Haha been there! I was using a 4000lb WLL hand winch to relocate a disk tiller (a video I posted) and basically stressed it out. I just bought a 8000lb hand winch and once I started cranking, it was beautiful! Just google harbor freight and type in haul master. I'm definitely using it for self recovery!
@byoungizzle it's just a cdn tire model...probably only a 2000lb rating or so...i did stretch it a little while pulling. Would love to find one of the old hand winches that came with the land rovers. They had a nice long handle and a pretty high tonnage rating. I have seen people also use their hi-lift jacks as a winch. pretty neat trick.
@FOXYKAT6 I'm not sure if they're the same as to what you're thinking (probably not) but check out the Wyeth Scott "More Power Puller". 6k dead lift rating, and super long handle. I never leave home without mine.
@dragonvue09 see reply to nirvana...same applies... and the road was actually a farmers lane way with some deep holes..i broke through the ice and had no wheels touching ground...was sitting on the frame
nothing wrong with toyotas either..used to have 1
@nirvana3134 not any more... i rebuilt the top end of the motor and reset the timing, added a leaf to each set of springs with more arch, put in a battery with 950 cca instead of the flashlight battery that it had when i bought it...... it's a beast now :)
The area you were in reminded me of an area that runs between hwy 99 and powerline road that was closed about a yr an a half ago, a jeep like your''es could get around the roadblock they put up and thats what made me think of that area, as to areas for wheelin I don't really know but if i come across something I'll send you a message.
@zam200864 close enough... niagara falls/ chippewa area. Only 40 mins to Hamilton. A block would have definitely helped...but putting an extension on the handle isnt recommended. You start to exceed the designed levels of force on the metal parts... I already bent the hell out of one before this unit.. We just lost one of our last few offroad spots down this way. Sounds like you might know some trails on your end???
i had mr bronco 2 stuck and i tried to use one of these to pull it out and ended up bending the fingers that spin the spool (mind you it didnt have a pulley so i was putting double the load on it)
so the next day i went out and bought a portable electric winch that has probobly saved my ass over 10 times already
hand winching is too much work when you can just push a button
I am 6'1" 180 lbs.... the winch cost me 29 bucks at canadian tire.. tow rope 50 bucks. On a scale of 1-10 on difficulty I would say getting it out was a 6. The jeep was resting on the leaf springs, so I was dragging it across the snow. They are truly a life saver if you are alone, and can't yet afford a power winch. just make sure u have lots of tow rope as the lever hoists only come with about 10 feet of cable. Where do u live? we could always use more trucks to wheel with :)

I would burn this worthless jeep. Sounds like a piece of shit and stuck on a fairly decent road way. I would go and get a toyota.

Looks like an area between Hamilton and Brantford just off hwy 99 ?
Looks like a handy thing to have, might it make it a little easier on ya if you were to incorporate a snatch block with your kit?
