  • I know how you feel, mostly ALL of my favorite bands are from the 80's, I'm right now 16 yrs old, Its not fair,

but consider this, If all the fans of the police are from the 80's then there will be no generation that will love this band, maybe thats why we were born too late! Someone has to love this band after that generation other wise its just like Pop music or somthing! :P (*_*)

  • @PurpleBlueHaze

Good to hear this. With all the crap that is produced today under the chapter of "music" I thought the entire younger generation had lost its taste for good music somehow. You are proving the opposite.

  • Well thank you, I thought I was born too late, but then I met other people my age that loves this music, and I realize that we were born too late for a reason, I enharited part of my mother's music taste! Thats how I found out about 'the Police' , I will teach my children one day on how important it is to always respect the genius music there is. Even though it isnt so called "Fresh! " :P

I just hate it when they call 80's music "Dinosaur Music" >:(

  • So jazzy yet skanky.

    Love it.

  • You're right, marc93700...Stewart is very good...

  • Fuck Stewart on this song lol, (Although the snare into the chorus is one of the most epic of all time)

Sting absolutely rocks harder than any bassist ever with that baseline.

  • Screw that - the person playing the cow bell at 1:52 makes the song.

  • Actually, that would be a cymbal, an 8" Paiste 2oo2 bell to be exact.

  • What the hell? Stwearts one of the greatest drummers of all time and always will be!

  • crazy song, i love that drummer!! yeahhh

  • Today's music isn't political anymore! We NEED that awareness today, a battle cry for our country's freedom which is slipping past us everyday. Oh BTW U2 is a big fucking sell out and I hate Bozo, uh i mean Bono.

  • Waaaaay Ahead of thier time..even the.Look at US now.. A Material World,no doubt about it

  • Worlds always been a Material World.

  • I like this song. You have a better video of this song than the one I have. Why can't bands make awesome songs like "Spirits in the Material World"?

  • what year please u-tubers?

  • December '81 - Ghost in the Machine

  • haha what my dad did was right too :P since 5 my dad has been listening to the rolling stones , clash , the kinks , the beatles .. and i have fell in love with it :P i hate the music these days... a bunch of homo sexual guys singing about girls how original...

  • you did not like it....

    kiss my grass punk

  • yeah!!! todays music is garbage its my generations music but it sucks i love classic rock and specially 80s its downright awesome!!!!

  • Funny you would say that. I was born in the early 70s, grew up in the 80s, during which I loved music from the 60s and 70s. In the late 80s, my high school years, I thought that most of what was coming out was pure trash; it was all hair spray metal and Milli Vanilli-cheese-pop. It begs the question: has music been getting worse over the decades?

  • yeahh i know , i wish i would have been around in the 60's and 70's

  • today's music is all about the cult of personality and making money while dumbing us down.

  • Good for you guys. And your kids!!!

  • Ahahahah. How old are you ?

  • my sons are 11 they listen to queen & bon jovi not todays rap & garbage music.

  • my daughter is 5 and i let her listen to this kind of music so she can hear what music is suppose to be not the crap of today ...

  • thats what my dad did, and it works! im a 13 year old guy and i hate the modern pop today, but i love 70s and 80s music, like steely dan, police, rush, judas priest, iron maiden, and all the other stuff that people should love today :)

  • at 1:43 when sting's playing the keyboard, the pitches that we hear don't match the notes that he's playing... he's playing a E, but really he's supposed to be playing B...

  • Isn't that just indicative of recording the song in a studio and then the band being filmed after the fact for the video, lipsinking, etc?

  • 80's music is the number ONE forever..! this is one great song .(.Powerful Sounds..!! )

  • The music is great going back from the 80's to the 50's. If the band isn't from that time, they aren't as good.

  • I grow up with this music.

    What about music today ?

  • music sucks for today, simple as that . as for me this stuff is before my age and generation yet im connected with this stuff more than anything put out today.

  • Such a great song...! This sounds are Amazing...!!

  • this song exudes coolness.

  • Love this shit.

  • no words truer said!!! we are Spirits in this material world!!!! can't wait to go where my spirit belongs!

  • Sooo Good! Soo True!

  • this is the old version of the song

  • what an awesome album. But all of their albums are awesome.

  • I love this song.

  • very good wizard 7

  • yeah the police rock!

  • anyone notice how much lower sting's vocals are mixed on this album, ghost in the machine?

