Gosh what a surprise. You pet the cat while he's asleep. Cat's fine until the petting becomes too vigorous, so he bites you. "Lay off." Worst thing to do is to continue playing with him with your hand. Stop moving, and he'll lose interest. BTW, the back feet business is good old cat genetics. It's what their completely wild ancestors did when they captured something: kick at the belly of the prey until the innards come out. That's what he hopes he's doing to your hand!
This is love biting. Cats will do this sometimes when you're petting their bellies in a place they particularly like. They trigger into a mode where they think they're a kitten again, and are tussling with a fellow kitten. You can distinguish this behavior with the kicking motions. If a cat was pissed off, he/she would bite and make a retreat. Few cats are fully confrontational with humans when there's open ground to flee.
@ChipNoir they dont think they are kittens again. Its more of bonding, where the "owner" and cat have together discovered triggering points together. How to react - cat - and human. Some people would call it a reflex, its more of a habitual behavior.
so i was playing with my cat like this, and she got real rough and latched onto my hand like a python or something.
she left me with 4 infected puncture wounds on the fleshy part of my palm right below my thumb, it swole up like a baseball within a few hours. very nasty and hurt like a bitch for about a week!

that was 4 days ago, im just now able to type with my hand, thats how bad it was.
Reaching into a cat's face with an open hand is perceived as threatful, the cat only expresses a warning with meows and soft bites. Meanwhile, the cat is unaware if it hurts you. Approach your cat with a closed hand, away from its eyes.
My cat bites me too! A LOT! he is chasing me around the house and jumps on my leg and starts biting. Also, when i sit to watch TV he jumps on my and starts licking my hands and then starts biting! :)) I haven't neutered him yet... I have an appointment with the vet tomorrow but I guess this could be the reason! LOL :))
You can watch him by simply searching for Scott the Ginger Cat
He bites me similarly to what he does with his toy in the second video.
My cat is a male, about 5 or 6 yrs now, you can tell its supposed to have access outside its built like a machine yet such a cute face, and it yelps during the night, not been neutered, had it since 6 months if i remember correctly. When he gets all close and cosy and acts like its loving being patted and stuff it will go for me out of nowhere, and its teeth are damn sharp!! its made me bleed many times, I don't understand it, help?! he has a really hi pitched meow too. I dunno what to do wit it
I have a cat too. His name is Banshee. He bites me when I rub him on the stomach. The difference between your ferocious kitty and Banshee is that your cat screams when he bites you and my cat doesn't. Banshee even bites me when I carry him. When Banshee bites we give him helmet head (which is putting his hand on his head) and burrito time (which is wrapping him with blankets on my bed.)
Yeah, that's def. play-biting. My cat Drebin does that too. He'll wrap himself around my arms, bite and scratch a little. But then once one of my fingers ends up in his mouth, he'll just look at me and stop.
It's obvious the cat is just playing, he is just play-biting. If it was genuinely distressed then it would be biting down hard on those fingers, whereas you can see he just nips them.
no man he isnt biting his playing! my cat does that too, because...if he wants to bite you wouldnt hawe 10 fingers and you can se by the cats legs that his just playing...as far as i know..:)
My cat does that too sometimes (even when I'm trying to sleep in the middle of the night), but she's sweet most of the time. She does that kicking thing too, but she doesn't take out her claws. I think she needs a kitty friend to play with, so I'm going to adopt another cat soon. Maybe she'll play rough with him instead of me.
Whether the cat was playing, or was saying simply f*** off, it's definitely not trying to hurt you. You would tell if it's trying to hurt you with just one bite or a scratch.
My cat bites wen i pet him :( Its really BAd! He will even draw blood. But He also sleeps with me and idk why. He is mean and lkes to bite . one time he even bit my freind. I felt SOOOO BAD! but hes cool.
That, Matey, is a cats way of telling you to fuck right off! It was pretty much reasonable with you, by God.
Fuck off tablet number two usually comes with a gattling gun attack from the buisiness end; and a MEANINGFUL bite! How would you like to be woken up in the middle of the night for no apparent reason? You Pleb!
When your cat bites or scratches, you should encourage it by "playing" with it and not yelling NO!!! It now thinks that biting and scratching you during playtime is an acceptable behavior. Next time it does that, yell NO!!! firmly. If it continues, keep saying NO!!! really loud like it hurts you and spray it with water or throw a ball to make it fetch.
