LIFE BUT ALSO YOUR BIGGEST CURSE. DONT LET YOUR FAMILY HOLD YOU BACK!

  • alexander supertramp lives on

  • Get a grip, now that's fine advice...the book 'Into the Wild' is worth reading

  • The book is better

  • People will sit in judgement on each other till the end of time..It seems to be part of our prison sentence..on Earth.Comments that personally insult are never objective & it only shows what is lacking in their own lives.

  • That's quite true.& there will be comment from every source of human anger, resentment, compassion, forgiveness & all manner of thought for some time.

  • Live as a grungy bum in a van in real life, and the middle class views you with disdain.

Live as a bum in a van after rejecting your well-educated & wealthy background first, and the same middle class idolizes you for it.

If Sean Penn had found this guy living in a van on his own deserted woods property, Penn would've probably called the cops on him.

  • u cant prove that man u cant so u dont know and u know what dude if u dont like it them shut up and dont watch the video i dont like the tv shows like flavor of love and rock of love and im not on some video about them talk n shit and if some1 wants 2 become a bum they can y u do care dont juge them ur 1 of those people that he tried 2 get away from, people that juge other people cuz they dont see eye 2 eye with them

  • and it wasnt cuz he rejected his well educated background that people look up 2 him its his philosophies like not leting things define u not leting the kind of car u drive or how big ur house is define who u are and what ur worth but whats inside u and what u have it in yourself 2 b that does

  • it was also how he found joy and happieness in nature the beauty of nature in just everything around him and how he found freedom on the road and dude if u had the parents he had fighting like that a dad that calls ur mom woman as a way 2 talk down 2 her and 2 hear that all the time u might do something like he did so untill u walk in some1s shoes dont juge them

  • and yeah he didnt write his family telling them he was ok he could of at least wrote his sister but he didnt yeah that wasnt cool it was fucked up 2 let them worry about him like that well u know what he is human people make mistakes we all do all of us and he isnt perfect dude every1 has flaws u me every1

  • people have idolized worse people way way way way worse like hitler warren jeffs the columbine shooters icp the list goes on u should complain about those people not chris m not alexander supertramp

  • that was wicked. i saw the movie in the cinemas ad i loved it. i hell wanna read the book and see what that is like

  • yeah i love the movie into the wild its my favorit movie whenever i watch it it makes me want 2 go hiking bad so then i do i hike up these hills with big ass rocks at the top of them

  • did you take the wording from wikipedia? just curious. It is a great video, keep up the good work!

  • Can someone answer two questions for me?

Where can I find the 20/20 episode about McCandless that is longer than the first 2 minutes.

What version of "big hard sun" is in this video?

  • he had it on his camera undeveloped when they found him it says it at the end of the movie there was a timer on it onbvioulsy so he set it the went and sat by the bus i understand the thought of this man so much i think im ready to leave home right now

  • hey i respect that and all but u gotta really really really reallyyyyyy know what ur doin if u go out into alaska man...it goes down to 60 below in some parts during the winter, i dunno how experienced u are with survival but if u are best of luck man

  • moloskis he didnt mix up the two plants he started to eat the seeds of the wild potato plant the books said nothing about the seeds being poisonous or not poisonous but the seeds are they have alkaloids in them to keep animals from eating them

  • in the movie it said under the sweet pea that it was ineadable when he ment to eat an edable potatoe root

  • yeah i go hike n all the time a friend and i found this little mini frozen waterfall that had 4 levels of ice sickles daggling off them it was so awsome thats what hike n is all about its cool cuz he was born in 68 i was born in 86 he graduated in 86 my moms name is virginia my older brother is named chris i was born in september thats when his sis took his ashes back

  • i found this old broke down car out lizared hunting once i didnt kill the lizareds just keeped them for like 4 days then let them go but u know thats cool i found a car he found a bus the bus he found was a million times cooler tho

  • when christopher macandalis went to start eating plants he got a potatoe root and a sweet pea pod mixed up and the sweet pea pod he ate but it was inedible...The poison that the plant gave off shut off his digestive system and he slowly starved to death...

