  • That's false chords at 2:23 ? And what's that thing like a mini tongue at 2:27 ? Is that the epiglottis ?

  • @Alexawrgren 2:23 is just vocal folds (which is kind of easy to see) and the distortion comes from overblowing, I guess you could call it. The floppy thing in front and below (in the picture) is indeed the epiglottis.

  • FAP FAP

  • lol i wanna see a vocal fry, im curious what it looks like.

  • @metallicatilldeathhh 2:29 to 2:50 is glottal fry variations. Also known as croaky voice.

  • Well I am glad I am different and use my false vocal cords.

  • holy shit, THANK YOU

I've wanted to see a laryngoscopy of ridiculous vocal techniques for years, you've made me very happy =D

  • ahh i needed to see this so badly

  • Great stuff Mal. I lost the ability to yodel at puberty and didn't miss it for a couple of decades. I can yodel whistle by flicking from a mouth sound to a combined mouth and throat sound. I feel like I don't have the power orthe stamina with the voice that I had a decade ago. The 51y voice wears out quickly and recovers slowly

  • hey , i realize you must be sick of me, but i found another downlode song , its no secrets, he does the voice at 2:49, sounds like popeye , maybe thats the approach, popeye

  • @stebolian Well, actually you've misread me, I think he's singing the high octave and distorting it so the low octave dominates. Listen to what he's singing before and after, like at 3:22 of Sweet Child of Mine. It's not vocal fry, it's more of a growl, a la throat singing, involving the false vocal chords. Did you check the part of my vid I referred to? The low fifth dominates in a similar way. Although, the "No Secrets" snippet you refer to sounds just down the octave to me.

  • @malwebb1 yer sorry, didnt read the first or second message properly, i can do that false cord sound and produce the two octaves, but its rather weak and i thought that his was more powerful than the rest of the song that his normal voice was singing. so it had to be a full voice and not false, any hints on how to get more power with the false. cheers, thanks for replying to my messages malwebb

  • @stebolian Well, I had a little play with it this morning and occasionally got a note or two to distort in that way (with the nice loud low octave), but really, that guy's got a pretty nutso instrument there in his neck.

  • @malwebb1 i am so close, i am singing falsetto, and also slightly changing my throat psitions and pushing a bit with the feeling of singing the low part and my voice was sort of cracking into another low octave, but its a little weak though, i think with practice i could develop the low octave, thanks so much for your feedback, im not giving up on this, that guy is 51, im 37, plenty of time, im also studying many books such as raise your voice and the rock n roll singers survival manual. cheers

  • @stebolian Rock on!

  • @malwebb1 i can now do the two octaves with full light headvoice, its weird how that low octave comes through, can only get better now i hope. sounds good for high screams, more punch

  • Please help, how does this guys vocal cords work, he gets this low sound with a high pitch sound mixed with it, its at 3:06 , 3:22. and 5:05 onwards, its clear that he changes from normal voice to this powerful voice when notes get to high, it is pure power, any idea, its on you tube, they are called downlode and they are singing sweet child of mine, please watch it and please advise, thanks stebolian

  • @stebolian Wow, that Downlode singer does have a thumping voice on him. OK, from hearing what he's singing before and after, I'd say he's actually singing the high part, but the distortion he's singing with is creating a disturbingly distinct low octave (they call it period doubling it the acoustics world and it's caused by the interaction of the false vocal folds (or ventricular folds)).

  • @malwebb1 , yer ive tried everything, the power seems like the low is the start voice, i kind of got the high tone with a steady note, but not the whistling he has, ive been studying it for over a month now and, i cannot see that power from singing high and getting a low sound, it has to be the first explanation you sent me, the low with some kind of whistle finding a cavity to resonate, helppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp

  • @malwebb1 i tried mixing using vocal fry and had no power what so ever , i have studied the vocal cords , and it is imposible to tighten an d loosen them at the same time, i ask him whether he was starting high or low, he said "a bit of both really", and " i guess i used to sing it falsetto when i was young and just developed it ", i need to talk to him over a beer, and get him to start it and show me slowly what he feels when he starts to do it, or just keep wrecking my voice box trying,

  • @stebolian There's a similar thing in this video of mine (at 3:18 and then 3:42, where the distortion is adding a 5th below), but it's nothing near as befuddling as the Downlode guy. There's a chance he's singing the low octave part, and the way he's distorting it is bringing out the 2nd harmonic so strongly it sounds like someone doubling him up the octave, but I'm pretty sure it's the first explanation. It'd be curious to ask him what he reckons is going on. Hmmm. Nice one.

  • I've looked through a few videos and this one seems to be the first to really show the difference between falsetto and modal voice.

  • @gilgameshdk Well, I'm glad I could help!

  • 3:36 LOL

  • Can't get over how much it looks like an orchid!

  • That's a rather awkward orchid...

  • Holy freaking freaky. But very informative, I was hoping YouTube would have some footage of the differences between falsetto and chest/modal voice in action, and I wasn't disappointed. Thanks for uploading this! And bravo for enduring it.

  • Dude, this is creeping me out. Looks like a facehugger jumped on my face and tries to sing me a lullaby.

  • How did you do that with that thing down your throat?

    How did you not gag?!

    Awesome vid :)

  • Didn't you notice it going into my nose? It doesn't make you gag so much then (and I edited out the gaggy bits!)

  • Yea, I saw it go into your nose, but it's still going down your throat! lol

It would make me gag instantly lol

  • ein männlein steht im walde :D

  • You should post some videos on how to do ALL of those sounds :)

  • You must be the only person in the world to be flown to another country to have your larynx photographed while sideways yodeling and throat singing... he he

Are they going to publish their findings anywhere and tell us what they make of these weird sounds that come out of your throat? :)

  • fantastic! interesting stuff!

hope you're coming back to the port fairy folk festival next year!

  • I can but apply and hope
