You know i have watched this movie a few times,and i must admit it is my favorite head fuck movies. I do believe Lenny and sammy are two different people,and that Lenney was manipulated thru Teddy for his own agenda. I also think that his wife was not killed ,but he just thought so. Close to the end of the movie you will see a scene where he returns home and his wife is rubbing the tattoo on his right side of his chest...the place he said he would put a tat if he ever killed his wife's killer..

The DVD special features make this very, very clear. We are meant to consider the possibility that he is Sammy because it adds another possible twist to the movie, but of course that isn't what happened. It being brought up as a possibility does not mean that he IS. It is there to make us think and consider, how do we know he is not.

I watched this movie for the first time the other day. Christopher Nolan makes the best suspense movies. For example, The Prestige was a movie that kept you guessing right up until the end. That and this movie.

We know, we see Lenny as Sammy, but we don't know if that is fact or fiction. We can't tell if Teddy is lying to him and he is just thinking about it, or if it really is true.

ok i havent seen the movie in a while but i remember lenny saying something about trusting your own hand writing. Many examples of him writing on the back of the pictures he takes. i love this movie :) probably watch it tonight... il post the frame time of the movie where you can pause and see lenny as sammy jankis. Im telling you his wife survived the robbery and the story of sammy is his own story after the accident.

Whoa now. He doesn't do all the tatoos himself, remember?  He went to the tatoo parlor at the end (beginning) of the movie, to get a tatoo done that he wasn't going to do. One can draw conclusions that most all of the tatoos are done by different people.

Not quite true. Although it does show him injecting his wife with the medicine, his memory just may be distorted, as he mentions earlier about memory not being perfect. I don't know if there's a true answer to the ending...

watch closely when he's talking about sammy recognizing learning to look at the doctors like he recognizes them.. it show's a flash of leonard's face real quicck. to me, thats proof that it really is meant to be him. and he has tattoos when it shows him laying with his wife.

Because Sammy Jankis had the same condition. and lenny could remember him because it was before "the accident" He also could remember why Sammy couldn't handle it. Ex. To many notes all mixed up with no system for to follow. Basically remembering Sammy would help Lenny understand his own condition.

He knows he has the condition through association of his "remember sammy jankis" tattoo - the fact he investigated Sammy and learnt about this condition means he understands the condition, and the tattoo is very visible and will serve as a reminder. He has also "conditioned" himself to say "I have this condition", which you hear him say many times during the movie. The two things combined give him an "awareness" of his problem.

Wow, that would make an amazing trailer, it was put together quite nicely and the... what would they be called? 'Statements' between clips and the clips that followed to explain them could not have gone together any better than they did.
