  • Corey, great analysis and interesting contention: George has gone awry partly because he has nobody to hold him accountable.

  • He can do whatever he wants but he have to expect to get hated for it. Every artist expects critism if they don't they are stupid. As for changing his original work, I think that is wrong and should not be allowed. He removed work from the first movies that 100'sof people helped craft and even got academy awards for, so does he remove them from the credits if their work is gone? Add credits to a movie after the fact 30 years later? Credits:Hayden as darth vader in return of the jedi...That is F*

  • If star wars original movies were made according to GL's vision it would have just been another flash gordon movie and no one would remember it.

  • @MyHirogen It was a flash gordon movie, and a Seven Samurai movie etc. It was his vision of all his influences rolled into one. He's just a different person now then a young kid out of film school with nothing to lose.

  • @Rambo28 I think he had a great vision, he wanted space action but because of limitations he had to have a good story to lean on between the few effects. Once he could CGI everything he could finally fulfill his true vision, effects with no substance.

The more I learn the more it becomes obvious to me that George Lucas is an idiot who had a fluke.

  • well maybe if George Lucas started with episode 1 first inside of episode 4.people would have felt differently. But then again in before the 1977 opening he didn't have much in then way of big money like some of the other movies did. If i remember correctly from one of those documentary's Lucas even scraped the original film that was to be shown long before 1977 for the one we all know and love today.

  • @Blue2Zero We can say what if this happen or what if that all we want, but the truth is a story teller is the one telling the story, and is the "GOD" of that story. If you love Star Wars like I do, it shouldn't matter to much that there are downs in the story cause lets face it every story has one or more. So just except it and move on. Enjoy the extended story line!

  • Nice hair Corey

  • Ive got a lovely bunch of coconuts :3

  • Corey, you have beautiful eyes.

  • My answer to the question.... Its a rough question. typically i would say the story teller has all rights. But in this case, no. Not simply because of the history behind SW, but because of all the history that GL himself has acknowledged that has been written by fans/authors.

    The expanded universe changes all.

  • I for one, hate the prequels. But my main problem, is that the clone wars cartoon canceled out Karen Travis' clone commando books. Seriously? Those were great.

  • Corey, the deepest question is who controls to that have the control?

  • The clone wars show is a heresy.

  • ITS JUST A FILM (there i said it)

  • blah blah blah

  • A story teller can't tell us a story that we want to hear, that would be to predictable and cause issues. THey did that with Yoda fighting, the fans wanted to see Yoda fight, but he should be so powerful that he doesn't need a lightsaber. But he can't tell us a story that he wants to tell us. That got us Episode 1. You have to have a middle ground. A story that you enjoy to make, but the people will enjoy hearing. It's a hard line to walk.

  • @ArodWingfoot No, a Jedi needs a lightsaber no matter how powerful he is, really..

Having Yoda fight with a lightsaber was practical, and made sense.

"Strong am I with the Force...but not that strong." - Yoda, Return Of The Jedi

  • @ForeverEmunah He is 900 years old. And strong in the force. It's been retconned by most fans that even though he may not be as strong as Luke in the force that his age and experience would more than make up for it. Plus mind explaining how a 900 year old guy who needs a cane to walk around can flip and twirl like it's going outta fashion?

  • @ArodWingfoot Yes, the Force.

But he isn't so powerful that he doesn't need to rely on a lightsaber - by their nature, every Jedi does. And it's meant to be that way.

  • @ForeverEmunah Not the jedi are meant to rely on the force but throughout all the movies, many video games, and many books they say that the lightsaber is only a tool. They are trained to hold on to it like none other, especially in Obi-Wan's saying "This weapon is your life" but they train the Navy seals in the same way because the best way to keep living when people want you dead, is to kill them first. Also if Jedi need a lightsaber, explain how Obi-wan beats grievous

  • @ArodWingfoot "Strong am I in the Force - but not that strong" - Yoda to Luke, RotJ.

That, from the original trilogy, pretty much sums it up.

Jedi like Yoda, are powerful in the Force, but they can only accomplish so much with it. There are gaps, and the lightsaber is meant to aid them in battle, to help fill that gap, you could say.

