pixar films worthless??? thats crazy! they are some of the few good family films being made these days! other than that remark haha this is great, good job on the documentary! return to oz was an important film in my childhood
@virusinsideus Thank you for the kind words about my documentary! Yeah, I agree that Sean's comments about the Pixar films is pretty silly, but give him a break. He was only a young kid when I filmed this interview.
@HConstantine I'm sorry you didn't like my documentary, even though you watched the whole thing and commented several times. It is acclaimed by the RTO fanbase and you can read other comments here on YouTube of people saying nice things about it. It's also one of my most viewed works; each clip has several thousand hits.
This film for me was so much better than WOZ. I was a 90s kid & just wasnt into musicals or 'old movies' plus Judy Garland to me looked like a 'grown up' I thought RTO was much more dark and edgy, the witch and the wheelers were awesome! Loved Fairuza Balks Dorothy! More haunted and brave over wholesome and helpless! And the mental hospital-how scary was that! My son now loves it too. (I always wanted to find a lunchpail tree) Thanks 4 the doc!
@Diazefan Thank you for the kind words and glad you liked the doc. Also am glad to meet fellow fans of RTO. Hope your son continues to love the movie!
Terrific documentary, I wish the dvd had something like this on it. Great job, I'm sure it must have been difficult to make. I personally love the film and hav so ever since i was a kid and would rent it from my local video store and yes i'll admit it's not AS good as the Wizard of Oz but it's a great film in its own right, it may never be as well known as the other in history but hopefully its huge cult fanbase will keep it alive and more will discover it cause it really should b better known.
Hello! things were happy in Oz at the end. Idk what everyone was so upset about. Again...ppl expected songs n dance & didn't appreciate the film as its own movie & its own version of what happens to Dorothy after she returns home. Oz was always scary but beautiful. Judy Garland even says so in the end of WOZ. Great movie in my opinion. Wonderful music.
"nowadays they're with pixar, making movies about cars and stuff like that, just really worthless stuff." even in 2007 that comment was hilariously ignorant - toy story 1 & 2, finding nemo and the incredibles - to name a few - worthless stuff??
@NotOrdinaryInGames So glad you liked it! Yes, the sound was shit, because I still didn't know what I was doing when I made this. But I'm glad it's found life on the Internet.
Return to Oz has been my favorite movie since I was 1. Great documentary, except for the parts with the siren and vacuum cleaner noises in the background. Still, some interesting info. :-D
I'd have to say... all of this for a film which is ultimately just okay. I think they should remake it... some elements work really well, like the dark elements (Note that Coraline ran into similar problems recently when parents deemed it too scary) but then other parts seemed really cliched and the ending is significantly rushed. I think it would work better with a remake; Walt Disney himself knew kids had to be scared (think about the transformation scene in snow white- that's f***ing scary!)
I like this making of documentary. It's different than most of the making of documentaries I seen on DVD's including the 4 on The Wizard Of Oz DVD. This one feels more home made like an independent film.
Now that I think about it this film reminds me of A Neverending Story. This is the sort of fantasy world usually only seen in books. I really could die in this version of OZ. The MGM film was a happy optimistic film that lifts peoples spirits and that's why people love it. I love this one for it's depth.
be happy, everyone...who had the experience to grow up with this film in their hearts and discover it as a relic in later life. the best films to an individual are easily the ones that never got the popular vote
thanks for this. return to oz has always and will always be my favourite film of all time. i was born the year it came out - and have loved it since before i can remember. thanks again!
@tracy80sgirl Totally. The reboot/distant sequel trend thing happening these days. It would have been much more acceptable in 2005. "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" came out that year and made bank.
I saw Return to Oz on the Disney Channel back in 1995 when I was 10 or 11 years old. I thought it was a pretty cool movie. I loved the fact that it was shot on real locations and the effects were so much better than in the first Oz film which I love. Also, Fairuza Balk is such a great actress who has done a lot of great films over the years.
never ending story was terrific also. labyrinth is a favorite of mine too. so is willow! and making contact is a great one also. go see fright night too!
Fans of Return to Oz definitely need to check her out in the campy but wildly fun Halloween TV Movie "The Worst Witch". The old version with Tim Curry! I think the just made it shortly after making Return to Oz. I also recommend the Henson film, "The Witches".
Fans of Return to Oz need to also check out "The Dark Crystal", "Labyrinth", "The Neverending Story", "Willow", "Harry Potter", "Spiderwick Chronicles", "Pinocchio and the Emperor of the Night" and "Making Contact (a.k.a. Joey)" which i have uploaded on youtube.
Hey, I've seen most of those. I enjoy that genre of '80's camp fantasy. However, I continue to think Return To Oz is the best of the entire genre, with Labyrinth coming in second.
Have you seen "Making Contact (a.k.a. Joey)"? it's this really dark and eerie yet fascinating and underrated German horror fantasy which i have uploaded here on youtube, just click under my account to first watch the U.S. English dubbed version then the Uncut extended German language with version subtitles.

By whom is this documented acclaimed? Its amateurishness is embarrassing even compared to normal Youtube standards.

@mrfreeze9000 coraline the book is dark....while the oz books have dark parts, they are overall light fantasy adventure
