haha, just had to find some gameplay with music :) damn I've played this a lot... Just listened to a remix by FeekZoid called "Platoon - The Tunnels (Apocalyptic mix)" check it if you're into retro music :)
The game was great. I played this game on the SNES when I was a kid. Then in about 2004 I found a C64 emulator. And I was like "what the hell?" The C64 version looks MUCH better than the SNES and you can't even compare the sound with the snes version because the music in that game on Commodore is just astounding. One of the greatest games ever. I can only compare this game to FarCry.
hahaha agree music still hang in my ear 20 years after ... i catch myself now n then whistling the tunnelmelody when workin... eaven thou i havent seen or heard it before today - thx for posting this
wicked. this brings back good memories. I remember one time I "pressed play on tape" , went on summer holidays and came back 3 weeks later and the fucker was still loading o_O
Only a short sequence in the Film, but a cool Level in the Game. I have utmost Respect for the programmer, who can make good Levelstyles out of Filmsequences...
My friends band are called Heresy. Yeah, they played down in the Cru a couple of times over the last year. Thier influences are the likes of Metallica,Pantera, etc.
Actually, the Cru is a great little spot to check out bands-the atmosphere there is great.
Didja ever listen to Machinae Supremacy? They're a rock band- whose secret ingredient is a sid sampler. So alongside the guitar riffs, they use sid samples- awesome.
Their rocked up version of the Great giana Sisters theme is brilliant!
Jeroen Tell was great, alright. Isnt he responsible for the amazing sounds that drove Turbo Outrun, and that classic loading theme to MYTH?
And,lets not forget Chris Huelsbeck,he of the terrific Turrican Tunes. I know that his work for that game was largely on the Amiga 500,but his score to Great Giana Sisters was brilliant!!
Then theres Tim Follin: I loved his soundtrack to Ghouls n' Ghosts, especially level 4. Fantastic game aswell.
Dare I say that this was quite possibly the best first-person shooter sections in a game, pre-Doom? I particularly like the way the crosshair realistically sways with the feet motions. For a game back thn, it must have been pretty hard to code that in.
On the music though, everyone knows the big 3 SID creators were always Rob Hubbard, Ben Daglish and Jonathan Dunn. I'm quite glad Dunn got this game to do, he done an excellent job on it.
Martin Galway - I remember his version of the Short Circuit theme in particular. Often at college, were I'm studying Games Development, if I'm doing a bit of progamming I have Lemon64 tabbed and chiptunes playing in my headphones while I work. Quite relaxing if you ask me. I have to do a game based around a side-scrolling platformer for part of my CA this year, I want Daglish's version of Stairway To Heaven in it as background music, but I' not having much joy coding it :/ either as WAV or MP3
You can see a complete walkthrough of Creatures on youtube itself-somebody posted it up. Fantastic game. The sequel was excellent too,but that concentrated more on the torture screens, and was more difficult.
The Turrican games were also the best c64 games. Brilliant blast-em-ups.
By the way man, your from Cork? Im from a town in co. Wexford-my friends band were playing in Cork itself tonight-in an Cruscian Lan!!
The LOUD synth at 2.11- yup, first time I heard that,I believe I jumped outta the seat,it was so out of the blue!! lol.
Id say one of my all time favourite c64 games was Creatures. Infectious platform levels, tricky puzzles to solve- the infamous, brilliant torture screens!- and fantastic all round playability and big bright graphics make it an all time classic.
Also, in the music department, there was Lightforce. A simple enough shoot-em-up,with a terrific score from Rob Hubbard. U have dat?
You've got a point regarding the Last Ninja 2 sewers level. But that particular track turns into a rocking riff near the end, doesnt it? Iv'e got the Last Ninja 2 sid soundtrack on cd,believe it or not! Tracks like the central park loader and the central park theme itself- timeless! And,they sound incredible when played on electric guitar-like great metal music! Nightbreed was an average game, but a terrific tune is heard after the first load and the titles arrive on screen. One of my faves.
Yeah, its cool to see the later levels. Funny how seeing things like this brings back a lot of good times to the mind. And the music!! I actually remember now, the first time I completed the first level, and as the tunnel stage loaded, the tunnel theme started playing. Those 2 haunting notes that fade in over the repeating riff at the start- brilliant. It still commands your attention with its stark eerieness.
Also,Nightbreed: Not the best of games, but it had a cracking intro theme.Ever hear it?
Legend. Great playing there. That was the first time I even saw past the tunnel level,I could never get past it when I used to play this game-kept getting lost and shot!
The music in that level itself was very dark and atmospheric-some of the best commodore tunes indeed.
I never got past this level on a real game with a real C64. I did have that one lightgun compilation where there were two levels of Platoon. This level rolled on by itself so I couldn't get lost and the shooting was done with the lightgun so it was much easier to shoot the enemies. That way I got through this stage and got to play the next bunker shooting level (and got through that also).
I tried to play my original Platoon about a year ago and was close to getting to the next level, but after I got the needed items and tried to find my way out the game crashed.
And yes, Blaze Out was the compilation's name! It was pretty cool as I never managed to beat the first level of Rambo 3 but this compilation allowed me to play the third level. Only after years passed and emulators appeared I was able to try the second level too.
I never made it even to the ladder :(

Fighting the Vietcong at night or inside their Tunnels were undoubtedly the two most frightening experiences of the entire war.
Although this part of the game was factually inaccurate.
The Vietcong Tunnels, in reality, were only big enough for crawling and did not have any of that stagnant water whatsoever.

yes you may indeed!
I was going to say the same, but i havent played operation wolf enough to compare the two.
It was a huge achievement for the c64, love the way you must read the map to navigate.
I'd have to add Matt Gray to that list of top composers, hes overlooked a lot, he deserves to be there for Last Ninja 2 alone!
Every track in it is quality.
Martin Galway is another guy worth mentioning, and possibly many more.

Hi man, great to hear youre studying game development!
You could try using the resid engine in your game, but that might be even harder to code!
I think youll have to upload that side scroller when its done, no matter how basic you may thing it is.
Wouldnt mind seeing it.

I love the waterdrop synth sound too, its fierce imaginative.
The loud synth that comes at 2:11 used scare the shit out of me as a child!
You can tell he wrote the track particularly for the level, he may have even played it first.
Actually....
The inensity and atmosphere of the track is extremely similar to The Sewers level in the Last Ninja 2 if you think about it!