  • no actually

  • They're actually really creative. More than most popular groups.

  • have no faith in constitution! there is no bloody revolution!

  • OK, it's got a cool bass line and all.

    But.

I sat with tablet and pen and counted the lies. Each time he sang, "We are spirits in the material world," I made a vertical mark. Except each multiple of 5 -- then I made a diagonal thru the previous 4 vertical lines. I got up to 20, but there may be more because the song seems to have been cut a bit short here.

We are not spirits in the material world. We are material in the material world. Don't be misled by the excellent musicianship.

  • ok but what is the point you are trying to make?

  • "ok but what is the point you are trying to make?"

We exist in the physical world, not a spiritual world. Our bodies are made of the same elements as other life forms and non-living things. Our brains can achieve wondrous things, but there is no profound distinction in our elemental components from everything around ourselves.

I define *spiritual* broadly enough to include not just the religious sense, but atheistic and agnostic notions of secular humanism as well.

  • we are spiritual because we think...

  • Your thoughts are caused by the electro-chemical processes of your brain. Your brain is an organ in your body. When sufficient neural activity occurs, consciousness arises.

  • Quantum Physics, this Science Delves into the smallest realm, What is inside Atoms? (The smallest pieces of matter) Well Quantum Physics tells us that the atom is NOT SOLID..

You, me, the computers, the tables, chairs, the floors, everything is made of PURE energy, ...NOTHING is actually solid, that is the illusion of our senses, so sting was closer to the truth than u may think kenp3L :)

  • Just remember a good alchemist keeps secrets. Some things are not meant for them to know.

  • that bass is crazy good. One of the best ive ever heard

  • YES! YES! YES!

  • i agree, sting is actually pretty good

  • I found that the bass line is rather easy to learn if you play bass. You just need some finesse. The verse goes like so: A C C C A G G A E G *repeat*

  • I forgot all about this song. Its true that we are spirits in the material world. Crazy that today I actually have to debate this simple fact with atheists.

  • i'm going to have to agree with 1pod03, i could listen to this song over and over!!!!!

  • not the album version

  • You're right, but still good.

  • Y ooooooooooo

    Y ooooooooooo

  • is it just me or is the base really loud in this clip

  • the bass actually has the melody in this song. I know that is weird but thats what makes the police good

  • nice bed time story but dont wpam the forums kid its a cardnal sin

  • wow that bass the best

  • this song is the best ever, i have listened to it 1,000 total in my life and i am still not tired of it and never will be

  • dam..this song is so dope..

  • stewart copeland is awsome

  • i totally agree

  • I totally jammed to this tune when it appeared on MTV in 1981!! I was hypnotized by the lyrics.... Sting was the ultimate shit then...

  • not much has touched him since really...I remember being there when MTV first went on the air - Duran Duran, Police, Planet P, Adam Ant, those were the days.

  • im waiting 4 the stolen generation2 stand up black or white dont matter2 me cause both suffered da same so both black2 me

  • this is a great song, Stewart Copeland is a great drummer!

  • no doubt

  • Comment removed

  • a pop singer with a great voice and a good thesaurus can't beat a Vodoo child!! that's the intelectual blue collar tarted up version let's not exagerate!

  • i luv this song.

  • love the bass & sax in this one, one of my 2 fave police jams along with king of pain

  • jimi hendrix covered bob dylan's "all along the watchtower", did it so well that dylan started playing on an eletric guitar too.

  • timelines off bud

  • plus another thing i've heard singers that are like,if they do their own stuff they sound awesome if they do other peoples stuff they suck the beatles and elvis were the only ones that could do other peoples material and it sounded better for example i've heard sting do bob marley and it suonded like shit! and what about little wing hendrix sings it way better than sting even though he's got half the voice. what about a crooner he can sing anything imagine sinatra singing spirits ha...ha...ha..

  • I like Sting's version of Little Wing better :p

  • imagine like a guy singing in a low d tone like many bands today and goin "woah! the is no political solution" as he gargles on his own spit!! and screams like a dog in agony and the band could still be ptaying the same thing! would that still be a great song? this song is all in the voice believe me!

  • first of all i ain't on nobody's nuts and secondly that the song is great is besides the point but if the singer hasn't got a great voice you can take your great band and shove it everybody now days thinks they are singer and songwriter and the net is full of all these great singers and songwriters but nobody makes the grade and it's not all effects So internet musicians union my ass ok!!! now that you've pulled your finger out of your arse don't you feel better!?!