Obi-wan beating opponants through random luck is a running gag through-out the series.

It's supposed to parody his remark in A New Hope to Han Solo

  • @ForeverEmunah You sure? You know it couldn't just be Yoda being humble? Again 900 years old. He should be wise enough to stop a fight without grabbing a saber. Either by convincing the other side to back down or his knowlegde in the force.

Thats the point, Yoda should be so smart that he has found a way to brigde the gap without it.

But you are saying they are need it. So which is it, them getting lucky, or the force?

The failing of the Prequels was No Han Solo

  • @ArodWingfoot It's them being mere-mortals, like everyone else.

It was part of the central message of both trilogy's - people are people and can't control everything - who turns evil and good; lives or dies. Some things are up to other's choices and fate.

Jedi can see the future in glimpses, but they can't control the outcome, like Vader tried to.

If Yoda were powerful enough, there would have been no Jedi Purge, to begin with.

  • @ArodWingfoot But he is merely a powerful, wise, Jedi who needs his lightsaber, just like everyone else.

And like everyone else, he was ultimately consigned to the Will of the Force.

  • @ArodWingfoot They wanted to show Han as a little kid in Episode III - though it would have conflicted with earlier stories about him, and the way he was to be shown, was unflattering at best, so they decided not to.

I didn't love the prequels overall, either. I mean, they were somewhat good in certain places. But it could have been better.

  • @ForeverEmunah You miss my point. They needed a Han solo as in a character to point out "This is stupid" Like Han Solo did. They didn't need to have it be exactly Han Solo, but they needed a character to do that.

If I meet someone who loved the prequels I may shoot them in the knee. You know, check out the Down In Front commentaries for Star Wars. They explain this all in great detail.

  • @ArodWingfoot "You miss my point. They needed a Han solo as in a character to point out "This is stupid" Like Han Solo did."

That was probably Obi-Wan most of the time, this time around. xD

"If I meet someone who loved the prequels I may shoot them in the knee."

:/ That's sad; you seem like a nice guy.

  • @ForeverEmunah Obi-Wan didn't point out how stupid it was. There was alot to point out too. Like Mace Windu saying they can't fight a war even though they have so many jedi that they can send them to what could only be viewed as a minor trading dispute in Naboo. He didn't point out how stupid it was that they couldn't find the sith even though "The dark side surrounds the chancellor." And he never shot someone under the table.

Nice guy with a hatred of Lucas raping my childhood.

  • @ArodWingfoot Hey I feel you.

I thought Lucas raped Childhoods, and Starwars, too.

Maybe you are right - maybe they did need more of the type of comical reflief Han Solo could bring.

Could you tell me where the last quote is from though? The one about the dark side and the chancellor?

I remember it might be from Episode III, but not sure.

    Good points.

  • @ForeverEmunah That too.

The last quote was from I episode 3. Mace says it.

How about this. As a kid watching SW I always thought Jedi would be like Ninjas. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @ArodWingfoot Yeah, in retrospect, it was kind of stupid that even when Mace pointed out the Dark Side surrounded Palpatine - and, after they had already been informed that a Sith Lord had infiltrated the Senate, that they hadn't suspected Palpatine.

Though, that may have been due in large part to the fact that the Jedi had grown arrogant and self-righteous, as Palpatine would later state.

  • @ArodWingfoot In the novel, Labyrinth of Evil, they suspect that the Sith Lord may have infiltrated the Senate Guard, but they never thought the infiltration could go as high as the Supreme Chancellor himself, without their knowing about it.

Well, when I saw the OT as a kid, I thought the Jedi seemed very Knight-ish, and then later they definitely seemed like a cross between a Shaolin Monk and a Samurai. Very skilled, indeed.

  • @ArodWingfoot If you like stories and characters like that, you should really check out a book called "Dune".

It has some similar elements, and actually the story for Star Wars came from Dune and was the main inspiration.

That story has warriors called Bene Gesserit, who have abilities similar to Jedi - you may really like it. :)

  • @ForeverEmunah Heard of it, havn't read it, but my sister just ordered the book, from ( i think Amazon) so I plan to read it once it gets here. (Should be in on Monday.)

