There aren't that many buttons on the Genesis Controller. Jumping doesn't do anything and you can't go left and right. Which buttons are left? Right: Up and Down! And surprise surprise, they work just fine. I don't get why so many people get stuck there for longer than half a minute, seriously.

Think that's sad? I read about using Up & Down on barrels in an issue of GamePro way back when Sonic 3 was released. However, I tried it on the VERY FIRST barrel in Act 1, which is the ONLY "buoyant" barrel you can't use Up & Down on in the entire Zone. ><

hahha OMG I had the same problem. There was absolutely NO indication that you just had to press up and down to get the damn thing going! I literally just tried jumping up and down trying to work physics to go underneath to no avail.

I didn't find out until years later and finally completed this game on my own. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only one that couldn't figure this out.

theres 2 ways around this... the red squares u see are guide lines. when sonics rythm on the barrel reaches the top square you can either... jump off when you get to the bottom orrrr jump off at peak height and wait for barrel to shoot up allowing you to jump down thats the correct way because theres a line of red squares and to the left is 2 squares its a dead give away