  • GReat Great video really enjoyed it

  • GReat Great video really enjoyed it

  • Just read the book and watched the film twice in a week.

I'm hooked.I'm looking for anything i can find out about Chris.

He is an ispiration to us all. His words are timeless, and he'll be remebered along time after most of us.

His story will be told whether you agree with what he did or not.

To me he was a brave man who lived his dream.

God bless Chris McCandless, never to be forgotten.

Great video to whoever made it.

  • I have been trying to grasp why, after not been able to cross the river, he simply did not hike up and down looking for a way to cross, or perhaps wrait along side the river until it would reduce in some way? why go all the way back to the bus, which was 1 full days hike? And finaly, the note which he left on the door of the bus , which read SOS, stated he was "injured" and unable to hike out, what injury did he have?

  • I think after reading the book, he had eaten some poisinous wild potato seeds, and i think this is what he meant by 'injured'. He was basically starving to death.

When he did decide to leave, he was in good shape, yes he'd lost a lot of weight, but he was fit and healthy and had enjoyed his stay at the bus. When he saw that the river was uncrossable, he probably thought why not go back to the bus? he'd enjoyed it there and was self sufficient. Go back there for a while until the river drops.

  • Thank you, although i have heard that all toxicologist testing that was done on him, did not present anykind of poisoning.

  • Such a great man. Christopher McCandless' message will continue to touch people.Unfortuantely, His message would not have been so loud if he did survive. So respect the message as well as the man. People get so caught up in facts that they over look the true meaning. He only did what he thought he needed to do, to rid himself of the burden that society places on us. WE should all try to break that comfortable mould that we have settled for , and try being who we are uniquely.

  • he did return, he came back from the dead... he wasn't alive until he found out his own true happines and hes true fillings....

i guess you would rather live on your knees rather than die while standing... i gues... its the only way to understand this is getting free of our own narcizism.. as someone said... he smiled at his new fate... he found he didn't need anything to be happy, he only needs people, and the first person who must love you is yourself and once you get that you can love others

  • I can't prove this to you but I made a similar trip, for similar reasons in 96.I encourage everyone to do it but with some sense, not utter abandon. The knowledge that is gained is indescribable and worth the risk. He broke the chains the human race places on itself but was to naive or arrogant to know his own limitations before nature & God. Once you break from society it can never cage you again. Happiness isn't real if you're not around to share it...or something like that.

  • wow thats deep~ god bless you 4 letting your self wonder around gods pleasures of life

  • Thanks. It was great but remember... Without going out your door, You can know the ways of the world. Without peeping through your window, You can see the Way of Heaven. The farther you go, The less you know. Thus the wise man knows without traveling, Sees without looking, And achieves without ado. -Lao Tzu-
  • wow tht was a very uncalled and ungreatful comment so whats ur name lets go see u survive with a 22 soem corncchips a mechedi go on u ungreatful son of a bitch like recognize this

  • Someone once said, "You've gotta go through a lot of LIE to get to the F in LIFE". They were right but your mission should be to get to the "F" no matter what "society", "they", or whatever LIE is thrown at you. Fear no one or what they've created but always respect nature, after all you are only human. Oh, and remember..L ife I s E asy.

  • you know what ppl diserve to know how he died so what i told them hes my idol i wasnt makeing a god dame rude remark about him okay ass hole?

    thanks,

  • i love this movie its so good

  • great video i like it all the facts

  • world would be a better place if they had this guys philosophies...yeah he f'ed up and died, but hey ur in alaska by urself, it's a hell of a gamble...it's not about the results, it's about what he did along the way, death or life his philosophies are what america needs

  • YOU WIN!

best comment about Chris I've seen.

  • lol yeah man, i dunno genius is never appreciated in its own time...when the artificial world and the computer age and industry collapses sooner or later (cuz nature will deal us a bad hand sooner or later) no matter how much we think we have a handle on technology, everyone will need his philosophies in order to get thru it all and survive u know??

  • that's why I plan on studying philosophy in college. I don't wanna become a part of society.

  • dont blame ya man...all society will do is dull your soul

  • peace dude

  • peace dudet

  • lol thank you =)

  • your so welcome moloskis

  • =P yeah!