  • @ArodWingfoot I hope you enjoy it, and it's been a pleasure talking to you. :)

  • George Lucas is the one who created the magic of Star Wars, how would you feel if someone said you are doing your job wrong when your not? Leave him the hell alone you stupid ass people.

  • What George Lucas does isn't telling a story. He created a universe separate from our own and guided by different but very specific rules. I don't think George Lucas minds if we create our own saga, we just have to follow his rules. George Lucas could be likened to the best DM that has ever existed, if you look at it. He should be allowed some eccentricities at the very least.

  • I believe a storyteller should have the right to tell the story as he wants. Its no fun when you have all kinds of things to say and people try to hold you back. But when you say one thing, and just a short while later contradict it, change it, or add something to it that really doesn't belong there, that's when you cross the line. The originals were hurt by the changes and the prequels changed so much of the story that it was annoying. It wasn't necessary, and that's that.

  • Honestly, this is such a load of mindless banter. It's very simple. For the original films George consulted with Spielberg & Coppola, for the later prequels he consulted his children. The films are simply different films for a man at a different time in his life! Let go!

  • You know I was thinking about this for a while now (15 hours) it's actually really screwed up, I saw the 1997 version of star wars when it came out on VHS while I was living in America and it was awesome like the best thing I had ever seen I even watch the boring documentary (as a 5 year old give me credit) of Lucas talking about all the changes and despite all this, the movie I had just watched was Star Wars. It was not until now that I actually feel robbed.

  • Knights of the Old Republic and The Old Republic is better than the whole star wars movie series.

  • good interview, but he is wrong to say Lucas has never been accountable, he had executives and studio bosses to deal with on Empire and four features before that.

  • a story teller should tell his own story, not pander to those who can't get it together to make up a story for themselves, Lucas did the right thing. The brilliance of Jar Jar Binks is that he makes the Ewoks look cool.

  • The author can write whatever he wants, and sell whatever he wants,as long as he's willing to throw away his entire career doing so. Should they allow the fans to get what they want? YES,but do they always? no,not so much. The point is GREEDO DIDN'T SHOOT FIRST DANGIT! Other then that....meh

  • If it's a classic, don't touch it. The original 3 are classics ... don't touch.

I'd have no problem if he would remove Jartard Binks (or at least take off that idiotic jive talk). And if he would re-cast Anakin Skywalker, both Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen, I would go watch all 3 again. Considering he was supposed to be some brilliant kid, both actors sure talked and acted like blithering idiots.

  • John Williams Composed and conducted the music for almost all of the Steven Spielberg movies, also for many Lucas movies, also for Lost in Space tv series, For the Christopher Reeve Superman movie, also for Home Alone, 1st 3 Harry Potter movies, Music for Olympic games, NBC sunday night football, NBC Nightly news. Has also been a conductor for the Boston Pops. He won 5 Academy Awards, 4 Golden Globes, and 21 grammies more information can be found on wikipedia and google.

  • Love that guys shirt: "John Williams is the man"

  • as a creator its his place to create a world, though being aware of his audience is important, it is equally as important for him to have the freedom to do what he does. His world has become one that many want to join. it would loose alot in unity and consistency if other writers (who choose to write about starwars) did not come into agreement with Lucas ideals.

  • Ex: 2 people write a book the same year, without knowing the other: 1says Yoda grew wings n flew home to his long lost home of Tondura, the other writer says Yoda comes from D'ahmu. There is no longer consistency in the story. George Lucas plays a vial role in making sure the story continues in a fluid way. no, fans are not always going to like how that goes.... but if i were to take a guess, the reasons maybe to further the story even more.

  • I say... when things get to be a certain size... someone has to make sure the world runs right.. and it IS lucas world. what right do fans, (who have been asked to join him in adventures) have to stage a hostile takeover.

  • I accept that Star Wars is Lucas' creation and he can do with it what he wants, but the fans have been incredibly loyal to Star Wars and to George Lucas. When Lucas decides to completely ignore the millions of fan's wishes and pleas on a subject then he's doing them a disservice and it's plain disloyal and rude.

  • you need both but mainly the truth hurts

  • His Film His Rules, Simple, the films are entertaining job done

  • No but slightly yes. A story teller should be able to write thier own story but at the same time it should interest the audience and have things in thier that the audience likes.