  • you guys are talking about two completely different things these are songs if it wasn't for stings voice you'd have nothing that's why there is so much space cause his voice is the most important ..jaco is a completly different thing altogether, sting probably came up with the melody first or was that good enough to come up with the music and then put a great melody on top give this song to another ten singers and it will sound like crap! melody guys something today's muso's know nothing about!

  • Or you could get off of Sting's nuts and realize that the entire song is great because of the entire band.

A Job well done, something todays Youtube musician critics know nothing about?

    :D

  • the first line says it all!!!

  • Rockstar9739, have you ever heard of victor wooten or jaco pastorius? They are both amazing bass players with ridiculous sound and technique. Listen to them and tell me that Flea is still the best in the business!

  • excellent bass part

  • when i was little, I thought he said I stare INto my Cereal Bowl!!

    LOL

  • GREATTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!

  • I love a lot of guitar driven songs, but sometimes it sounds so good doing a basic percussion and having the bass be the lead.

  • yeah sting rocks on the bass although sorry but Flea is the best in the buisness and when it comes to heavy metal cant do much better than shavo

  • You are out of your mind! HA HA.

  • il miglior giro di basso mai sentito di tutti i tempi!!

the best bassplayer in all of time

  • Mmmmm... forse il secondo....quello di Walking of the Moon fulminò pure Gil Evans....

  • Great music, political and spiritual commentary.

  • very talented group and god id shag sting!!!!

  • Noi siamo spiriti in nel Mondo materiale...

    Soggiogano gli umili

  • omg are they 4 real????

the bass is the best i've ever heard in a song

you are the best ''the police''

  • Damm Tje Police is the beste of the best solida I love it

  • bass volume is perfect.

  • Right on.

You cant even hear bass in songs nowadays.

  • HHMMM....the Bass is WAAYY up in this mix....coincidence? I think not. Awesome song though. AWESOME ALBUM. GREAT BAND!! Damn.......why cant they stay together and make more music!!!?? Piss me off !!

  • The police are the best band I've ever seen live! I hope they tour again.

  • wow ... i've listened to this song a lot and never really picked up on that sweet bass line. Sting's just gotta be front and center haha.

  • WOW, what a killer video! Man, I've always LOVED the bass-line in that song. Just incredable. Thanks for posting

  • hear, not here, you hear music, but you are neither here nor there.

Yes I agree, some of the best bass lines you'll hear in any Police tune.

  • About the most incredible Bass playing you'll here in any Police music.

  • Yarg! I watched this video all of yesterday. It's an amazing song! X3

But then I had a dream about Sting last night. XD It was epic.~

  • This is a great song to listen to during the summer.

  • One of the baddest, catchiest bass lines ever.... just intoxicating.

  • Stewart Copeland :)

  • Seems as if Sting is going through a snow storm in his nose in this vid. Great song, though=)

  • there is no political solution to our troubled eveolution . . .

  • sting is so cool no one can even explain it.

  • I saw this in houston when it first came out. it was so great it would be described as a word there is no word for.

  • If this music was released today? I doubt it would. It would get sidelined as "niche" music and be proclaimed as non viable and un marketable. I mean, c'mon a reggae/ rock hybrid? What's with the lyrics? Too much "meaning". Does this "Sting" fellow date Britney?

  • What a Putz.

  • I doubt Britney could make it through Sartre.

  • It would be "unmarketable" in a similar way that books are less marketable than movies. I bow to your sarcasm. Fortunately for those who know, some of the most important music isn't marketable. No pearls before swine.

  • Yes, musicians had bigger brains and created music that was commercial and meaningful. And the intelligent bands of today are very unmarketable (have Radiohead gone Platinum? I don't think so!)

  • I'm pretty sure Radiohead has gone platinum on almost all their albums.

  • ...

Well, it's not like they sell half as many albums as, say, Eminem.

  • Agree mate, agree, even the best bands of today would be mediocres in the 80's.

  • This would be good music if it was released today. It stood the test of time.

  • love the bassline

  • Sting played a 1951 Fender Precision. Very funky.

  • I love that bass sequence in the keyboard solo mostly. very cool.

  • nice

  • My FAVORITE band!!!
