I have more CDs and MP3 files than I will ever listen to, but it's nice to have variety. Most of my listening is done in the car either going places locally or on road trips. My music buying has gone down with my earnings, I'm sad to say... Hopefully that will all change in the months ahead.
I have 45GBs of music in my iTunes library alone & that's not all of it by any means!
What i like about mp3's is the fact that they take up so little space. I have boxes & boxes of CD's lying around. I have no idea if i'll ever listen to them again. But, i don't want to get rid of them :)
I don't buy any music anymore- I used to belong to a site that I paid membership dues to which was great because artists showcased there were not main stream. It got a bit too expensive though so I moved away from that. Brian has an extensive music collection (on CDs) and I have mega gigabytes on disc ...and Spotify!
You are so right about Napster. They changed the landscape forever.
That's my only regret withthe mp3 revolution. I think it's diluted the impact of albums. As you say, some of those albums from the past just had to be listened to from start to finish. Good times :)
I love Spotify. It's a great place to go to not only listen to your favourite artists, but to store them as well. I really like what Paulo Nutini is doing just now, just as I do with Kasabian, The Killers etc.
There's a great comedian/musical impressionist called Mrstevieriks whose channel was closed down, despite him playing all of the musical instruments on tracks. I suppose that was a copyright issue, but he's such a talent that it seems a shame. He's back with the above channel now though.
I have become used to purchasing downloads, but still buy a couple of CDs here and there. I really appreciate being able to purchase by the song, but at the same time I mourn the death of the album.... oh no... I feel a vlog coming on...
I do still buy CD's. But, that amount is decreasing all the time. Downloading is just so much easier.
I think the death of the album is pretty well imminent. That's a great pity. Especially when i think of all those great albums from the past. That's the problem though, they are all in the past. How many really great whole albums come out these days?
I still buy cd's but they tend to be from bands and ppl that i've been a fan of for a long time.
I have dragged myself in to the downloading age in the last year or so because some ppl's music isn't carried in stores where i live and not on amazon sometimes.
I do seem to do sort of like you are sayin and buy singles and old tracks that just pop to mind.
I think if the music shops were still around it would give kids more respect for the buying of music as going there was allways a treattome
The Internet does seem to provide far more choice than the average music store these days. That's the big advantage they have over the high street stores.
That's one reason why the sales of older music are doing so well.
I used to love browsing in the old style music stores. I think those days are gone now though :)
I agree on all points. But I think where I differ from a lot of the rest of you is that I refuse to let the record companies have any more of my money. And that comes from weathering the cost of one format change to another. From vynil to tape to CD... I hopped off that train by converting my CDs to MP3 files then selling off the CDs.
I'm not a big fan of the record companies either. But, they do provide an outlet for a lot of bands that wouldn't otherwise be heard, especially when it comes to publicity.
That is a double edged sword though. They do restrict some bands as well.
I'm with you on the constant replacing of my music when a new technology comes along though. Hopefully with the mp3 we have got to the end of that road? :)
I still buy cds and the downloading is something Im still trying to get used to. I have downloaded a friends album a while ago which he is an indepdent artist.
I have heard spotify and I heard its really good to check out from friends.
The copyright issues are improving with WMG sorted out a deal with Youtube which is good.
OK... The Teddy Bear is looking at me and creeping me out............

Don't worry, i'll have a quiet word with him & ask him to stop doing that :)

haha! Nice!
It's nothing personal, but I don't even know his name.... If he looked at me like that in my neighborhood... there might be trouble.. :)
Great video Andy! Thanks!

I have a pretty extensive collection as well. But, there's always something new, or old to listen to & buy!
I can't imagine ever getting a point when i stop buying music :)

I download hardly any music but I still buy CDs, used if its from WMG:-)
I miss the days of an album being a composition that is listened too from start to finish. Pink Floyd were amazing at that!
I listen to mostly old stuff on my MP3 player. I love being the DJ.

There's nothing like being the DJ is there?

Spotify is great isn't it? I just hope that it can survive. That is by no means certain though.
As we've both said. It allows you to try out new & different music, at no cost :)

The WMG deal with YT is a good omen. Maybe the music companies are starting to realise that they cannot live without the Internet these days? :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
oh yeah - I love it that I can purchase/download a single...
I used to listen more 'cause my last employ we could wear headphones, & iPod was perfect...
Thru YT I've had a boarder exposure to so-o much music (that I otherwise would not have been aware of) hence, spending more on music -
Recently read that WMG & YouTube have (FINALLY) reached an agreement...to take affect by end of year. wooHoo!

I think the Internet generally gives us greater exposure to new & different music. That's if you're willing to listen & explore.
I do believe the releasing of single tracks is the way that a lot of bands will go in the future :)
andymooseman 2 years ago
new music is not always recent music, I am still finding great music from the 70s and 80s.
although I confess over 75% of my playlist is old favorites.
Ranblv 2 years ago
So am i. I think my music buying is pretty evenly split between old & new music.
There's still plenty to discover :)