  • Corey looks so different but so much the same :P

  • the prequels can be ingnored if he would give me an untouched original on dvd I wouldn't give two shits anymore let him paint over the mona lisa all he wants

  • I saw the original Star Wars when I was six years old. It was for me. The idea that kids can't handle death in stories is a very new idea, and an incorrect one.

  • I effing love the guy's shirt. John Williams *IS* the MAN, God bless that musical genius

  • listen..lucas created star wars..its his...either watch it and like it..or watch it and dont like it and never watch it again..lucas is the god of sci fi..bow down to him and obey...

  • @davycrocketful Lucas is not the god of scifi many of his ideas were used before he came along. I don't have to obey any false gods silly.

  • @hydrolito but you must obey him..!

  • Well done, and George should be 'paying the price' far bigger than a boycott, he should be held accountable for his actions good and proper.

  • is there a video from George in response to this?

  • anyone see the dwight bobblehead in the back?

  • George Lucas wanted UNLIMITEED POWEERRRRR.. now he has turned to the Darkside! Who will turn him back tot he light side? Mike Stoklasa maybe?

  • Paying the price ??? for what ??? George Lucas has made billions of dollars from Star Wars he is paying no price , just because a few ( lots ) fans don't like the prequels is not his fault as he made the movies he wanted to do & if you don't like them then don't watch them , if you can't handle it then there is someting wrong with you...these are just movies they are not real , it is only one mans vision .

  • Nerds.

  • who is john williams and what is his stupid shirt

  • kinda interesting how people hate the prequels but if he would have done this story in order and made the prequels in the 70s and 80s with the special effects of that time and then 20 years later made episodes 4 5 and 6 like he made the prequels with giant special effects everyone would be complaining about 4 5 and 6.

  • @ranakin9000 your right on the spot matey...lets just enjoy star wars...

  • The storyteller has the right to tell whatever story is in him. Naturally George wanted to create something that his fans liked, but you can't please everyone. I personally love the prequels. I seem to remember in some interview George saying that the original saga was what he wanted to create first but that technology wasn't really up to the job at that stage. I can say I am one star wars fan that isn't mad at George, I love his work on the whole star wars saga.

  • the prequels werre bad but they couldve been ignored but fucking up the originals every decade is stupid

  • george lucas should be punished by having jar jar binks live in his the rest of his life

  • Does a storyteller have a duty to the people? As one myself, I would say yes. You need only look at the history of the storyteller, poet or bard. They were a part of their cultures. The original artists were shamans, and they were an extremely key part of it. A writer has a duty to the truth, to the moral impacts of his writing. Obviously this would also apply to filmmakers.

What one does in private is private. What one does in public, is public.

  • @Neurolanis but what about ones right to ones own story? What about not just writing to please your fans? Cause at the end of it, did he just try please his fans or did he stay true to what he felt he needed to make. I have no problem with the movies except that as Corey said, he had free reign.

  • @mbdude5296 I believe the issue, as poised, is a moral one and not a legal one. Legally, yes, he can do whatever he wants.

  • @Neurolanis yes, but MORALLY do you as a storyteller write to please yourself or your fans? Yes he can do whatever he wants legally , but storytellers do what they do because they love their story. And also beggars can't be choosers. Everyone wanted the new trilogy so he made it, and now everyone is angry at him because he "ruined" their childhood. And yes I am angry that he made changes to the original trilogy.

  • @mbdude5296 A writer is supposed to write from inspiration. It reflects one's own experiences and observations he's made around him. It comes from him and is then given to the world. It would be impossible for me to write for myself or for the world, because each are a part of it. I am an individual who is a part of the world, and my art (whether visual, written or performed) reflects that experience and those values.

I agree, he didn't ruin anyone's childhood. He just gives less inspiration.

  • @Neurolanis true, I agree with you for the most part, but I feel like you're talking about storytellers or bards in the context of them chronicling cultural history or important events. George isn't writing history here, he's telling a fictional story; he has no duty to recreate an actual event as accurately as possible. In that light, I do think he deserves some creative liberty, but again, just out of common sense, I think he does need to mind what the fans say, if just for commercial success.

  • @EinsteinEMP826 True, he has no duty to fulfill, only expectations. But I do feel that a writer has a duty to the truth. Many writers believe that. It's just a 'feeling' mind and not everyone might agree. Of course, truth is subjective.

I never meant that recording history has anything to do with writing, just referred to the historical background to writing. Myths have turned into entertainment.

When it comes to defacing his own work, and yes ignoring his fans, is where it gets sticky.

  • @Neurolanis He's a fiction writer not a journalists. He may bring up some ideas that have accured in the past and change it to a different setting, say use information from the fall of Rome to incoroporate into fall of the fictional empire, but it is not the truth of what actually happened when it's just a fictional story. We can't be 100% sure about history as they say history is written by the winners. Many governments destroyed books & newspapers to prevent other opinions and Knowledge.

  • @hydrolito I don't think you understand what I mean by "truth". I don't mean journalistic truth, I mean personal truth. It's difficult to explain this in a brief comment but if you research Joseph Campbell you may better understand where I'm coming from. The same myths have been told for thousands of years. There are some basic pyschological truths that come through the kind of mythical writing that Lucas has done, only that it no longer comes through. It's way too commercial.

  • @Neurolanis The original Star Wars was better before he change it Solo shooting the guy makes more sense than waiting until the guy shoots first and maybe blows off his head, so that part of the original was more beleivable maybe some other parts weren't but that definitely was is he going to go back and change Raiders and not have Indiana shoot the swordsman (dressed in black(Vader?)), well he did in the presequel and that part wasn't as good or believable as the original.

  • Remember Lucas did not direct empire strikes back and Return of the Jedi.

  • ANSWER: No. People are welcome to say what they want, but don't build up false expectations. Example: I went to see M Night's "Signs" expecting a cool mystery movie about crop circles. I got a stupid Christian parable about a priest regaining his faith.

Also, I think the question is unfair since it's dealing with content and the main complaint against the prequels is about quality. Lucas should've told a great story, not coasted on the SW name and special effects.

  • jar-jar's voice is annoying, true. But I think we are supposed to dislike him and be annoyed by him in a funny way. He steps in sh*t, gets farted on, screws his mouth up so he cant talk. R2 pushes him around, 3PO makes fun of him as does obi wan. It made for some comic relief, yeah he is out of place, and many characters made fun of him too. Maybe if he had a different voice people would see the humor more?

  • @klaasv Or maybe if he didn't exist at all? Yeah. I like my idea better.

  • Marcia Lucas is the real deal that's were the answer lies, Lucas has good ideas but needs professionals to make it come true ...editors.

  • that was amazing

  • i will never buy the blu-ray version

  • @pchenester Why

  • @pchenester

GOOD FOR YOU...stick with the VHS...I on the other hand shall enjoy the better HD quality and special effects.

God all this whining gets on my fucking nerves

  • the prequels lacked human connection.

Lucas went overboard with the special effects to show off what he can do with a computer.

I think the limits when making the original movies made it more interesting. Cause he had to focus on Luke and him being the main character. With all the technology around time he made Phantom Menace, he knew it didn't matter. Without a main character, without a real plot, without good acting people would be "mind blown" at all the cool loud dumb effects

  • When/where can I see this entire documentary??

  • From all the special features I've seen on the prequel triology, George Lucas is a lazy writer. I mean I saw a bit in the Episode 1 special features where they had started work on the film but he hadn't written the script! He fell back on his laurels with the prequels, and ruined the storyline by not allowing input from other people. I still love Star Wars, but it's like hugging a teady bear wrapped in razor wire.

  • @SueofthePhoenixGate i feel the same way i love star wars to death the original trilogy raised me way better than my parents ever could i do think the prequels were pretty bad but i didnt think they ruined star wars as much as the special editions did i will always love star wars i just wont respect lucas the movie rapist anymore

  • Dude is straight RAMBLING on this clip...

  • By making the garbage of the last three movie's, he betrayed his grass roots fans who supported star wars from the beginning. Jedi and Empire were hands down the best of the series (in my opinion/which he didn't direct), everything since has been a cash grab. His vision and artistic ability died a long time ago.

  • George can do what he wants. It's his. He made them. Screw you guys.

  • I like the prequel trilogy aswell, but George is absolutely terrible at writing good dialouge! He did put too many hats on and lets face it he is no Irvin Kershner! But, The Revenge of the Sith is an amazing finale and it's just a couple of notches below Empire!

  • I seem to be one of the few in the world who is happy with all of the movies, even the prequels. What I think people fail to grasp is that Ep. 1 seemed to be targeted for a younger audience, which pisses many 40+ year old fans, I understand. It was perfect for me. With ep. 2, I hated the story because it was too much politics but I've grown to like it now. I've never been frustrated with any SW work, except for Mandalorians are pacifists, but that's another story.

  • Episode I and II were irritating at times, yes. But Revenge of the Sith was damn good, and people cheered in theaters when I was watching it. So haters should just stop complaining and accept these movies, because, believe it or not, there are LOTS of people who actually like them.

BTW, a lot of these haters probably can't write crap themselves, so they should stop dissing George Lucas.

  • Whos are the fighting girls at the beginning? Which fan-movie is this from?

  • the saddest part of all this. is that all of us here could come up with a better series of prequels. lol, Seriously we have all thought up and imagined different scenes and different dialogue and even different actors. George lucas sucks Vulcan balls....there i said it.

  • have they released the damn doc on dvd yet?

  • I'm fine with prequels, fine with spin off material, fine with all that......but to not have the originals untouched now or in the future....I am upset about.

  • Comment removed

  • I think the new star wars movies are better than the original he is making movies of better quality for you losers just enjoy them ffs don't get your panties in a twist .. if he didn make the new movies now you would all be crying about no new star wars movies.. sometimes bitches just love to complain pisses me off. Rant over.

  • @251lpm

It's not a simple rant for the lot of us movie goers expecting to be entertained. Watching the prequels, it was common for the general audience to laugh during the serious scenes, cry during the cringe-inducing humor, and feel very annoyed during the romance scenes. If only Lucas made the films like "Dark Knight", or "Star Trek (2009)", then people wouldn't bitching about the prequels like Anakin bitching about his life.

  • Obviously, Lucas owns the rights to his creation and can do with it whatever he wants to. That includes driving it into the ground and slapping fans with a "Jar-Jar". However, fans have the right to say, "George, that sucks and doesn't even come close to the charm of the original films."

The storyteller can tell whatever story he or she wants. If he or she does it well enough, though, the story takes on a life of its own though fans which the storyteller has to acknowledge.

  • I thought I was the only one :`(

    Well, not really.

  • so true. The games and books give too much and George just cuts us off.

  • If George Lucas just decided to open a winery and only do movies that couldn't be sold to studios; then we would have never seen another movie worth watching again.

  • he made it, he can do whatever he damn well pleases.

  • The more people told Lucas "no," the better Star Wars was. Just saying.

  • He created it, its kind of his story to mold and create.

As a huge fan of starwars, I might have done it differently but Im still a HUGE FAN and i will always love starwars and have loved it since I was like 6

  • And the Fan Freakism continues....>.>

  • I like the original III. I've grown up under those films. But those are just movies. Grow up!!!

  • Okay, I've always had a theory. Shoot it down if you want I don't care. What people fell in love with in 1977 when they watched Star Wars was Star Wars itself. Sure they liked the characters and the story and the lightsabers but what they were ultimately sucked into was the atmosphere and creativity of the story. Now people bitch and complain all the time about the prequel trilogy but it too is apart of the Star Wars universe. And my theory is that if the prequel trilogy had been the one to

  • @AbsoluteHart7296 come out 30 years ago and the original trilogy was made in 1999 then people would have the SAME kind of arguments to complain about. They would hate Mark Hamill as Luke and call Luke whiny, they would hate Chewy and call him a muted Jar Jar Binks, etc. etc. George Lucas is a storyteller and he had this story planned out from the beginning. Ultimately, it's HIS story to tell and he CAN tell it anyway he wants to. You will never please every fan and sometimes not even the

  • Let it BE~! It is what it is>, I do understand the fustration of the prequels. Let's move on!.

  • 0:40 FINNEY!!!!

Thumbs up if you know who he is!

  • These reviews of the prequels are the best EVER. Google "red letter media reviews" You will not regret watching these, they are long, but they truly expose the mess that was the star wars prequel trilogy. The entire prequel project was lazy and not thought out, didn't make any sense, and it shows. Even "on set" footage of Lucas during the prequel filming, shows him usually sitting and slouching in his chair, drinking his coffee, watching two actors and a green screen.

  • I don't agree with this guy. Bottom line is that the prequals just weren't that great. That's what has people disappointed, pure and simple.

  • @DejectedPanda It's funny that you and two other people seem to have missed the fact that he is *simply* trying to explain *why* he thinks that is.

  • @futurestoryteller It sounded to me like the old "you can't please the fans" argument for the most part. Lucas can't please everyone because everyone has their own idea what the prequals should have been argument. That's where I disagree. \The prequals were generally mediocre, pure and simple - just a fail on Lucas's part as a storyteller. If he'd made something as good as Empire or Jedi, fans would have been pleased, no matter what they were expecting.

  • @DejectedPanda Granted it does sound a bit like that toward the end, but I didn't think that's what he was getting at as a whole.

  • It is George's story / universe so he should be able to tell the stories he wants to. He took the chance hundreds of film makers never do and for that I think we should all be glad because God knows what would have happened to star wars if it had been left in the hands of 20th century fox, at least we have been given a series of completely original movies.

  • It is George's story / universe so he should be able to tell the stories he wants to.

  • Lucas should have made it for the fans, they gave him his career

  • I'm still scratching my head as to why Lucas thought a "prequel" was better than a "sequel" to the original series. He should have known that he had to tread very carefully, when messing around with the timeline of these characters. I would find a sequel series much more satisfying, because we can actually be surprised. The prequels lacked any tension, because we all KNEW what happened to the characters.

  • @815oceanic815 Lucas had plans for the "prequel" that during that current day tech was not available, so he did the 4-6 with the tech he had then

  • @Sniperjoe221 Yes, I knew that; however, I just cannot believe all the continuity errors in the prequels that don't really mesh with the original trilogy. For instance, Princess Leia remembering her mother as "sad." Really? Explain that George.

  • @815oceanic815, exactly, well said. Knowing the end outcome of every little detail makes a movie a whole helluva lot less entertaining.

    cheers :)

  • @815oceanic815 Well George wanted to finish the saga by telling the story he could tell before. He just told it badly. He should have made the Emperor the main character than Anikan.

  • @815oceanic815 he made the prequel series so that if he wanted later on there would still be an option of another sequel series.

  • @815oceanic815 I think there is a lot of value in knowing how things got to a certain point. Look at Romeo and Juliet. The play starts with a narrator telling you how it ends. A good story is not dependent on the twists and turns that it ends with but on the journey itself. A movie like The 6th Sense isn't a great movie because of its shocking revelation. It is a great movie because of its characters, performances, emotions, and overall direction.

  • @Schnyger I can give you that. Godfather II is considered one of the best movies of all-time and that was pretty much a prequel; but that is an example of doing a prequel the right way. It was interesting discovering how Don Coreleone made his way to the top ranks, whereas, Lucas made Anakin's rise to the dark side somewhat diluted and contrived. He just didn't make us care about the characters..Moreover, the writing, dialogue, and chemistry between the characters was just plain awful.

  • @815oceanic815 screw you thos star wars was better then the original.

  • The argument is not George Lucas is allowed to tell the story he wants vs what the fans want to hear. The point is IF he tells the story, does everything involved in the film process and the end product is garbage, then you are free to criticizes him to no end. There were many problems with the prequels from plot, dialogue, editing, cinematography, character dev, etc that you can criticize George for his choices. Makes you wonder how much he was actually involved with making the originals.

  • @Juggern4ut20 I don't think there's any mystery here. George was COMPLETELY in control of the prequels, thus, that is why it sucked so bad. Just think about it, he handed over the reigns to Kirshner when he directed The Empire Strikes Back and is there any coincidence that movie is regarded as the BEST movie of the six? If you watch a lot of the extra features on the DVD's, you'll notice how much George dwells and depends on CGI, to the point that his actors have no point of reference.

  • i think that a storyteller should tell the story he wants to tell the way he wants to tell it. if the people don't like it they can tell their own story.my point is that if a story always went the way we want it to go there would be no exitement,no surprises.a storyteller tells the story thats in his head and the listener gets to decide if he likes it or not.

  • I found people who hates star wars lack of faith disturbing

  • it's not please the fans VS tell the Story. Making a movie is a process of narrowing down infinite posibile choices to a single chosen story. He chose who he made the movie with, he chose to let others do EU willingly. Why does he pull back? he not only ereased aspects of the original trilogy, he spoiled their twists with the prequels, they dont function as prequels, they're sequels that take place earlier. There's many elements missing in them that remove the reality the originals had.

  • it's not please the fans VS tell the Story. Making a movie is a process of narrowing down infinite possibile choices to a single chosen story. He chose who he made the movie with, he chose to let others do EU willingly. Why does he pull back?

  • it's not please the fans VS tell the Story. Making a movie is an act of communication, and in the process of realizing the movie you make choices to narrow infinite possibilities to one reality of the movie. Once you made your choices you dont pull back it's irresponsible. He chose who he made the movie with, he chose to let others do EU willingly. He cant see how limitations improve the creativity in a piece of art, that's what make his new work stale and irrelevant in the long run.

  • I am 36, I grew up on thew original trilogy I remember seeing ep 5 and 6 in the theaters in the early 80s, I had the VHS, the toys etc etc. That said, I actually like Ep 3 revenge of the Sith more than 4-6. But overal i kinda think of them as 'one' film anyway. I even like Ep1. While it is the weakest Star Wars film, its still better then most of the other action/sci-fi crap Ive seen.

But to answer the question, even if i didn't like the prequel trilogy, I still think George can do what he wants

  • I honestly don't get the hate for the new SW. It depicts how the old republic was and the Jedi Council before it fell, how they came across the prophesied hero, how the Empire came to power, Obi Wan's story trying to take Anakin as his padawan and failing and the Clone Wars. Anakin's weakness through emotion, his ego driving him against Obi Wan and how Darth Vader came to be. Most of this was referred to in the old SW. Are people following a different tale??? Exactly what story did they expect?

  • the whole tale was his, and he knew the backstory to the old star wars before he even made it... he isn't accountable because it's his, he can film pink star troopers with g-string hats for all he cares! Most of us would hate that but its his creation, his right, and he wanted to tell the story like he wanted. I wouldn't care less about fans if I wanted to make a film and trying to tell a story, because the point is telling the story the way I want to tell it. I loved all 6 films... great work.

  • this is like when you see a really terrible painting and you go "that isn't art! its rubbish" and people say "well it engages conversation, it makes you feel emotion. everyone has a different reaction to it." i think thats a cop out though, and that george lucas is a sh*thead.

  • @maikeru01 actually it isnt, for example I can give specific details to why the new films are great. And it won't be like looking at a painting telling you "that green over there symbolises the emotion of blaaaa blaaaa blaaa..."... It would actually fit into things that you actually see! George Lucas is not a sh!thead and Im not a fanboy. He told a tale the way he wanted, it's his right. Some will like it, some wont, and that's totally ok. We are all entitled to our opinions.

  • @HazaRDReBorn You are only making my point for me by saying so.

  • @maikeru01 I hope you mean the part where I said "we are all entitled to our own opinions..." That I believe, that's why I would never turn around and tell someone that their theories for liking or disliking something are based on nothing and that they are trying to make stuff up (like for a painting) to excuse absolutely nothing. Sometimes people don't know why they like something, sometimes they aren't so great with words. Making that the reason to dislike something is something I dont respect

  • @maikeru01 if on the other hand someone came to me and said I hate SW for this and this reason, or because I simply hate it or it doesnt express me, I would respect that...

your initial comment imho is kind of arbritrary, because it's a point of view stating something as rubbish and assuming that those that reply with vauge meanings are copping out behind crap. Thats what you made it sound like, and thats why I stated that I could give proper clear reasons to liking it and why it isnt rubbish ;)
